Well, recent research suggests that the phenotype (physical attribute) and genotype (genetic attribute) for light colored eyes actually originates in Central Asia.

The color moved westwards with the large migrations streams of people from east to west. Out of the Middle East, however, more people migrated directly to Southern Europe, therefore there’s a greater number of dark eyed people in Southern Europe compared to Northern Europe.
