Since 1986, Sundance Institute’s January Screenwriting Lab has followed the same unique formula: take a small group of screenwriters working on their first or second feature film; add Creative Advisors like Etgar Keret, Allison Anders, and Joan Tewkesbury; and for five days, let them hone their craft in an environment free from the pressures of industry or daily life. Alumni of the Lab include Cary Fukunaga (back when his hair was shorter!), Ryan Coogler, Miranda July, Benh Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar, Sydney Freeland, and Taika Waititi.
Despite its name, the one thing that’s strongly discouraged at the January Screenwriters Lab is writing–at least writing new pages of screenplay. Instead, the Lab’s one-on-one sessions between fellows and Creative Advisors encourage deep exploration of story, characters, and creative risk-taking.
Are you a screenwriter who’d like to take part? Applications for the 2016 January Screenwriters Lab are now open on Sundance Institute’s website.
