all things are relative

Ok but imaginary friends (ways humans are weird)

Humans pack bond. We just do. Aliens learn quickly that spending any significant amount of time not being actively antagonistic to a human, they will bond with you.
They bond with other humans. While humans do not necessarily bond with everyone it’s pretty easy to become low-key with others for most people. More serious bonds take more time.
Humans bond with animals capable of bonding with the human. They bring both predator and prey (hopefully not together) into their homes and make them part of the family.
Humans do the same with animals that can’t bond because their brains aren’t wired for it. We don’t care. We love them anyway.
Humans bond with inanimate objects. It’s actively encourage for child to build social skills by practicing on toys. Adults even do it
They name cars, computers, phones, and other things.
All these can be explained and understood relatively easily.
But imaginary friends…the aliens don’t get it. Humans pack bond with things that DO NOT EXIST
they have bonds sometimes closer than those to any of their peer group. Child play with these nonexistent things actively and we don’t find it weird. Adults put out extra place settings at the table for their childrens imaginary friends. They chose a different seat if a child tells them that a clearly empty chair is their imaginary friend’s chair.

Agreed, Jaspethyst is underrated but... aren't they relatives?

nah man, i wouldnt ever say that pearls or quartzes or even diamonds that are the same type of gem are related because I see it as more of a race of gems (sort of like elves, dwarves, etc; they have similar features but are not all family) 👌✨

Hello, I have finally done this! Look at me actually doing things! :)

(Note: don’t be Andrew in this. The fish are trying to quit smoking; don’t enable them.)

Sometimes, Neil couldn’t quite think about his time on the run in a straightforward sort of way. It all twisted in on itself, becoming something summarized and nonlinear. There were posted signs all around it in Neil’s brain: Do not attempt to touch the memory lump; do not attempt to feed the memory lump.

So, when Matt asked, Neil really couldn’t say how long ago it had been that he’d been on a boat. Eight names. That was all he could say about it – eight names ago. How many years ago, how old he’d been, he couldn’t really say for sure.

Andrew would know. Andrew would be able to translate. But Andrew had disappeared for the moment, and Neil couldn’t very well say to Matt, “It was back when my name was Stefan.” So, Neil shrugged.

EXO Waking You Up in The Morning

Xiumin:

You’d be woken up by the faint smell of coffee and Xiumin sitting next to you on the bed, softly stroking your hair. You’d look up at him, your eyes swollen with sleep, astonished at how angelic he looked even in the morning. “I have some coffee made, jagi, come down when you’re ready,” he’d say quietly, a small smile on his face.

Chen:

Chen would wake you up unintentionally with all of his banging around and tired groaning as he made his way around the bedroom. You’d watch him, amused, as he sleepily banged into the door on the way out of the bedroom. He’d later come in to tell you he made breakfast, which consisted of bagels made with pure love.

Baekhyun:

Becoming even more childish when he’s tired, Baekhyun would jump onto the bed, abruptly interrupting your sleep.  You’d sit up, your hair sticking in every direction, and a beautiful smile would spread across his face. He’d playfully pat down your hair before grabbing your hand and gently leading you down to the kitchen so you could have breakfast together.

Chanyeol:

Chanyeol wouldn’t even be out of bed before he woke you up, gently prodding you in the shoulder. Your eyes would slowly open and lock with his, and you wouldn’t be able to hide your smile at his bed head and puffy face. He’d pull you closer and you’d end up sleeping another hour in each other’s arms before starting your day.

Lay:

The picture-perfect boyfriend, Lay would get up before you to prepare a cute, small breakfast of fruit, yogurt, and juice. He’d wake you up with a kiss to the forehead, intertwining your fingers with his. He’d patiently wait until you were ready to head downstairs, watching you with a gentle smile as you stumbled around the room.

D.O:

A bit of a master chef himself, D.O would’ve done his best to create a hearty breakfast for the day ahead. You’d wake up from the scent of bacon wafting into your room, and when you waddled downstairs you’d see your boyfriend busily cooking, an apron loosely tied around his waist. You’d surprise him with a backhug, causing him to smile and gently kiss your cheek.

