I’d imagine his housemates are simultaneously enamored and scared shitless of him because honestly, they’d know more than anybody of who Jimin can be - and who he is - underneath his big smiles and small stature. He’s super spoiled because well, he’s Park Jimin and it probably wouldn’t take much on his part to get whatever he wants (and he always get what he wants, just the way he likes it). And they’d also be the first ones to take a safe step back whenever there’s any sort of confrontation with the other houses and Jimin volunteers to “take care of it.”

But also… Imagine JJK watching all of this happening from the outside, seeing all these kids (some of whom are at least a head or two taller than Jimin) groveling and catering to all of his wishes… And he’s just,

Fanfic Tips:

Character Motivation

This is my biggest thing. You should always, at any given moment, know what every character in a scene wants. What they want is going to dictate how they act and react to things. Without characters wanting things, nobody ever does anything, and your fic doesn’t exist. 

When characters have different motivations and have to come together, magic happens. And as characters develop, their motivations change. 

Great example?

what Luke wants (general motivation: freedom -> The Right Thing): to get off his uncle’s farm and get to go be with his friends at the academy -> to be a Jedi and fight for the rebellion -> to learn more but also keep his friends safe -> to redeem his father.

what Leia wants (general motivation: fight Empire): to get the Death Star plans to the rebel base and find Obi-Wan Kenobi -> to not be in the Empire’s clutches -> to blow up the Death star -> to not be in the Empire’s clutches -> to save Han -> to blow up the other Death Star 

what Han wants (general motivation: self-preservation -> protect friends): to get his hands on some money so that he doesn’t get killed by a mob boss -> to escape the empire -> to help the rebellion/keep his friends safe

(Obi-Wan, meanwhile, pretty much just wants to keep Luke safe, and help the rebellion if he can.)

All different, all interweaving, most of them changing as the characters are influenced by others, and learn and grow. 

So yeah. You gotta know this shit about your characters - it’s crucial. 

Tip? If you’re unsure about whether you know what they want, try making a list of all the important characters in your fic (and then potentially do this with most scenes, briefly) and work out what their main motivation/what they want is. Just…in general. In life. And then, once you’re in a scene, see how this plays into what they want in this exact moment, and how they’re going to go about trying to get it. 

Know Your Source Material

You don’t have to be an expert in your fandom to write fanfic, but the more you know, the easier it is to move through the world and build a story, because you know where you’re going and how things work. Wikis are your friend, especially when working in big universes like DW or SW. (Like, hell, I might know a lot about DW, and feel very comfortable in that universe, but I still find myself on the TARDIS Index File all the time, checking little random things. It’s a damn godsend, and every fandom has a wiki.)

Your Characters Are Just People

Make sure you let your characters fuck up once in a while. They’re fallible beings, they’re going to make rash decisions that backfire, they’re going to try something and fail, they’re going to say the wrong thing and piss somebody off. They’re going to maybe mean well but fuck up majorly, and that’s okay, that’s good. Let them apologise, let them learn from the consequences, let the healing of a wound in a relationship bring the people closer together. 

And yes, this still goes for characters that almost never do anything wrong, or are all ‘holier than thou’. They are still gonna go about some things the wrong way. 

Planning Is Good, But Be Flexible 

In my experience, while some people lean heavily towards one or the other, appropriate use of planning or gardening can depend heavily on what kind of story you’re writing. 

When writing more action based storylines, I’ve found it’s very easy to get stuck in the middle of them - you get the characters into a mess and get stuck for a month not knowing how to get them out. This is where planning tends to be handy. A good way of not getting stuck is to plan it all out in little increments, so there’s not too much room to get stuck. Also, plotting from the back. Start at the end. Works really well a lot of the time. 

If planning works for you, plan as much as you want. But, always, always, be ready to change something, if you try a bit of gardening and end up somewhere different to where you expected to be. Always follow what feels right over sticking with a plan. 

Gardening aka Let The Characters Take The Lead

…this is fanfic. Let’s be honest, we know that most of it is juicy interpersonal stuff. So while planning is all well and good, I think gardening works a lot better. When writing the maths teacher fic, I went in pretty much blind. I had a couple of vague ideas of what I wanted to achieve, but I also wanted the relationship I was developing to be as absolutely genuine/believable as possible (which, according to the general consensus, it is). 

The way to do that?

