one reason I find Love, Simon so groundbreaking is because generally before this film, a gay movie was for the straights. it was made for the consumption and enjoyment of heterosexual people, it allowed straight girls to cry “Yaoi!” and talk about how much they sinned by shipping two guys. it allowed lesbians to be intimate for the consumption of men and bisexuals to be fetishised and trivialised by the media. Love, Simon is none of that. it’s an beautiful love story that just so happens to be gay, it isn’t the slightest bit sexual, it’s about kids in high school. for the first time it’s a movie about people like me made for people like me. and it’s about time.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

“I remember exactly how it felt to see that first message from him in my in-box. It was a little bit surreal. He wanted to know about me. For the next few days at school after that, it felt like I was a character in a movie. I could almost imagine a close-up of my face, projected wide-screen.

It’s strange, because in reality, I’m not the leading guy. Maybe I’m the best friend.

I guess I didn’t reall think of myself as interesting until I was interesting to Blue.”

Whenever I go and I’m choosing jobs, I think about what I’m actually saying with the job. What is the integrity of this project. And obviously, after reading the script [Love, Simon], the integrity was just through the roof. I mean it definitely felt like something I wanted to be a part of, not only because I think that we’re educating people, but also because I think we’re creating allies with movies like this.
