~ TOP 10 ALEX VAUSE FACES ~ Seasons 1 & 2 ~ part one
1. “Look at me” (1x12)
This one gets me Every. Single. Time.
The immense look of hurt on Alex’s face, the guilty look on Piper’s, and–-worse yet—her inability to deny what Alex (who *knows* Piper) has figured out makes this a very tough scene to rewatch. Masterfully acted by Laura….
2. “You broke my fucking heart” (1x03)
A crucial line in a crucial scene, and one that literally made me gasp the first time I heard it, because I had no inkling of Alex’s heartache. What we’d seen and heard up to this point was /all/ from Piper’s POV—-Piper’s misery, Piper’s “good life” stolen by the villanous Alex Vause, Piper being taken advantage of by someone who used her, etc etc. It’s only when Alex tells Piper of the emotional damage *she* did that Piper (and we, as the audience) start to see the whole truth.
3. “Please don’t leave. ” (1x11)
If this list is starting to look like the Alex Vause Parade of Pain, then you’re right. What’s sadder is that the line right after it (“Not now.”) is probably more heartbreaking. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — nobody does “upset” as well as Laura Prepon. Nobody.
4. “No, you don’t. ” (2x13)
I love the way Laura acts with her whole face. In this scene, you just have to look at her eyes to see Alex’s sadness, love and hopelessness. She also looks like she’d hardly slept before this visitation with Piper (probably from all the crying she did). And yet, to me, there is something positive to take from this sad scene, and that is that she and Piper never stopped loving each other. The devastating part is that the purpose of Alex’s visit was to say goodbye to Piper before she fled town forever. Vauseman, why do you do this to my little shipper heart???
5. Sexy Hallway Smirk (2x10)
Ok, some happy times now. The late great acting teacher Constantin Stanislavski said “Acting is reacting”, and Laura’s acting in this scene is a great example of that. The setup to the scene is Piper “accidentally” running into Alex at a bar after their first sex together (very rudely interrupted by GF Slyvie’s fist connecting with Piper’s face). Piper starts rambling about a burlesque show she claims she came to see, Alex apologizes for not being upfront about aforementioned GF, and then Piper makes a bold play for Alex, admitting that “(she’s) never felt….” like what she experienced with Alex that night. Alex is overjoyed to hear these words, and you can see by her smile that she is damned proud of her accomplishment. And those wonderfully expressive eyebrows….Watch how they quirk up in delight, partly at Piper’s adorable embarrassment and partly in, yes, surprise. And she never takes her eyes off Piper. That’s the effect they had (and still have) on each other.
6. “Me, too” (1x08)
What more can I say about this scene that hasn’t already been praised by others? Wonderful acting by both LP and TS, but that look Alex gives Piper after ever-so-gently taking her hand? It’s a mixture of love, hopefulness, and happiness (you can just see the shadow of a smile before it cuts away to Piper’s reaction), and it’s the look of someone who has waited eight years (eight years!) to touch the hand of the love of her life. Laura is the master of the nonverbal, and she positively nailed it here.
7. “You do?” (2X10)
Ok, that’s actually the line (spoken by Piper, after Alex tells her those Three Little Words) that precedes Alex’s reaction here. One of my favourite shots in seasons 1 & 2 is the one of Piper’s beaming face that closes this scene, but Alex’s shy smile here rivals it for what I call “feels-inducing power”. I love how Alex self-consciously rolls her body after Piper says “You do?”. We’re not used to seeing our favourite badass looking so vulnerable, and it is this vulnerability that makes the scene even more poignant. Just lovely acting by both LP and TS here. Why oh why can’t they stay happy like that forever???
8. Library Breakup (1x13)
I don’t even know what to call this expression from the library scene in the S1 ender…. but Laura’s acting is heartbreaking and so good that creator Jenji Kohan specifically mentioned it on the DVD commentary, saying “I love Laura here”. I agree wholeheartedly. The look she has on her face (esp. in those beautiful & oh-so-expressive eyes) as she tries to maintain her composure after hearing Piper’s devastating decision to choose a life with Larry….I think it would break even the hardest heart.
