Once Upon a Time Season 7: Everything We Know So Far

By Matt Webb Mitovich
    • Once Upon a Time Season 7 will air in a new time slot — Fridays at 8/7c, where for eight weeks it will lead into Marvel’s Inhumans (and after that stretch, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). A premiere date has not yet been announced.
    • Original cast members Lana Parrilla and Robert Carlyle, as well as series vet Colin O’Donoghue, are set to return as series regulars.
    • Jennifer Morrison is not returning for Season 7, though she is contracted to appear in one episode (likely the season premiere).
    • Josh Dallas and Ginnifer Goodwin (who played Prince Charming and Snow White) will not be back…
  • WHO ELSE IS GONE? (cont’d)
    • …nor will Emilie de Ravin and Rebecca Mader return, as Belle and Zelena. And as for the kid who played Henry….
  • SON, SET
    • Since Season 6 ended with a “Years Later” time jump, Jared Gilmore will no longer be playing Henry Mills aka the Truest Believer.
    • With Henry now grown up (and the dad to a 10-year old daughter named Lucy!), Andrew J. West (The Walking Dead) is playing the role in Season 7.
    • As suggested by the Season 6 finale’s flash-forward to “a time of great upheaval” in the Enchanted Forest, Henry and Lucy will be safeguarding the storybook while trying to vanquish a great Darkness.
    • ABC’s initial synopsis for Season 7 said, “The residents of the Enchanted Forest face their greatest challenge yet as the Evil Queen, Captain Hook and Rumplestiltskin join forces with a grown up Henry Mills and his daughter Lucy on an epic quest to once again bring hope to their world and ours.”
    • Later during ABC’s Upfronts (pictured), entertainment chief Channing Dungey added that “Hook, the Evil Queen and Rumplestiltskin” will “return but with new identities in a new city, facing a new curse.” Raising new questions for fans!
    • “‘Who is Henry’s wife?’ and that love story is going to be a big part of next season,” series co-creator Eddy Kitsis told TVLine. The producers have, however, ruled out Violet (Henry’s teen crush) and pretty much nixed Disney heroine Moana.
    • With adult Henry now living in Seattle, the creators told TVLine that Storybrooke will no longer be the show’s “home base,” but may be glimpsed again at some point. “We won’t see the end of Storybrooke,” Kitsis said. “It just won’t be the focal point of the show.”
    • In addition to Parrilla, Carlyle, O’Donoghue, West and Fernandez, “more series regulars” — as well as some recurring characters — will be cast during the summer.
    • One thing that remains the same is the series’ primary thematic underpinning. “The idea of fairy tales in the real world, and the real world needing to have hope, is still very relevant and personal to us,” Kitsis told TVLine.
    • In addition to revisiting familiar denizens of the Enchanted Forest, “There are definitely some new fairy tale characters we’ve never done before,” Kitsis told TVLine. So when weaving fairy tale characters into upcoming stories, “It will be a hybrid.”
    • Akin to how the Season 6 finale both showed Henry/Lucy in the Enchanted Forest and then first meeting in Seattle, Once‘s dual narrative structure remains intact. “As has been the show’s modus operandi all along, there are different things going on all at once, all the time,” Horowitz told TVLine.
    • Though Season 7 — due to the aforementioned cast changes as well as its new narrative — won’t have the opportunity to chronicle Emma and Hook’s early days as newlyweds, the two “ended the season in love and in a beautiful place,” co-creator Adam Horowitz reminds viewers. “We really wanted to have that feeling that they had found each other and were going to go on together.”
The struggles of being a black fangirl

Queen Guinevere fans: Spent years defending Gwen from fans who said that a black woman being in a medieval fantasy show was unrealistic, despite the show featuring magic, wizards and dragons.

Martha Jones fans: Dealt with continual racists and sexist attacks from Rose Tyler fans who felt that Martha was trying to replace Rose.

Bonnie Bennett fans: Dealt with years of racist attacks and Delena fans demanding that the writers kill off her character, despite her playing a major role in the books.