Suho:

Another bed-bug, Suho would wake you up with his shifting around as he buried deeper into the covers. You’d watch him, smiling, as he quietly slid closer to you, under the impression that you were still sleeping. He’d wrap his arms around you and rest his head on your chest, quickly falling back asleep.

Kai:

As much as Kai would like to stay in bed all day, he had things to do so he’d get up relatively early and get ready. Not one for cooking, he’d set out a bowl of cereal for you before kissing you awake. When you went downstairs, you wouldn’t be able to contain your laughter as you saw the “ornate” breakfast he prepared for you. He’d laugh with you, complimenting himself on how great of a cook he is.

Sehun:

More playful when he’s tired, Sehun would start poking your sides to wake you up. When you did, you’d just look at him, your eyes narrowed slightly. Before you knew it, you and your boyfriend were locked in the tickle fight of the century. When you were both thoroughly red and out of breath, you made your way to the kitchen for breakfast.

Okay, before I start I wanna say: all things are relative, of course, because we cannot know another person’s experience. That being said, here’s a list of some of the most difficult placements & aspects in a natal chart. I’ve seen placements on this list impact people negatively on more than a few occasions. And of course, the entire chart is important, but these particular placements & aspects can create a lot of tension and difficulties just on their own.

- Dejanira (asteroid) conjunct the moon
- Chiron in hard aspect to the moon, ascendant
- Venus square Saturn
- Moon square Pluto
- Moon, Venus, Mars, Saturn in the 12th
- Saturn in the 1st, 4th, 7th house

Who is Legion

FX is airing a new show called Legion based off of the character Legion from X-Men. The show exists in the XMCU which means he lives in the revamped timeline where Cyclops is alive and none of those first horrible movies existed but it’s not necessarily going to have any connections to the X-Men yet. The character Legion is also going to be an original take on the character but he is so great that I’m going to give you the canonical history of his life so far. It’ll be interesting to see what the keep the same; they definitely kept his mental illnesses.

Legion’s real name is David Charles Haller, a Jewish man from Haifa Israel who canonically can’t grow his hair into anything but a gigantic mohawk, and he is an omega level mutant which means he has practically God–like powers.

His father is Charles Xavier, Proffessor X himself, but his mother, Gabrielle Haller, kept that a secret for a very long time. Gabrielle met Charles at a hospital where he was using his psychic abilities to alleviate trauma of the Holocaust survivors. They had a short fling in which David was conceived but Gabrielle, suspicious of his psychic abilities, kept David a secret and David’s godfather, Daniel Shomron, stepped in to help raise him.

When Gabrielle entered the Israeli Diplomatic Service she and her family were attacked by a Palestinian terrorist cell. Gabrielle and David survived, but Daniel used his body to shield David from the bullets and was killed. The trauma activated David’s mutant genes early (he was 10 years old and they don’t usually manifest until puberty) and as his psychic abilities turned on he killed all of the terrorists. David went comatose and absorbed the psyche of one of the terrorists who took control of his body, still comatose, and fought the growing alter egos forming in David’s Mindscape due to his DID

Gabrielle turned to the renowned geneticist Moira MacTaggert, coincidentally another one of Charles Xavier’s ex girlfriends, who insisted Charles come to treat him personally. Charles found that David had very similar mutant abilities to his own, only much stronger, then found out he was his father.

By joining the war in David’s Mindscape Charles was able to wake David back up and most of the alter egos were destroyed but they continued to develop unchecked.

Legion/David gained and lost control of himself many times, hurting many people even murdering Destiny, Mystique’s wife, when she tried to intervene with him and he saw through her precognitive abilities how devastating his future would become.

David decided he would realize his father’s dream of mutants and humans coexisting and to do that he traveled back in time to his own conception to kill Magneto who Charles was also with at the time.

Time travel shenanigans ensue and Bishop ends it by showing David what future he is actually creating. David was ashamed and in the reconstructed timeline he was thought to be dead, his mother even questioned his conception.

Years later David was discovered trapped in a concrete box and once he escaped he was transported forward in time where Bishop resided. It was a dystopian future and David was immediately captured and put into slavery. He got out of it somehow, these sort of things happen quite a bit to him. The X-Men finally took him in and Karma and Magik began working with him to get better but he still had major reality twisting hiccups while he was trying to be good but his ever increasing alter egos keep taking over. Meanwhile his relationship with his father continued to be estranged; Charles seemed to think he was too dangerous unless he wanted to utilize his powers or alternate personalities. Magick  is the only one that seems to consistently try to help him but sometimes with ulterior motives

Now for the really good part. X-Men Legacy: Legion written by Simon Spurrier.

