advocate for anti bullying

October may be National Bullying Prevention Month, but for Lizzie Velásquez, combating bullying and empowering others is an everyday way of life. As a teenager, the 26 year-old author and motivational speaker was called “The World’s Ugliest Woman” in a YouTube video. Brutal comments left on the clip suggested that the world would be a better place without her, even going so far as to suggest methods for committing suicide.

Though she was initially devastated by reactions to the video, Velásquez took this as an opportunity to help others by telling her story. She suffers from an incredibly rare congenital disease that leaves her incapable of gaining weight. She is blind in her right eye - with limited vision in the other - and has a weak immune system.

Beyond speaking engagements, writing three books and appearing in the 2015 documentary A Brave Heart, Velásquez has advocated for anti-bullying legislation to be put in place, traveling to Washington to speak with lawmakers and convince them to push a long-delayed bill through.

So there are some things I need to get off my plate. The tabloids are having a field day because of something she wore accidentally slipping at the wrong moment, and photographers with no decency, snapping away and showing something meant to be private. I just wanted to say that my heart aches for her. It honestly does. This woman has worked her entire life to create a certain image for herself. Anyone who has ever seen her will probably immediately proclaim something about her appearance; that’s just the way it is. I understand she has remarkable genes and she’s in the spotlight but what I strongly dislike is that despite the fact that she has worked her ass off to prove she’s more than her appearance (i.e. working since she was 14 until she raised about $20,000 so she could move to Hollywood at 18 without anyone’s help, rejecting huge offers to work for celebrities because she didn’t want to be perceived as a dancer, accepting jobs that have worked her to the bone and declining nudity in films up until recently) she is being portrayed in the media as the girl who had a wardrobe malfunction. Disregard the fact that she filmed about five movies last year, when in the past she was voted least likely to be successful after Glee. Disregard the fact that she has questioned authority figures about the reasons behind their actions instead of blindly following their lead. Disregard the fact that she regularly advocates for anti-bullying and lgbtq rights. Disregard the fact that she just released a half hour interview where she gave brilliant acting and professional advice. Disregard the fact that she even stated in the video that she’s only comfortable with nudity if it’s done in good spirit or furthers a character’s storyline. Disregard the fact that she won’t wear a bikini in public. Disregard the fact that she has said that even though she herself enjoys covering up, it doesn’t mean she expects the same of other women. She has discussed female empowerment time and time again and it’s disappointing to me that it’s falling by the wayside. Honestly, the media committed a crime against this woman. You may say by discussing this, I’m making a unnecessarily big deal out of it but guess what? There’s thirty articles that are unabashedly showing off something that should only be seen when shown willingly. As they say, “We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.” She’s on the precipice of having a huge film career and the tabloids have decided to comment on a loose article of clothing instead. The exact thing she has been avoiding since day one. Please remember she is more than a picture. She is more than her body.

Gavin Macintosh is a little bitch who only cares about himself. He's one of those people who are selfish and ugly.

Let me edumacate you a little about Gavin Powers MacIntosh.

Did you know that he’s a strong advocate for anti-bullying? He, along with Hayden Byerly even started a campaign against bullying.

How many other 16 year old’s do you know of that stand up against bullying? HUH?! Please tell me.

Lets move on to the next reason why Gavin isn’t selfish or a “bitch”

Do you know how much he had done for the LGBT+ community? Lets see

Yes this is the youngest same sex kiss in U.S Television history. Let me remind you that both Gavin Macintosh and Hayden Byerly are both straight young teens, who have girlfriends, and for them to have done this is absolutely AMAZING. They only want to help people, who go through this everyday, deal with all the negatives and that is exactly what they do with their roles on The Fosters. They show and support that it is okay to question your sexuality, and you are not doing anything wrong by doing that.

Here is a little more about why Gavin is so inspirational and very admirable person:

Not only was he willing to be a part of and share in the groundbreaking youngest same sex kiss, but he’s PROUD of that because it helps so many people.

A while back Youtube had made an age restriction on video of the ground breaking jonnor kiss by a third party. This was his response:

Let me remind you that Gavin DID NOT have to say anything. He could have just ignored it, but he stood up for what he believed in and this was the result:

By standing up for what he believed in, Youtube took off the age restriction, I bet you didn’t know that either.

Lets move on. On June 13, 2015 Gavin, along with Hayden, attended LA Pride, where he took photos with a lot of fans and was happy to be there because it truly made a difference:

Not only was Gavin happy to attend this event BUT he also wants more events like this because he knows it positively impacts the lives of so many people.

Along with all the other INCREDIBLE things that he has/is done/doing, he also took part of the NOH8 campaign:

Gavin is such a POWERFUL believer of being true to yourself and he PROVES that over and over again. Along with all these roles, Gavin still spends time with his family, friends and girlfriend as well as does school work and soccer.

He is also so wonderful to us, his fans. He does not have to interact with us, but he does and he is happy doing it. Even with the fans who think ignorantly of him:

This just shows how much he loves his fans, and how much we mean to him. He is truly a INSPIRATIONAL person and I know a lot of people, along with me, admire him greatly. Theres not a lot of young people out there that are this mature and great out there, so please do not insult someone who has done nothing to you because he has/is helped/helping change the world for the better. This is just a little taste of what kind of person he is and what he has done for the betterment of society. Imagine the things he will go on to do.

