From Saturday night in Ithaca~ Thank you to Buffalo Street Books & Saltonstall & Lesley Williamson & Eric Berlin for sharing his beautiful poems & R.A. Villanueva for introducing me with the word “oxygenate” & Christine Kitano for bringing her super enthusiastic students & everyone who came thank you.
/cute story time/
After the reading, an Ithaca College student (from Christine Kitano’s class) came up to me to get a book signed and told me that he’d been reading Walt Whitman and also my book and that “I definitely prefer your book. So much better than Song of Myself!” I was so flabbergasted I didn’t know what to say, except a flabbergasted “Thank you?”
Now I can’t help but think of Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s found poem,
comprised of lines from student emails about reading her work. If I remember correctly, a similar moment of absurd comparison occurred—and with Whitman. Poor Walt. But yeah, it was a beautifully ridiculous moment. Thank you for making me feel like a rock star.
