Tsuetate is an onsen or hot springs resort in Kumamoto prefecture in Kyushu. Built very densely on the steep banks of river Tsuetate, the alleys and streets of the town feel like internal spaces. Seemingly random and creative assemblies of pipes and various obscure pieces of infrastructure distribute the natural hot spring water from the surrounding mountains to the many ryokans in the town.

Hearst Tower is built on top of the remnants of a gutted Art Deco building commissioned by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s to function as the base of an eventual skyscraper.
The triangulated frame uses 20% less steel compared to an ordinary structure, and gives the building a distinctive volume.
