all my favorite seiyuus!!

Happy Birthday Sanji~!

Today it’s Sanji’s birthday!

Exactly one year ago I was in Tokyo and visited the Mugiwara Store and enjoying the Day of Sanji in the Year of Sanji.

Now, I’ve been extremely busy for the last six months and I haven’t been able to write even half of the posts I come up with in my head. But today is Sanji’s birthday and he’s my favorite anime character of all time. So, I am going to talk about my love for Sanji, and all (some of) the reasons to why he’s my favorite.

Under the cut you’ll find a lot of love and me being biased! Now on to my list of reasons to love Sanji.

English

“Be stronger”, as much as you think like that
You’re distancing yourself from your goal
Won’t adding more rules for yourself
Only hold you back?

Dance like this, like this, just like this
Any style is fine (it’s your identity)
More, dance like this, show it to me just like this
If you’ll change into your ideal you
Free your mind and just let yourself go

If you start by seizing this moment
Then it won’t just end like this
At that moment, your life will change
If you’ll just start, it’s the time
Now’s your timing to change
Don’t be afraid, you’re with me
Now’s your timing to realize
If you don’t want to lose it, change it

Whether you regress or progress
It’s up to you, your free option
Wouldn’t it be fine to try reconstructing everything
Without fear?

Dance like this, like this, just like this
Any form is fine (it’s the one only you can have)
More, dance like this, show it to me just like this
Don’t just wait until you can meet the ideal you

If you start by seizing this moment
You’ll bring forth a new world
At that moment, your life will change
If you’ve lost your way, it’s the time
Now’s your timing to change
Don’t be afraid, you’re with me
Now’s your timing to realize
If you don’t want to lose it, change it

If you start by seizing this moment
Then it won’t just end like this
At that moment, your life will change
If you’ll just start, it’s the time
Now’s your timing to change
Don’t be afraid, you’re with me
Now’s your timing to realize
If you don’t want to lose it, change it

If you consider Haruka’s state of mind during that scene - while understanding nothing himself, don’t you think that Rin, who has his eyes set firmly on the future, might appeared to have been shining to him? — Shimazaki Nobunaga [x]

All my love to Hiroaki Hirata

Today, the 7th of August, is actually the birthday of Hiroaki Hirata, the voice behind Sanji. I felt like this would be a good opportunity to explain my love for this great seiyuu and also how he plays a part in my love for Sanji and even One Piece as a whole.

Hiroaki Hirata is one of my favorite seiyuu of all time (probably even my number 1), and even just having him as a voice present in a scene makes me more interested in what’s going on. For exmaple hearing him voice other characters in One Piece like Carue unconciously makes me enjoy the moments with Carue more. Basically I just love hearing his voice.

I’ve always had a thing for good voices, and when I started watching anime in Japanese in 2004 there were a few Japanese voice actors that immediately captured my attention. (I am a huge seiyuu nerd) Naruto was one of the first shows I saw and even though it was a fairly small role, I fell for Genma right away. He was cool and I loved his design, not to mention his voice really got to me. It was the first small step towards me becoming a Hiroaki Hirata fan.

Then I watched Saiyuki, and no surprise Gojyo quickly became my favorite character. I completely fell for him and after that I was hooked. I looked up Hiroaki Hirata and spent many hours researching anime he was involved in. I also found out he was the voice of Sanji in One Piece. A character I didn’t know much about, but who I had already dubbed my favorite in One Piece after seeing his design. Basically I already liked Sanji despite not really knowing anything about him, but after learning who voiced him I decided to look him up. And then I fell into the world of One Piece.

It was my love for Hiroaki Hirata that made me look up Sanji, and it was my interest in Sanji that got me into One Piece. Roughly a decade later I can’t even begin to describe how much I love this series and how many hours I’ve dedicated into thinking and talking about this wonderful manga and anime.

Sanji as a character surprised me by being really well-written and after all these years I’m still as intrigued by him as I was in the beginning, maybe even more as we learn more and more about him as a character. Hiroaki Hirata’s contribution to Sanji’s character and the way he protrays him is just one of many reasons to why I love Sanji, but in the end he is also why I got into One Piece to begin with.

Hirata’s ability to go from smooth and badass to silly and dorky is something I see a lot of and love in the characters he has voiced. I’ve also really come to admire the man himself who is actually very funny and seems to be pretty down to earth. I particularly love his relationship to Kazuya Nakai and his treatment of Nakai-kun who he seemingly teases a lot.

If you haven’t seen the video where he retells the story of how Nakai once farted when he was recording one of Zoro’s attacks you should!

I know this isn’t like my usual blog content, but I just wanted to express my gratitude and love for Hirata and also share with you some of my personal relationship to One Piece. I hope you all still enjoyed it.

So a happy birthday to Hiroaki Hirata! And let’s hope this year of Sanji gives him plenty of time to shine!

Just a reminder that this grumpy catcher

has the same voice actor for this sly smart ass

and this dork

Bless Yuuichi Nakamura