Up until this point Legion was very inconsistently written because he had been a very minor character but in Spurrier’s Legion series the loose ends of the story are tightened and we actually see David as David. Before he only momentarily surfaced to find that he had caused a disaster and everyone was debating on whether or not he should be put down.

Charles had sent David to a secluded place for rehabilitation and never came back, as is his pattern with David. After the event of Avengers vs X-Men where Charles dies David finally had to face the fact that his father was never going to come for him, he was never going to publicly acknowledge him, and he never planned to let David return to the real world.

When he felt his father pass away David’s power surged and he wiped out the community he was living in, before his Guru died he told David to wait for the X-Men to come to relocate him again but David left, deciding he finally needed to change the pattern of his life, get a grip on himself, and find a way to see his father’s dream of coexistence come true. He does this by making himself somewhat of an invisible mercenary, trying to save mutants the X-Men hadn’t gotten.

David turns his Mindscape into a prison to keep all of the alter egos contained which worked relatively well, all things considered

Blindfold, a mutant nearly as powerful and ostracized as he is, seems to have an instinctual connection to him.

Blindfold is Ruth Aldine, and she takes after her legendary grandmother Destiny. The Destiny that David accidentally murdered years before. Ruth has a very traumatic history; she was powerful she was born with her mutant abilities already developing and she was born blind, specifically she was born with no eyes at all. When Ruth’s father left her brother Luca blamed her because she was a mutant and tried to kill her but accidentally killed their mother instead. Luca joins a radical anti-mutant group and ends up fracturing her mind which gives her schizophrenia and a very prominent speech impediment

She takes refuge in the X-Men mansion/school but the way she speaks, looks, and is unable to restrain herself from reading everyone’s minds makes her a social outcast

The X-Men eventually track David down with the help of Ruth’s powers

 And David isn’t having it

The X-Men try to keep Ruth from him but through their mysterious connection Ruth easily enters David’s Mindscape where she is partially able to speak normally, depending on her mood

She is able to get through to him until one of his altars breaks out and attacks her, knocking her out.

David lets the X-Men take the mutant children he had found and secretly follows them back to watch over Ruth who is now comatose. He enters her subconscious and sees her whole life, specifically her bullies

He brings her back to consciousness and they meet briefly as he escapes

She keeps track of him by following him in her astral body, not understanding quite how powerful he is and that he always knows where she is

He tracks down the radical group her brother had joined and sets out to destroy them and her brother. She “reveals” herself to him telling him to knock it the fuck off.

She makes him promise not to hurt them so he sort of complies by messing with their minds so they will no longer be a threat. David continues on his mission to save mutants and impress Ruth and she continues to be his conscious while they secretly meet on the astral plane

As this is all going on David is trying to deal with what looks like his father’s consciousness personified in his Mindscape jail. The entity does claim to be Charles Xavier and it continually terrorizes all of the alter egos and mocks David, among other things…

The golden pervert, David and Ruth’s inherent connection, and because it’s X-Men everything is leading to a future dystopia where David loses control again but this time destroys everything. Ruth will have to kill him because she’s the only one strong enough and deeply embedded in him to destroy all of the alternate personalities along with David

but David insists that he can change fate. He’s powerful enough and with Ruth as his one that gives him “purpose” he’s pretty sure he can pull it off

But he’s going to do it by changing the will of people that will influence the dystopian future. Ruth argues that it’s immoral, especially to punish people for things they haven’t done yet. It was against Charles Xavier’s dream to force people into anything (although he often did it, unbeknownst to them) but David isn’t empathetic, in fact he already took out Aarkus before asking her permission. Ruth was mad but soon thereafter she sought him out again by using Cerebra

But he had already made a deal with the golden pervert in his brain that in exchange for checking on the future again the pervert could have controlled his body for one minute. (Each of David’s altars personify one of his thousands of powers.) David sees the apocalyptic future he creates and runs off to an ideological facility that “cure” mutants by giving them medication that will give them brain damage, blocking their ability to use their powers. Ruth goes to her peers and the X-Men asking for help to get David out of this but it takes a lot of convincing

