all the platypuses

hc that Preston and Nerf’s egg never ran away but rather… Jasper was watching all this unfold from afar and decided that now was as good a time as any for ghostly intervention

This is based off of a character I created way back in 1988, when I was in 10th grade.  Back then I was a huge fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Fish Police, so I decided to come up with my own idea for an anthropomorphic animal comic.  Originally, he was supposed to be a police detective (because I was just literally ripping-off Fish Police); but since I’m reimagining him, I thought it would be more fun for him to be a part of a top secret US Army special forces unit, codenamed Operation: Flatfoot (because they are all super-intelligent, mutant platypuses), who infiltrate the Iron Curtain in search of interdimensional portal technology being developed by the Soviets.  The story takes place in 1988-89, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall.  I kind of like the idea of keeping everything set within the timeframe of when I originally created the character.

Of course, most everyone knows the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but if you have never heard of Fish Police, then I highly recommend checking out those old comics.

I got to meet Bill Nye at my school last year, and he was super cool. He’s very bright, and he was very much about encouraging the kids to get interested, and talked a lot about the fact that girls should be actively encouraged by schools to participate in science classes and activities, and taught in ways more friendly to girls in general.

There was a little girl who got to ask him a question (a teacher had to pick her up to put her on the stage next to him) and she was too afraid to ask her question, and he was just so nice– “you’re holding a stuffed platypus. Would you like to know about how they live?” and she kind of nodded and he proceeded to tell the whole school all he knew about platypuses and treated her like she’d done all the asking and thinking. It was so cool.
