The Other Hundred Educator Preview of Submission: The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit in #southafrica
The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit is the brainchild of Balule head warden and founder Craig Spencer. To ensure that rhinos aren’t hunted to extinction, he decided to use women as scouts instead of men with guns, in the hope of gaining the upper hand in the war between conservationists and poachers. Not only are the Black Mambas an effective local anti-poaching force, but they also try to teach the local communities that surround the park, communities in which they themselves live, about the value of their natural heritage.

I am on time!

On tumblr but not at all in history class. Seriously, it’s so much to remember. I’m so overwhelmed with it that I’m in my third week at school and I’ve only read and studied about 5 pages :’]

Today I also got lost in my community college’s parking lot because there was so much snow. After a few minutes, (during which, I went from “hey, look at this pretty snow everywhere” to “I AM HYPOTHERMIA.”) I realized I was in the parking lot behind the school instead of the parking lot in front. I couldn’t see much in front of me because it was so windy, the snow on me was melting, I had on converse and a pleather, falling apart jacket with no hood, and I didn’t know the school very well. After blindly fumbling around I began to think that I might actually be in trouble and also thought about how embarrassing it would be if I did get hurt. Can you imagine explaining that you collapsed from exhaustion because you were lost in a parking lot? A *small* parking lot? But yeah eventually through just walking and trying to make out the outline of the building, I made it back to the school and then through the other parking lot (after much struggle with the environment and trying to unlock the door with the key) to the warm safety of my car and promptly took a series of selfies so I could post about it on Facebook later. Idk tho, I don’t know if it would be funny on Facebook. Also, my laptop crashed.

So yeah… I’m not going to be returning to tumblr this month. See you March 1!

Organization of the Month: San Carlos Lions Club

This year, I have decided to donate my City Council salary to a different community charity each month. My hope is that by highlighting a local organization, I can bring attention to the good work they are doing and encourage others to get involved.

In January I donated my salary to the San Carlos Lions Club. The 50 member organization was founded in 1938 and focuses on collecting eyeglasses and distributing them to people in third world countries. Along with two other San Carlos service clubs, they fund Caring Cupboard, a non-profit organization that provides food to low income seniors in San Carlos

The club also plants trees in city parks, donates to many local organizations, hosts a community Easter Egg hunt, provides college scholarships to graduating high school students, and cleans the freeway at the entrance to San Carlos. I’m grateful to the Lions Club for their service to San Carlos. If you’d like to get involved with the Lions Club, please visit their website to learn more.

AA Spirit of Hospitality Award finalists - for Holiday Parks

Seven holiday parks have been named finalists in this year’s AA Spirit of Hospitality Award. All seven holiday parks are from the North Island in what is a complete turnaround from 2012 when five of the six finalists were from the South Island.

“The award is the supreme award for the holiday park sector. To be named as a finalist is important recognition of a holiday park’s commitment to providing quality service,” says Fergus Brown, Chief Executive of the Holiday Parks Association.

“We believe that customer service is the most important part of the holiday park experience. The variety of parks which make up the seven finalists proves that both big and small parks can compete when it comes to customer service,” says Mr Brown.“

TIA Chief Executive Martin Snedden congratulated the seven finalists.

"Camping is a great Kiwi tradition, and holiday parks are an integral part of that experience. Holiday park visitors also generate plenty of jobs and economic wealth for communities up and down the country. They are also valued TIA members.”

The seven finalists are:

All Seasons Holiday Park, Rotorua

Bowentown Beach Holiday Park, Waihi Beach

Cosy Corner Holiday Park, Mount Maunganui

Himatangi Beach Holiday Park

Martinborough TOP 10 Holiday Park

Miranda Holiday Park

Opunake Beach Kiwi Holiday Park

The winner will be announced at the Holiday Parks Conference & Trade Exhibition on the 4th of July.

Bowlmor Lanes Is Officially Gone, Making Way for Condos

External image

Greenwich Village icon Bowlmor Lanes closed its doors more than a year and a half ago, and the hulking warehouse it once occupied is now gone, too. EV Grieve reports that the demolition of the businesses on the west side of University Place, including Bowlmor’s former HQ, is completed, clearing a path for Billy Macklowe’s luxury condos.

To recap, Macklowe (the son of megadeveloper Harry) acquired the building in 2012, and revealed his plans to turn it into a 23-story condo building soon thereafter. Though many details on the conversion haven’t been revealed, we do know that it’ll be a 480-foot tower with 56 units that will be measure than 2,000 square feet apiece. It’ll also have bike parking, a ground-floor community facility, a resident lounge and terrace, a parking garage, and ground floor retail.

Bowlmor had occupied the space for more than 70 years before closing its doors in 2014.