Don’t try and force things between the characters. Sometimes you might start a scene with a particular moment in mind, and that’s all good, but for me personally, I’ve found that you tend to get results that are more organic by simply going into a scene blind and seeing what the characters do. You should still, hopefully, have an idea of what you want to happen, but the characters and their ways of reacting to things should always come first. 

Seriously, if you’ve got the characterisation down, they’ll do the hard work for you. 

Maybe they’ll get to where you wanted, maybe they won’t. But it’s actually a really fun ride, doing it this way. When are they going to kiss? When are they going to fuck? Who knows? Not me! How could I know, when I haven’t yet seen/created the unique and particular path of events that gets them to that point? 

Like, I went into a chapter once, intending for a child character to kill a guy. But when it came to writing the scene, I just wasn’t quite sure if she would actually do it, even with her evil psychopathic mother egging her on. So I gave the kid the reins/gun, and sat back to see what happened. She ended up shooting him non-fatally, only for him to be killed by the vaguely disappointed mother instead. I was like “oh, okay, cool, that works”. 

Garden. Have fun letting the characters surprise you!

Dialogue

Dialogue is the make or break of a story, really. And the trick to dialogue is to make it authentic, and give the characters their own unique voices. 

First one is simple. Make sure the dialogue sounds like how people actually talk. Anyone who has read any of my fics knows that I use “-” and “…” and “um” and “uh” liberally. That’s because humans, modern day ones at least, aren’t always the most eloquent of creatures. We mumble and say the wrong thing, or get distracted halfway through, or forget what we were going to say, and hesitate when we’re unsure (even posh, eloquent characters, they just do it less and use bigger words in between). Let the characters do this. 

Saying the dialogue out loud will help a lot. Also, you could also try verbally paraphrasing a conversation from the fic to a friend, and you’ll likely find some of the dialogue coming out a lot more casually/authentically. 

As for giving the characters their own unique voices, that’s just down to knowing your canon and being in tune with the characters, which is a crucial thing but unfortunately not something I can really give advice on, you’ve gotta get those in your head on your own. 

Details Matter

Different details matter in different stories. And getting them wrong can really break the immersion.

If you’re writing characters that come from a different place to you, make sure you know how people from that place talk! Americans, don’t you fucking dare have a British character call somebody ‘Mom’, it breaks the immersion completely and makes me want to punch something. It’s ‘Mum’, for anyone from UK/Aus/NZ. And same with Brits writing American characters, but the other way around. This goes for any UK/US/Aus/NZ/Canada language difference. Find out what your character calls things.

Working details out can seem unnecessary, or going over the top, but honestly, half the time you realise that you’ve gone and got something wrong, and next thing you know the entire plot has a gaping hole in it, or a character doesn’t know something they got told three months back, but you forgot about it. 

Like, okay, I have a day by day plan of the timeline of the maths teacher fic (and, going forward, its general universe), because I was trying to weave in all this original material through the show canon (and now, write several stories/oneshot set at the same time within that verse, focused on different characters/things), and if I hadn’t done that, I would have royally fucked myself over multiple times. 

I’m not saying everyone has to make a timeline that detailed, because for a lot of stories it wouldn’t be remotely necessary, but it was for this particular one. 

But just details in general. Do your research, check that thing on the wiki, get specific with details about a character, even if they’re just a minor one (though maybe stick to just one or two details, in this case). 

This kind of goes along with show, don’t tell. Like you could tell the readers blatantly that a character loves a thing, or you could talk about how they wearing clothing printed with the thing and have them jabbering on about it excitedly, you know? 

Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need information!

Seek out people who are experts in something you need to know about. This might be kink (bless the friends I’ve made through fic in the last six months or so, who have helped me in this area), or something specific to their country’s society/culture/choice of words for a certain thing. 

Also, if you’re trying to add diversity in your fics, and you hopefully should be, ask friends or people on Tumblr from within the group you’re trying to include to get information! Want to write a trans guy? Go find a trans guy to talk to about it! (I did this with a demigirl character recently, and got about four or five really helpful people more than happy to give me the info I was looking for, they were really excited about the prospect of demigirl characters existing at all.) It’s really easy to add in background diversity regardless of what fandom you’re writing for, and it can make a lot of difference to any readers who find themselves unexpectedly represented, even if only in a minor or one time character. 

In Conclusion:

Know your characters, and what they want, and how they talk. Let them lead the story, because they’re why you’re here, and doing all this. Give them real and imperfect voices and qualities, and let them make mistakes and apologise.