David he realizes that although the patients seem to be well their minds are really shattered but another apparition of his father appears, reminding him of his failures and making him feel guilty for denying his heritage but David blocks amount and decides to go through with the cure anyway

The operator of the facility reveals himself to be the Red Skull and the one that caused him to see his father because he had implanted Charles Xavier’s brain into himself, hoping the shame of giving up would make David want to fight but David still doesn’t want to

He is given the medication and they air his conversion live on TV

Ruth appears with X-Men she had convinced to come help her save him which is what the Red Skull had apparently been aiming for and the X-Men are live on TV appearing suddenly in what appears to be a peaceful facility to stop a man who admits to being a monster from “rehabilitation” but David had planned on him planning this and uses that moment to bring in a young mutant he had saved earlier. The boy’s ability was that everyone immediately loves him and believes anything he said, practically giving him the ability to change reality. Through live TV he convinced everyone watching that the mutants weren’t their enemy. He tries to evoke empathy but that doesn’t work as well

Of course a battle with Red Skull ensues which is when the golden pervert who looks like Charles Xavier comes to take his one minute with complete control of David’s body. He wants Xavier’s brain for himself.

Ruth fights to get the minute to run out so David can take control of his body again and then we have this really funny moment

Obviously this isn’t the end. Not only because it’s comic books, but because this is a cliffhanger. The ending is kind of amazing so I want to encourage you guys to go read it.

You can buy them on comixology, book retailers, but check your local libraries as well. My local library is nothing but comic books and VHS copies of Titanic.

BRIGID (Celtic goddess-Saint)

In Celtic religion and Irish mythology, Brigid (exalted one) is the daughter of Dagda, and had two sisters, also named Brigid, and that’s why she’s considered a classic Celtic Triple deity.

Brigid is the patroness of poetry, smithing, medicine, arts and crafts, cattle and other livestock, sacred wells, the arrival of early spring, all things perceived to be of relatively high dimensions such as high-rising flames, highlands, hill-forts and upland areas; and of activities and states conceived as psychologically lofty and elevated, such as wisdom, excellence, perfection, high intelligence, poetic eloquence, craftsmanship (especially blacksmithing), healing ability, druidic knowledge and skill in warfare, and also seems to have been the Celtic equivalent of the Roman Minerva and the Greek Athena.
In the Christian era, nineteen nuns at Kildare tended a perpetual flame for the Saint, which is widely believed to be a continuation of a pre-Christian practice of women tending a flame in her honour.

Pack Sleepover

PAUL LAHOTE IMAGINE

Requested: “Could you do a Paul from Twilight imagine of for some reason the whole pack has to stay at Sam and Emily’s so it’s basically a giant slumber party in the living room and Paul and his imprint are all cuddled up together trying to sleep but the rest of the pack is a bunch of annoying brats??”

Sorry for the wait, exams got me pretty stressed but they are finally over now!  I hope you like it, even though it is a little shorter than normal!

Word Count: 741

REQUESTS ARE CLOSED.

The idea of the sleepover was to have some time to relax together.  The pack had had a lot going on lately, a lot of vampire related troubles had been keeping them up at night and on patrol all day.  Now that everything was sorted and things were relatively normal again, Sam had suggested having a pack sleepover.  I suspected he wouldn’t suggest it again.  The food had disappeared almost as soon as it was placed on the table and as a result most of the pack were on sugar highs.  The pack tended to be energetic anyway but with a whole tonne of sugar running through their veins they were crazy.

In a useless attempt at calming the pack down a little somebody had put a movie on.  Most of the pack were ignoring it completely though, or hadn’t even noticed it was on.  They were too busy winding each other up and running around like 5-year-olds at a birthday party.  It was quite funny to watch to be honest, I was just glad that they were smiling.  I hadn’t seen them this happy in weeks.

Paul stuck beside me, off to one side of the living room.  We were both laying in our sleeping bags, watching the drama unfold.  Paul had his arm around me as I was pressed up against his chest, feeling every vibration as he laughed at his pack mates.  Sam had given up trying to keep them all in line and had disappeared with a last despairing look, so now there were a whole bunch of teasing arguments going on around the room and a good few of them were play fighting.  At least I hoped they were pretending.

