am i banned from the fandom

This photo is going around on the internet right now, like some cheap meme with the caption “Here’s a photo for all those upset about the Muslim ban.“ I was compelled to write a response. I know this is a tumblr for Pokemon GO and I’ve tried my best for these months to keep posting fun things about this fandom but I cannot stay silent. I am sorry for the deviation from the norm you have all come to expect from me, but this I cannot abide. This is my message:

My father worked at the World Trade Centers from 1998-2001. He survived that day because he took me to school that morning when I was in my third or fourth day of 6th grade. This isn’t about my father, though, because he can tell his story in his own way when he feels it is appropriate. I will explain my own story.

I had been pulled out of class that morning. They didn’t tell me what had happened, just assuring my 11 year old self that my father was okay and that there was a fire at the World Trade Centers. I know they were lying. They couldn’t put me in touch with my father. I knew something was wrong. I knew about the 1993 bombings. I often wondered what would happen in the towers fell on the city, looking down on it from above, if such an attack were to happen again.

Sitting in the principals office I was filled with anger, sadness, disgust, loneliness, despair, anxiety, depression and chaos. My father might have been dead, killed by terrorist from a land I knew nothing about. I sat in that office for 45 minutes thinking nothing but that.

Then my mom came to get me. She told me my father was okay. Then I saw him. He was crying. We hugged. I told him that as long as he was okay I was okay. That made everything okay.

I had every right to be upset and vindictive against the muslim community because of the acts of an element of radical extremists attempting to murder my father. In fact some of my peers actually encouraged me to fill my hear with hate and anger, to put aside my childish wonder of the world and build walls in my heart to separate me from the muslim faith as a whole. The propaganda on television and the fact we were entering into two wars as retribution for September Eleventh didn’t help.

But I couldn’t do it. Something inside of me wanted to answer the burning question of “why?”. So I did some research in the middle school computer lab and very quickly found my answer. There is a large contingent of radical terrorists, of every nation and faith, that are drawn to the cause because they have no other options. I read that a suicide bomber in Iraq was paid $20,000 to carry out his attack. This money was needed for his family to pay for shelter, electricity, food, water, security and heat. The basic essentials that allow us to be human and not think with hate and sadness but rather with compassion and understanding. The people in Afghanistan, in the mountainous regions, join extremist groups because they have no resources to sustain their life.

That was when I learned about the concept of ‘sustainability’. The Brundtland Report in 1987 defined sustainability loosely as any action that leaves the world in a better or same state as the way you came into it. I decided at that point, as a 12 year old, to not fight the extremists with a gun, but rather to help get the muslim community the essentials they need so they never have to feel like terrorism is the only way to support themselves, their family or have their message heard.

Islamic extremists tried to kill my family. I do not hate the muslim community. I am a vocal opponent of the muslim ban, registry or oppression. All people no matter what race, creed, nationality, faith, background, color, gender, sex, identification, whatever deserve to be treated as human beings. Because thats what we all are when you get down to it. We are humans, of many glorious and wonderful backgrounds and interests, that should work together rather than divide ourselves. We are one species no matter what you look like or sound like. The blood that runs through my veins runs through the veins of the man in Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Somalia, France, Russia, China, North Korea, everywhere.

We are a nation that has a proud history of accepting people of all backgrounds. I am German. If this ideology had been pervasive in the 1930-40s then wouldn’t I have been held accountable for the actions of the Nazi’s in the same way that people of the muslim faith are persecuted for the actions of the extremists? I have muslim friends. If I can not hate them, can you try to exercise a little empathy for the innocent people caught up in this?

I will leave you with a couple of quotes for thought:

“In these days of difficulty, we Americans everywhere must and shall choose the path of social justice…the path of faith, the path of hope, and the path of love toward our fellow man.” - Franklin Roosevelt

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” - Statue of Liberty

Love always. Reject hate. Be compassionate. Be empathetic. Love thy neighbor. Protect the innocent. Fight for the oppressed. Crush evil. Be vigilant. Be strong. Be good.

I love you all. Remember that, always.

Hi,Miss 7goodangel.I have a question for you...... Is PJ unable to ship now? There are a lot of people here who say you've banned PJ from ship. I don't know if it's true. Can you please tell me the answer? [[[Sorry, my English is poor;w;

OH GOSH - NO no no!!!
NOPE - NADA - NUH UH - HECK NAH.

PJ is NOT BANNED from ANY SHIP you wish to do.

I have never ever banned PJ from being in a fan ship! NEVER!

I still am fine with people shipping PJ in any ship they wish!

I’ve seen PJ and OC (like another person’s OC), PJ and Fresh, PJ and Goth, PJ and Palette, PJ and [a real person]…

This is my approach to the whole shipping thing…

Think of another fandom you like - for me I’ll go with the general Disney one.

Think of a canon ship that is within that movie/cartoon/story/comic. For a general Disney one - how about Mickey and Minnie! That one has been pretty hammered in that those two like each other. Heck I can even do Oswald and Ortensia since or that one based off of the Epic Mickey games, they actually are married and have kids.

