Ok I know, I’m 4 years late. But I know I’m not the only one. We all have these shows we’ve been wanting to watch for a while but for some reasons we never did.So here is one of mine, and it is definitely worth the try!
As you may or may not know, Bates Motel is centered around Norman Bates his psychotic tendencies and his almost incestuous relationship with his mom. A series of tragic events will bring them even closer together.
The story is based on the film Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock which was itself based on the novel of the same name by Robert Bloch.
What I found really touching in this prequel (if I may say), is the acting (the cast is really great) and especially Freddie Highmore’s, who plays Norman Bates. If you’re a millenial like me you may remember Freddie Highmore as this little boy from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Arthur and the Invisibles or even The Spiderwick Chronicles. Well let’s just say, his previous roles have nothing to do with the one of Norman Bates.
I love the way he is pictured. He really sounds sweet and caring, he acts like he is the perfect son he thinks he is but every time something troubles him, he turns cold, motionless and expressionless and his mind goes blank. At the beginning, only her mother knows his secret and we can see in Norman’s eyes and in his acting his confusion, his incomprehension, his anger. He makes us feel compationate and puzzled at the same time. I found his facial expressions and his performance in general very impressive. I discovered another side of Freddie Highmore as an actor but also as a screenwriter because he got to write one episode of the 4th season (”Unfaithful”).
I would give the series 4 stars out of 5. And if you ever wanna try it, don’t hesitate and go for it! I personnally watch it on Netflix but I’m pretty sure you can download it (legally of course (: ). For those who feel reluctant because they’re scared it’s too spooky for them, you barely see blood, it focuses on the psychotic dimensions rather than the damages.