By the time the credits rolled on the movie which nobody had bothered to watch, I was ready to fall asleep.  I rolled over to face Paul, burying my face into his chest as my eyes slowly closed.  I felt him place a feather light kiss on my forehead as I hummed contentedly.  And then felt something hit the pack of my head.  I rolled back over as quick as a Flash and shot a glare at the crowd of boys giggling like little girls.
“Which one of you threw that?”  I snapped, reaching to find whatever it was that had landed in my hair.  It was a piece of popcorn.  I rolled my eyes when none of them answered and peeked over my shoulder to find Paul shooting daggers at them all.
“It was Quil.”  He muttered, grinning as there was aloud exclamation of complaint.  That grin quickly disappeared as a piece of popcorn hit him in the centre of his forehead.   I bit my lip to suppress a giggle as I lay back down again, getting comfortable.
“Are you done?”  I grumbled, closing my eyes again as Paul wrapped his arms around me.
“Nope.”  The pack chorused.

At first I tried to ignore the pack, but they sure were persistent.  They kept yelling over the room at us every time I felt like I was about to doze off and pretty soon the two of us were covered in the popcorn and jelly sweets that the rest of them had thrown our way.
“Can you guys quit it?  We’re trying to sleep?”  Paul growled.  Sometimes I wondered how on earth he managed to put up with being in their heads all of the time.  “Can you guys quit it with the cutesy coupley stuff then because we’re trying not to throw up.”  Jared quipped back and I rolled my eyes, biting back a small laugh.  I opened my eyes to see Paul watching them with a small smirk on his face.  “If us trying to sleep grosses you out then good luck with this.”  He met my eyes before leaning forward to capture my lips in his.  Much to the annoyance of the pack.  I heard a collective groan from behind me and laughed into the kiss, before pulling back, a deep blush covering my face.  I hid my face in Paul’s chest, ignoring the laughter from the pack as they noticed my tomato-like complexion.  “Can you please just let us fucking sleep?”  Paul’s eyes widened as the curse word slipped past my lips.  “I would let her sleep.”  He said, looking uneasy.  “Or she may well kill you.”  I smiled, closing my eyes.  “And I certainly won’t be the one to stop her.”

I wrote a thing earlier in the evening (technically last night because it’s now one thirty in the morning) and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t make sense but I thought I’d post it!

If you hadn’t noticed, I love it when Steve and Tony meet as strangers and are almost immediately smitten.

Rainfall had always been a peaceful part of nature.

It was soothing and calming, the way the drops of water fell down from the sky and hit the ground with an almost gentle sound. The pitter patter of rain drops, soft on the ears and the rich smell of earth which soon followed after.

Steve stared at the rain from his shelter on the train platform, his sketchbook tucked safely in his jacket. He had forgotten his backpack again, a stupid move, but he didn’t think that the rain would meet him here. The weather forecast had also promised a day of clear skies and sunshine, the weatherman giving him that terribly wide smile as he encouraged people to enjoy the day, to have fun in the sun.

A scoff left from Steve as he rolled his eyes before licking at a stray raindrop that came to rest between his lips. He had gotten caught in the sudden downpour and since he had forgotten his backpack, he had forgotten his umbrella too. So, he was soaked and in need of some warmth clothes, maybe a punching bag to release all his anger out on. The only thing that was relatively dry was his sketchbook and to think that he had thought about ditching his jacket today.

The whole day hadn’t exactly been the best and it only seemed to be going downhill. He had missed his bus on the way to work so he ended up ten minutes late. It was lucky that the manager and owner of the store was a good friend of his because Peggy gracefully let it slide. He was then hit on by multiple people today, several asking for his number and complimenting how well-fitted his shirt was. It didn’t help that Natasha and Bucky were trying their goddamn hardest not to burst in laughter as they dealt with customers. Paint somehow managed to get onto said well-fitted shirt, the shirt being white so there was no luck in getting that stain out. Then everything seemed to dial down from there until he closed the shop and found out that it was raining outside.