And do your research, so you get the details right.

I’m so glad you can see yourself in Elide!! That makes me happy. And ugh. If she gets magically healed I will SCREAM. I get that Yrene could feasibly, help with some of the pain. But if she’s going to heal Elide, I need a LOT. Like Yrene having to rebreak the bones and cut her open and go in a scrape away tissue and misshapen bone—real world surgery shit. If she just waves her hand and suddenly Elide is fine, I’ll scream. Ugh. Please. God. No. And I feel you on Chaol’s novel. Cuz I think he will be healed. But there is a way to do it so that it’s not a magical cure all. And I think it could be a nice moment for Maas to shed some light on some of her readers who can identify with his situation. elle just sent me a screenshot of the ‘late dawns’ fic and it’s the most disgusting thing i’ve ever read?

I could barely read that. I felt sick to my stomach because that’s straight up abuse, nothing more. I know it’s fiction and all but even fiction has a damn limit, especially if your stuff can be read by people who are younger than 18. 

There are so many problems with just that brief part i’ve read: besides the sexist slurs, there’s both psychological and physical abuse… by a character who’s supposed to be Gerard. 

Some people will read that and think that’s the norm. That if you cheat you deserve to be insulted and abused. It’s so fucked up the fact that someone would feel comfortable writing that thing associating it with Gerard too! 

Also, Elle just sent me the quote: “You remember the safe word? Forget it. It won’t matter tonight.” excuse me, what?

The safe word (a code word the couple agrees on, to use in case everything becomes too much and they need to stop) should always, always matter. No matter how angry* you are. Safety and consent come always first.

 *I added consent because if you use the safe word and your partner ignores you, that’s where the consent gets thrown out of the window and the whole thing becomes abuse.  

I truly hope that everyone who read that ‘fic’ knows that no matter what, no one should ever insult you, lay a finger on you, and treating you as you don’t deserve respect.

F said it pretty damn well but I just want to reiterate the fact that this is being associated with Gerard of all people. A real, actual human who has mentioned before that he doesn’t mind the fanfiction but I’m certain that portraying him as an abusive husband doesn’t apply to that. F and I are on the older side of the bandom spectrum and that makes us able to recognize the unhealthy portrayal of this relationship right away. But I can picture a 13 or 14 year old me reading fics like that and growing to believe that that’s the normal thing in relationships. But it shouldn’t be. I beg of you to get help if you’re in a relationship like the one portrayed in that fic. I beg of you to help people who are in relationships like that. There’s a difference between kinky and unhealthy and what they wrote completely crosses the line. -Elle

well, a lot of people including myself say that yes, animals do go to heaven!! but if you wanna get deep into mormon teachings or whatever heres what i got 

from the scriptures, we know that animals have living souls from god, who “breathed into them the breath of life” (moses 3:19). we also know that “not one hair, neither mote, shall be lost” from the plants and animals god created (doctrine and covenants 29:23-25). god also promised he “will make them to lie down safely” in the last days (hosea 2:18).

in jesus’s teachings of the sparrows “are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before god?” (luke 12:5). if the sparrows aren’t forgotten than why would god forget any other animal?? unless he just likes sparrows i mean sparrows are neat

if you wanna talk prophets, in president joseph fielding smith’s october 1928 conference address, he said, “the animals, the fishes of the sea, the fowls of the air, as well as man, are to be recreated, or renewed, through the resurrection, for they too are living souls.” he also wrote in answers to gospel questions’ that “animals do have spirits and that through the redemption made by our savior they will come forth in the resurrection to enjoy the blessing of immortal life.”

tl;dr: yes! mormons do believe animals go to heaven. thank u for going to me to ask, i feel flattered

Or was it just Nobu? And if Madam Gao IS Hand, as per Iron Fist, does that mean she's in a different faction than Nobu, and from Bakuto? How many factions are there, besides The Nail, in the comics? And Danny also mentioned Crane Mother a few times, is it safe to assume Madam Gao isn't her? Thks!