But within the fandom - you will find a TON of pictures of Mickey and Oswald as a pairing. Now I believe most of these shippers know that their ship will never be canon - yet they still love it and do stuff for it. It’s another way of exploring characters - seeing how they play off of one another - and when in a romantic pairing, to see how they go through the hurdles of being in a relationship.
(or that they just really want Oz and Mick to kiss and- stuff.)

But my point is that if people can respect what is canon for something a huge company makes - and even for what a smaller independent creator does (like Undertale and Undyne+Alphys ship.) why can’t individual online creators that do stuff for fun not get the same treatment?

THAT is what I hope we can get to the point to. Just having respect that a fanship will not be canon but still go off and have fun with your headcanons of a fictional pairing!

It’s like.. PJ and Omni is the Mickey and Minnie in this scenario - and FreshPaper is the Mickey and Oswald. Just knowing that OmniPJ is the canon ship but still exploring ideas for other pairings and ships with other characters.

So TL;DR:

I will NEVER EVER ban someone shipping PJ with someone else. NEVER.

And honestly - I hope I can get back and start showing appreciation to ship drawings from any ship - canon or fanon - with PJ without this kind of confusion. Cause I seriously appreciate every single one of you - who ask questions to me, who follow me, like my art and drabbles, and even drawing my characters! Even if I prefer what I thought of for my character I still love seeing other’s interpretations, headcanons, and drawings!
But unfortuantly I am at a point where if I even show a little bit of liking a picture of PJ in a ship - people will think it’s the new canon and such.

However - gosh - I will never ever want to get to a point where I ban a ship entirely. I do NOT want to ever go down that path and trust me, I will do any other option before resulting to that ultimatum.

So GO AND SHIP MY FRIENDS - Just please remember to respect the canon ship.

That is all I ask. Give OmniPJ the same respect as other canon ships in other fandoms - but also go forth and have fun with your headcanons and ships!

Not saying you have to ship it - just go:

Someone else: “Well OmniPJ is the canon, but I like PJ with Fresh more. Well I will not go up and try to tell everyone that FreshPaper is the new ship and shove it above OmniPJ - but I will still do my story and tell people to go and learn more about canon PJ in the process! FreshPaper is a fan ship and while I know it won’t be canon - I will still have fun drawing / writing / discussing it!”

i feel like if sally /did/ walk in on percy and annabeth making out on the couch she wouldn’t be like “oh my god! you guys are so young! not now! i’m banning annabeth from this house!” she’d probably be like “damn percy, i though you’d at /least/ did it in a romantic place, not on a couch we bought from a thrift store.”

“The FO are meant to parallel Nazis. If you like Kylo Ren/Hux/etc you are ok with fascism, etc. etc. blah blah blah”

Fun fact: the original Star Wars was written as a response to the Vietnam War. So I think the Empire was not so much representative of ONE regime… but of Western colonial aggression against those who oppose its dogma.

Vietnam was a war where the largest military in the world attacked a smaller country that seemingly had no chance, with a superpower country who used brutal methods and killed civilians almost indiscriminately - and drafted its own citizens in droves to throw them into the fire (sound like Stormtroopers to you, too?)

So, who are the Empire then? Nazis? Sure, that’s ONE comparison. But most metaphors are not so simple, and I believe this one isn’t either.

Maybe look at that parallel, see it for what it is and ask yourself: are the Empire and FO *only* reminiscent of Nazis? Or is there more to it? Do you think it’s possible you should reflect on your own SUPERPOWER country’s effects on the world? Think for a minute - does your OWN country’s dogma violently shove its ideals and morality into other parts of the world? If the answer is yes…. perhaps you and people like Kylo Ren are not as different as you may think.

You keep calling Kylo Ren a fascist for supporting the FO. But if the Empire is perhaps an allegory of Western colonial interest, then what is the FO? It’s an echo of that colonial, hungry nature of superpowers.

This is not your basic allegory, SW fans. I keep saying antis reduce things, and it’s true.

I had an anti tell me that because I DAINED to criticize America I should stop watching Star Wars. I kid you not, she said to me, “If you hate America so much, why are you watching Star Wars?”

As if being critical of the biggest superpower means I am banned from enjoying its art and stories.

Do y'all OWN a fandom? Do y'all OWN Daisy Ridley and John Boyega? Pretty sure they’re not American.

It’s interesting we have these themes of colonialism, and some of the most accusatory people happen to be from the biggest, baddest superpower country of them all.

No, it doesn’t make you a bad person to be American - most of my family lives in America.

But maybe reflect a bit on how y'all going around calling Reylos and Kylo Ren fans Nazis… when in all actuality the Empire and the FO? Well… they might be repping YOU…

With this in mind, can it not become a bit clearer to you that there is moral ambiguity to be read into this story? How easy it is to fall into this trap of “right” vs “wrong,” and see your own views as RIGHT? Isn’t that the point of all this? To see how we explore these themes deeper, intimately, and not flatly and simplistically? Just a thought.