Iris West fans: Constantly fighting against people who want Iris to be written out of the show or killed off, despite her being the female lead and the wife and mother of Barry Allen’s children in the comics.

Michonne fans: Constantly defending Michonne from fans who openly refer to her as unattractive and not a proper love interest for Rick Grimes (aka not white)

Abbie Mills fans: Spent the last 3 years fighting for Abbie to stop being sidelined and disrespected by the writers, only for the writers to kill her off and turn her into a sacrificial negro.

Finn fans: Constantly dealing with Reylo fans arguing that Finn is not a proper love interest for Rey, but somehow, a genocidal father-killing maniac, who also made a not-so-veiled rape threat to her, magically is.

T’Challa fans: Currently dealing with Bucky and Natasha fans who are pushing for them to play a major role in the new Black Panther movie. Oh, and let us not forget the Natasha/T’Challa shippers who are actively advocating for Nat to become the new queen of Wakanda. Because having a white Russian assassin who used to work for Hydra being the queen of an African nation isn’t creepy or racist. Nope, not at all.

  • Clorinda: Regina?
  • Regina: Oh good. You're still here. You haven't gone to Rumplestiltskin yet.
  • Clorinda: What? Why would I have gone to see him?
  • Regina: Look, I get it. You trusted her to keep a secret and your mom ruined your life because she didn't want you to marry beneath you. I've been there. But dedicating the rest of your life to revenge isn't the answer.
  • Clorinda: I'm not doing that. I have a wedding to plan.
  • Regina: But you blame her don't you? You blame Ashley for ruining your happy ever after while she got hers.
  • Clorinda: No. I blame my mother. Ella was just trying to help. We cleared everything up.
  • Regina: You're not gonna try and curse her?
  • Clorinda: No!
  • Regina: Not even a little?
  • Clorinda: She's going to be in the wedding party.
  • Regina: Huh. Well I guess my work here is done. You're welcome.
  • Clorinda: I feel like I'm missing a lot of context for this conversation.
This “Once Upon a Time” actress may show off her rap skills

The moment we’ve all been waiting for is almost here: The Once Upon a Time musical episode. And, for it, this Once Upon A Time actress may rap, reported Entertainment Weekly. Yup, Lana Parrilla wants to show off her rap skills.

“I’m hoping to rap,” Parrilla (aka Regina Mills) told EW before the musical episode was filmed. “That’s just the Brooklyn girl in me that wants to rap. I just pitched that idea. I haven’t gotten a response. I am hoping to rap, but it’s highly unlikely.”

Okay, in a show with so many magical elements, we don’t think ~anything’s~ unlikely. And we would LOVE to see The Evil Queen rap. Who’s with us?!

Even though the May 7th musical episode will have most of the cast singing, that doesn’t mean singing comes naturally to them IRL.

“I think I did a musical once in my life when I was 19 years old, so I’m definitely rusty,” Parrilla told EW. “…I think the whole idea of all of us doing something different is exciting too, and we’ve been singing on set, and in between takes, and kind of warming our voices up, but also I think really just gearing up for this really fun episode that we are about to do.”

“Really fun” is an understatement. Personally, we can’t wait for Storybrooke to break into song.

As for the musical episode’s details, we know Emma and Hook are getting married, as EW reported. Fittingly, the ep is called “The Song in Your Heart.”

In addition to Regina, many other OUAT characters will be singing, too, including Emma (Jennifer Morrison), Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), Charming (Josh Dallas), Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin), Zelena (Rebecca Mader), Henry (Jared Gilmore), Granny (Beverley Elliott), Grumpy (Lee Arenberg), Geppetto (Tony Amendola), and more, reported EW. ” The episode will feature seven original songs from Alan Zachary, Michael Weiner, and OUAT composer Mark Isham.

Again: WE. CAN’T. WAIT!

Of course, the show airs on Sundays at 8 p.m./ET on ABC. Meanwhile, we’ll be counting down the weeks till May 7th.
