“'No one is white before he/she came to America; it took generations and a vast amount of coercion before this became a white country'… What he is saying is that unless you live in a culture that recognizes such differences (skin color) as significant, they are socially irrelevant and therefore , in a way do not exist. A “black woman” in Africa, therefore, who has not experienced white racism does not THINK of herself as black, or experience herself as black, nor do the people around her.
