all the love points

Well, Florence shames other women, and tries to get them to stop earning money the only way the know/can, while hypocritically being housed by a brothel madam herself. That makes her a tad worse than Margaret imo.

Yes. Florence is absolutely a hypocrite by virtue of taking Lydia’s offer. And she does shame other women. To try to get them to stop sex work, which this show has been pretty frank is not glamorous or safe or healthy.

Yes, sex work provides a way for women, who may not have any other options, to earn money and to retain their financial independence, rather than losing that independence by doing the respectable thing and getting married to a man who would then own the woman and everything she owns. (“Marriage is the worst kind of thief,” after all.) And certain kinds of sex work — if a girl manages to catch a rich keeper and become a high-class courtesan, for example — can elevate a girl to the trappings of high society and give her not only lasting financial security but also luxuries she could probably only dream about otherwise. This is why I said Margaret has pragmatic considerations for selling her daughters. She believes it gives them the best possible chance at life, and she has a point.

But, as we have also seen, sex work also leaves women open to manifold abuses at the hands of their johns or keepers. It not only stains them with social shame that will stick to them for a lifetime but also presents a very real danger of rape, of being beaten, of getting pregnant out of wedlock, of contracting venereal disease (it’s not an uncommon fan theory, for example, that Florence’s blindness might be due to such a thing) … It is hard, dangerous, and demeaning work, even if you’re lucky enough to have a bawd as kind as Margaret, and most of these girls will never reach the heights Charlotte and Lucy aspire to. Most of them will have short, ill-fated careers. And even courtesans – the ones we’ve seen, at least – truly enjoy only the trappings of the higher class. They are still possessions. They are still outsiders at the dinner table. They are still vulnerable to their keepers and must obey them. There is a sort of freedom and agency to being a sex worker, but it is by no means pretty or absolute.

Florence’s approach is harsh, but she, too, has a point. She’s been there. She knows. So, again: Do we damn the woman who’s trying to save women from a dangerous lifestyle simply because her approach is harsh and moralistic and because she, being very poor and having a daughter to take care of, accepts a devil’s bargain for shelter? Do we praise Margaret for being a typically kind woman and a relatively good bawd while ignoring that she is, nonetheless, a businesswoman who turns a bleeding Emily away and insists Lucy continue in the profession even over Lucy’s protests and misery?

Harlots does not demonize sex workers, but nor does it glamorize sex work. It is a complicated and multifaceted issue, and Florence and Margaret alike are complicated and multifaceted women who both have a point.

every bioware animation
  • back of the head scratch
  • a character shaking their head in disbelief or disgust with hand on their forehead, looking down
  • that kiss animation used since origins and in every mass effect game where they very slowly go in, hesitate, bop their heads around, and really go in for the kiss
  • when a character, usually female, talks and puts their two hands in front of them like a robot and shakes them to illustrate their point
  • a character leans back on one leg with their arms loose
  • the exit-stage-right an NPC does after a conversation ends
  • angry limp wrist pointing
  • neck/collar bone scratch
  • a slow crossing of the arms in times of suspicion
  • that punch animation
  • drinking alcohol and violently shaking head
  • a character gives a half smile with an eyebrow raised
  • pointing behind with thumb, body turns very slightly

there’s a lot of discourse in the voltron fandom rn but i think we can all agree that pidge is an actual blessing so

(also just a heads up pidge is referred to using they/them pronouns in this)

yes hi hello sorry for the inactivity everybody, been playing a lot of pokeymans resently (& really enjoying everything about it!!) and, actually, i think i’m gonna go and play some more now, but first here are some doodles of Lillie!!! i love her

something that i really, really hope happens in regards to finn and rey’s relationship in the upcoming films is a huge emphasis on how much FINN means to rey.

because a lot of ugly racists and re/ylos like to say that their relationship is so obviously ~one sided, that finn clearly likes rey but she doesn’t feel as strongly for him (when that’s far from the truth).

so what i REALLY want to see is rey being affectionate towards finn. i want to see her run to him and embrace him, i want to see her laugh at his jokes and look at him like he’s the only thing in the galaxy. i want HER to be the one to say “i love you,” or something along those lines, first- because not only would that be GREAT character development for rey, who has gone so long without having anyone and has finally allowed herself to grow attached to and feel for someone else- but also because it would prove that rey loves finn. it would prove that yes, rey, the white woman protagonist of this trilogy, loves finn, the black man protagonist of this trilogy.

so lucasfilm, please give me a rey who misses finn so much it hurts while she’s away with luke, a rey who cries over him and for him, a rey who is so obviously smitten with this good, brave, incredible man so that nobody can deny that finn is loved by her.

for once, let a black man be the hero; let him “get the girl,” let him be the shining light for those around him- let finn be loved, fiercely and undeniably, so that nobody can deny how important and amazing he is.

Some fun Black Sails & Zach McGowan tidbits from MagicCon this weekend:

- Zach thinks that Toby Schmitz is the most like his character on the show in real life. He also mentioned Toby Stephens for the same quickly and Clara as the most dissimilar.

- During the scene where he was buried alive he was ACTUALLY buried alive under 4 feet of earth. He wondered for a moment if the crew actually forgot him down there. “So I guess being buried alive is one thing I have in common with Charles Vane”

- He LOVED filming 2x10.

- Zach used to be a chef. Used to be called ‘the chopper’ because he is great at chopping stuff. He loves ‘handling big pieces of meat and seeing what’s inside them’. His words. He also used to narrate nature documentaries, in particular about sharks. He knows shit about sharks.

- Apparently the cast & crew started making out with Ned Low’s cut off head whilst filming that ep.

- During autographs he told me he can’t draw for shit and we agreed that Vane would draw stick people comics of Vane stabbing Flint in the back.

Okay I didn’t want to say anything, but, I think it’s time that everyone faced reality. No one else is speaking up, so I’ve gotta.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts and comics and art about Lance making fun of Keith for being Texan recently. And as funny and cute as they are, that’s just wrong to me. It’s absolutely wrong. I mean, I’ve seen some serious mischaracterization of the Voltron crew before, but the fact that so many people have got it so wrong is just blowing my mind. We’ve got to face the facts people, Lance wouldn’t be making jokes about Keith being Texan.

Hunk would

See? :D