It was raining cats and downs as he sprinted for bus stop, nearly missing the bus that would take him to the station. He was sure that he had the look of a mad man on his face as he slumped into a wonderfully free seat and sulked all the way to his stop.

Now he was here, waiting for his train to arrive so he could just get home.

The platform wasn’t busy today, three more people were there with him as they waited for the train themselves.

There was a mother talking animatedly with her child, her face bright as her child giggled and reached up to cup their mother’s cheeks. The gesture softened the mother’s eyes and Steve felt himself smile at the sight, thinking wistfully for his own mother who rested in a hospital room.

The second was a well-dressed businessman with his briefcase and umbrella in one hand and his other hand holding up a phone to his ear. He seemed angry, his eyebrows furrowed as his mouth moved fast, loud words pouring out of it as his left wing-tipped shoe covered foot tapped angrily. Steve vaguely wondered what kind of conversations could make someone so angry but then he remembered, having had similar ones himself.

The last person was a teenage girl, earphones plugged in and her music turned up loud, a way of ignoring the world. Her gaze never moved as she simply stared in front of her, looking at the scatter of rain drops. A backpack was slung around one shoulder and a small grey cardigan rested in her arm, she seemed tired.

Steve was tired too.

With nothing interesting left to look at, he decided to look at the platform across from them and found something…well, quite interesting.

There was no one else there except for a young man who was reading a book. He was dressed rather simply, a pair of dark jeans and a sweater that looked two sizes too big. He had a head of dark curls which looked soft and almost a light brown in the overhead light. Steve didn’t know why but he couldn’t bring himself to look away because he wanted to see the man’s face. It was quite a weird thought but it was a heavy want, one that sat right on his chest.

Then he got his wish and he was stunned.

The man lifted his head up and a pair of dark brown doe-eyes were the first thing that Steve noticed. He then took in the slightly soft jawline and the smooth cheeks, pale pink lips and a straight nose. Steve almost cringed at how he sounded like a damn cliché but he couldn’t deny the fact that this man was beautiful.

It then occurred to him that he had been staring for the past two minutes and he managed to look away before he completely embarrassed himself.

The train on the other side was nearing the station and Steve watched it pull in, sadly seeing the man step in and sit himself down by a window seat. It wasn’t unusual to see attractive people at the train station but this was the first time that Steve felt a sort of longing. He actually wouldn’t mind getting to know this man and talking to him, getting to know what he does and what he was ready.

He was…interested.

Peggy and his mother would scream if they ever heard this.

But it wasn’t meant to be and this was one of those moments that just happen. There was never a chance that he’d see that man again because people never see the same person twice. Especially at the train station. The thought of that was quite painful for Steve to admit and he resigned himself to waiting for his train so he could carry on his life.

Things did have a funny way of happening though.

His attention was caught again by a sound of loud knocking and Steve turned towards it, expression curious, before his eyes widened in surprise.

Right there, on the train, was the young man smiling at him through the window and holding up a piece of paper with big writing on it.

It read:

HI, MY NAME IS TONY AND I THINK YOU’RE CUTE TOO.

Steve couldn’t smile any wider if he tried as his heart started to pound against his chest and he hurried to get his sketchbook so he could write a response but it was too late.

Tony waved, grinning as the train pulled out of the station and Steve waved back frantically, uncaring of how stupid or desperate he may look in front of the three people there.

He looked at the train until it was gone and the wide smile never left as he tried to keep down the laughter of disbelief bubbling in his throat.

It seemed like he wasn’t the only squealing on the inside as the teenager girl looked like she had witnessed something incredibly great, due to what she had just seen.

It was turning out to be a good day after all.

Tony.

A few pearls of laughter fell from his lips.

And he thinks I’m cute too.

corlys  asked:

What do you think was GRRM’s intention by making Daenerys unable to escape her ancestors’ legacy? Her ancestors literally are forcing her to “wake the dragons”. Then she proceeds by conquering cities. But there is more to her and in Meereen she tries to turn her narrative and become the benevolent ruler. But no matter how hard she tries, by the end her “blood of the dragon” and violent nature comes to the surface, and she is once again forced back on track for the quest for Westeros and IT.

What was GRRM’s intention with giving Dany these contradictory urges between (difficult) benevolence and (easy) violence? It’s, y’know, one of the major themes of the books.

