Eastern Eyed Click Beetle (Alaus oculatus) I wish there was something in these photos to show scale. These beetles can range from 25 to 45 mm (1 to 1.8 inches.) From the August 2008 North Carolina photos I just stumbled upon.
Over the summer, I got really into entomology and I started collecting insects and researching. I found this guy on a dead tree in my backyard as I was getting out of my car. This insect is called the Eastern-Eyed Click Beetle (Scientific Name: Alaus oculatus). They got their name from the loud CLICKING noise when they flip themselves upright if they are on their backs
