alpine lakes wilderness area

Handies Peak Wilderness Study Area in Colorado is breathtaking in the summer. Handies Peak rises 14,048 feet over the area, and this vibrant wilderness also hosts three major canyons, glacial cirques and three alpine lakes. Handies Peak is one of more than 500 wilderness study areas – lands unspoiled by roads or other development that provide outstanding opportunities for solitude. Photo by Bob Wick, @mypubliclands.

Welcome Friend Sauer Collection.  ca 1930.

Welcome and Celia Sauer married in 1928 and began taking trips to the mountain lakes near Leavenworth, Washington.  Together they visited nearly all of the lakes that were later protected as the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area.  These photos were scanned in May 2014 from a collection of nearly 700 2 ½ x 4 ¼ inch negatives that Welcome and Celia shot on their Kodak No. 1A Series III folding camera.