Learning is not inherently an interesting thing to write about. It’s not an easy thing to write about. […] In real life, you don’t get to montage. You have to go through it day by day.

And that has been interesting, you know. Jon Snow as Lord Commander. Dany as Queen, struggling with rule. So many books don’t do that. There is a sense when you’re writing something in high fantasy, you’re in a dialogue with all the other high fantasy writers that have written. And there is always this presumption that if you are a good man, you will be a good king. [Like] Tolkien — in Return of the King, Aragorn comes back and becomes king, and then [we read that] “he ruled wisely for three hundred years.” Okay, fine. It is easy to write that sentence, “He ruled wisely”.

What does that mean, he ruled wisely? What were his tax policies? What did he do when two lords were making war on each other? Or barbarians were coming in from the North? What was his immigration policy? What about equal rights for Orcs? I mean did he just pursue a genocidal policy, “Let’s kill all these fucking Orcs who are still left over”? Or did he try to redeem them? You never actually see the nitty-gritty of ruling.

I guess there is an element of fantasy readers that don’t want to see that. I find that fascinating. Seeing someone like Dany actually trying to deal with the vestments of being a queen and getting factions and guilds and [managing the] economy. They burnt all the fields [in Meereen]. They’ve got nothing to import any more. They’re not getting any money. I find this stuff interesting. And fortunately, enough of my readers who love the books do as well.

Also, there’s sometimes a fine line between madness and greatness. Daeron I, the boy king who led a war of conquest, and even the saintly Baelor I could also be considered “mad,” if seen in a different light. ((And I must confess, I love grey characters, and those who can be interperted in many different ways. Both as a reader and a writer, I want complexity and subtlety in my fiction)) –source

I’ve always been attracted to grey characters.  I’ve always taken it as a code William Faulkner’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech from the early ‘50’s, where he said that the human heart in conflict with [itself] was the only thing worth writing about.  And I think that’s true.

The battle between good and evil is a theme of much of fantasy.  But I think the battle between good and evil is [f]ought largely within the individual human heart, by the decisions that we make.

What is bad? Bad is a label. We are human beings with heroism and self-interest and avarice in us and any human is capable of great good or great wrong. In Poland a couple of weeks ago I was reading about the history of Auschwitz – there were startling interviews with the people there. The guards had done unthinkable atrocities, but these were ordinary people. What allowed them to do this kind of evil? Then you read accounts of acts of outrageous heroism, yet the people are criminals or swindlers, one crime or another, but when forced to make a choice they make a heroic choice. This is what fascinated me about the human animal. A lot of fantasy turns on good and evil – but my take on it is that it’s fought within the human heart every day, and that’s the more interesting take. I don’t think life is that simple. –source

I think the struggle between good and evil is central to fantasy and, indeed, in some ways, central to most fiction. It’s certainly a worthy subject for fiction. But I regard the struggle between good and evil as being waged within the individual human heart. It’s not waged as fantasy would have it, where a character called the Dark Lord gathers all the evil people together and puts them in black clothing and you know they’re evil ’cause they’re really ugly and all the good people are handsome and they wear white and they meet on a big battlefield. In the real world … very few people get up in the morning and say, “Oh, I’m evil. What evil can I do today? I’m gonna cover the world with darkness, and my legions of evil will rule all.” That’s silly. You know, the greatest monsters of history, as we look back on them, thought they were the heroes of the story. You know, the villain is the hero of the other side, as sometimes said. That doesn’t mean that it’s all morally relative. That doesn’t mean that all things are equally good and evil.

I think there is good and there is evil in the world. But you know, it’s sometimes a struggle to tell one from the other and to make the right choices. And all of us, I’ve always been attracted to great characters, maybe because that’s what I see when I look around the real world, whether I read about it in history books or the news or just people I meet.

I mean, all of us have it within ourselves to be heroes. All of us have it within ourselves to be villains. We’ve all done good things in our lives, and most of us have also done selfish things, cowardly things, things that we’re ashamed of in later years. And to my mind, that’s, I don’t know, the glory of the human race. We’re such wonderfully contradictory, mixed-up creatures that we’re endlessly fascinating to write about and read about.
