This Target First Saturday, come hear the sounds of the Afrofuture!
The night begins with a performance by Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber celebrating the music of Sun Ra. The music continues with Daví, who curated our latest Spotify playlist “Afrofuturism”, featuring songs from Janet Jackson, Prince, Erykah Badu, OutKast, Frank Ocean, and others.
Listen here. More about his playlist in his own words:
Afrofuturism as a concept for me, speaks to the imagination of future in works by people of African descent, often involving science, technology, love, freedom and metaphysics. This a compilation of certain artists who either through their approach to musicality, their lyricism and/or painted musical landscape speak to that imagination of future in their song. Musical afrofuturists have never looked one way (may they never) however the tapestry they have woven allows us to view life and the universe in exponentially brighter ways; their messages are the nutrients for a better day
As you continue your journey from Ancient Egypt to the Afrofuture with our conversations, films, and gallery tours on December 2nd, make sure to stick around for performances by DJ moMa and Jade de LaFleur of Everyday People at 8 pm.
