This is why I hate the Black Canary arc so much.
I’m not a comic reader, and I firmly believe that the comics and show should be fundamentally divergent, but I know that Black Canary is meant to be a hero(ine) in her own right. Casting her as Oliver’s sidekick will rankle with comic fans, casting her as co-lead will rankle with…well, everybody else, and nobody behind the scenes seems to know how to strike a balance between the two factions.
A Black Canary firmly established in Starling City does not belong on Arrow. The show trying to honor Laurel’s comic destiny has taken a toll on all of the characters that developed within the narrative prior to Season 3, and both Diggle and Felicity were lost in the shuffle to make her feel as though she belonged.
I’ve said before that the writers spent the first two years throwing plots at Laurel like spaghetti at a wall to see what would stick; now, it seems that they’re throwing characters at Laurel like seasoning to see if there’s anything that could possibly make her arc palatable.