    You’re very welcome! We didn’t notice any previous hints that Madame Gao was connected to the Hand (and trust us– we were looking), so that was a nice surprise. We know that her faction is working at cross-purposes with Bakuto’s, since he locked her up and tried to steal her position of power at Rand Enterprises. And considering their shortage of on-screen interactions, it’s safe to assume that she and Nobu might be rivals as well… or at least not close allies. They seemed okay working alongside each other in Daredevil Season 1, but they never directly helped each other as far as we know. Gao referenced “Nobu’s clan” as if they were a separate entity. And she certainly seemed unconcerned one way or the other about his activities in DD Season 2. This makes us wonder about the events of The Defenders, and what role Madame Gao will play. The Elektra/Black Sky situation seems to have been a Nobu project. But at the same time, we know that both Gao and Nobu are tied to whatever’s going on at Midland Circle (which was listed as a source of Gao’s funds on the tablet Danny stole). How closely will Madame Gao be involved in the Hand’s Defenders activities? Whose side will she be on? There are still so many Hand-related secrets that anything seems possible. We love all of the complex politics that Iron Fist introduced, which allow for all kinds of possible alliances that we may not know about yet.  

    We’re also intrigued by the way Crane Mother is being used, and we’re asking the same questions you are. We know that the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven exist in the MCU, but rather than being connected to K’un-Zi, her 616 home city, here she seems to be a patron figure for the warriors of K’un-Lun.

    We’ve essentially only been assuming that Gao is Crane Mother out of habit, and from a lack of evidence suggesting otherwise, and we are currently reevaluating that assumption. She could be anybody. (We played around with the possibility of her being the August Personage in Jade for a while, which would have been awesome, but it was just a pet theory and now seems unlikely– since, obviously, Danny would recognize her. Or maybe she’s a revised version of Master Khan? Anyway. The possibilities are endless…) Since we now know for sure that Gao is a member of the Hand, it wouldn’t make a ton of sense for her to also hold a powerful position in K’un-Lun. However… we’re still not ready to rule anything out, particularly as far as Madame Gao is concerned. She’s like Nick Fury. Her secrets have secrets. We know that her home is “a considerable distance farther” from New York than China (DD Season 1)– a description that we’ve always assumed alluded to the dimension-traversing Capital Cities. We know that she is very old and very powerful.

(By the way, we want to hear the rest of that story!)

    We know that she has had run-ins with previous Iron Fists. And more to the point, we know that she once (or maybe more than once?) took a very pleasant-sounding trip to K’un-Lun.

    If she’s nothing more than the high-ranking Hand thug that she presents herself to be, what the heck was she doing there? Why does she speak so fondly of it? Did K’un-Lun have a different relationship with the Hand at one point? Was this before she joined the Hand? And you can’t just stroll into K’un-Lun– the mere fact of her having been able to get there is significant. While it’s seeming less and less likely that Gao could be Crane Mother, since Gao is with the Hand and we don’t even know what form Crane Mother might take in this universe, or if she’s even still around, the fact that they both have ties to K’un-Lun means that the possibility can’t be ruled out quite yet. In any case, whoever Gao might be, we know that there’s got to be more to her than what she’s revealed so far. She has displayed a flavor of superpowers that we haven’t seen from any of the other high-ranking Hand characters, and her connection to the Capital Cities brings up all kinds of exciting questions.    

    In the comics– as, it seems, in the MCU– the Hand is a giant, global organization with any number of smaller factions and a notable amount of in-fighting. Incidentally, the Nail isn’t so much a faction on its own as it is a smaller, roving unit that serves the Hand. While the whole organization does tend to work toward the same goals, and they will fall in behind whoever is in charge at the moment (because the Hand is big on duty and has some pretty severe punishments), it is far from unified. Officially, there are five regional factions (Japan, Eurasia, Africa, North America, and South America), plus Snakeroot– a secret, select group at the heart of the Hand that handles Beast-related activities. Any number of splinter groups have popped up within these official delineations. The regions have been known to disagree, occasionally working at odds with each other. A relevant example here is the 616 version of Bakuto, the short-lived head of the South American branch. Comics Bakuto was a young, stubborn guy with very little respect for tradition, who was completely willing to butt heads with the other Hand leaders on matters of policy and the future of the organization.  

Takashi: “And you, Bakuto, must abide by the daimyos’ decision. Your sensei, Izanagi, understood that. We were unanimous.”

Bakuto: “Izanagi is dead, old man. Now I am daimyo in his place… and you are no longer unanimous.”

    As we mentioned, we are loving all of the in-fighting in the MCU Hand, so we’re really happy that this is an element from the comics that is being expanded upon.