Please do not sit there and tell me that Gavin is selfish or a bitch because that is so far from the truth that the size of the universe cannot even compare. He is a pretty ASTOUNDING young man who does not deserve the hate people like you give him.

As for calling him ugly…

Consider yourself educated! Don’t EVER come to my ask box with that kind of hate ever again. Thank you! Have a lovely day.

austin is literally the biggest disappointment this season

I went on Victoria justice’s post and I couldn’t believe what I saw!

This is the last thing I’d expect to see on a tribute post about Christina grimmie. Especially on Victoria justice’s Instagram post that poured her heart out in this wonderful tribute.

This is beyond reprehensible. The fact hat this alexanderpantherr person would say this on Victoria justice’s about post about Christina grimmie is not only disrespectful to Victoria justice (who wrote a beautiful homage and post about Christina) but to Christina herself.

This person is shameful he’s disgusting and he shouldn’t be ashamed for his actions especially considering that Christina Grimmie was an anti bully advocate. But to do this on Victoria Justice’s tribute post towards Christina is absolutely sick and vile!

Shame on this person for saying such things on Victoria’s instagram post. Absolutely deplorable!😡

in 2011 people on tumblr were advocating for suicide awareness and anti bullying and now some people actually think it’s ok to tell people to die. we have come full circle

The Most Inspiring Women Of 2016 (So Far)

Old and young, black and white, mothers and daughters, doctors and dancers - it is a truth universally acknowledged that women are awesome.

Well, unfortunately it’s not all that acknowledged hence the need for International Women’s Day - a chance to celebrate incredible women from all walks of life who inspire and astound the rest of the world.

Anyone you think we’ve missed? Tweet us at @YahooStyleUK

Words: Sophie Tighe

We’ve picked just some of the amazing women who have already used 2016 to smash glass ceilings, subvert beauty standards and stand up for their fellow ladies.

1. Victoria Pendleton

Not content with winning three Olympic medals, Victoria Pendleton has got herself a new job. The former cyclist has swapped two wheels for four legs and has become a jockey. Just a year after the 35-year-old took up the sport, she’s due to ride in the Cheltenham Gold Cup next weekend.

2. Lady Gaga

Gaga has never been one to shy away from a worthy cause, as an outspoken advocate for the LGBT community or founding her Born This Way anti-bullying foundation to empower young people. In 2016, the 29-year-old turned her attention to the plight of rape victims. Gaga wrote the lead song ‘Til It Happens To You’ for ‘The Hunting Ground’ - a documentary investigating the alarming number of female students who are raped while at university in the US. The song was nominated for an Oscar and Gaga’s powerful performance on the night featured dozens of abuse victims joining her on stage as the audience at home were asked to join the pledge to keep women (and men) safe from sexual assault.

3. Hillary Clinton

As Donald Trump somehow manages to cling on to his Presidential campaign, all of America’s hopes for a toupee-free White House rest on one woman’s shoulders. 2016 should be Hillary’s year. The 65-year-old is the front-running Democratic nominee for President, despite strong grassroots support for her rival Bernie Sanders. In an ideal world, Hillary will get the nomination and ask democratic socialist Bernie to run as her VP. And Trump will go back to The Apprentice where he belongs.

4. Arundhati Roy

As well as winning the Man Booker Prize in 1997 for her best-selling novel, ‘The God of Small Things’, Indian author Arundhati Roy is a long-time political activist. Since her win, the 54-year-old has used her fame to highlight environmental and human rights issues. Roy is currently facing criminal charges for contempt of court in her home country over an article she wrote at the end of last year criticising the imprisonment of a severely disabled lecturer who was accused of “anti-national activities”. These charges against Roy are the latest step in what some are calling “the suppression of intellectual and creative freedoms” that is quietly happening in India.

5. Amber Rose

Amber Rose refuses to be defined by the men in her life. The 32-year-old model has used the fame she gained from dating musicians to highlight the grossly unfair double standards of sexuality that see women branded as ‘whores’ for behaviour that would get a man a pat on the back. Rose’s Slutwalk was a public protest over oppressive societal norms that tie women’s clothing to their likeliness to be sexually assaulted. Last month, Amber was slut-shamed by Tyrese Gibson and Reverend Run who espoused the antiquated view that a woman dressing a certain way is asking to be raped but Amber shut them down immediately: “If I’m laying down with a man butt-naked and his condom is on, and I say, ‘You know what? No. I don’t wanna do this. I changed my mind’ that means no. That means f**k no. It doesn’t matter how far I take it or what I have on, when I say no, it means no.” #slay.

6. Beyoncé

Over her nearly 20 year career, Beyoncé has often been criticized for not adequately acknowledging her black heritage - from her bleach blonde Rapunzel weave to her relative silence over numerous issues facing the African-American community. That was until ‘Formation’. The star of her latest musical video is undoubtedly the black woman. From her ladies getting in formation to Queen Bey herself, the highly politicized video has clear nods to the black victims of Hurricane Katrina as well as the Black Lives Matter cultural movement. Sceptics argue that Mrs Knowles-Carter image is so controlled that it’s hard to see any real integrity in this one music video. But her performance at the Super Bowl complete with Black Panther-esque outfits and a not-so-subtle allusion to civil rights pioneer Malcolm X left no-one in any doubt over Beyoncé’s stance on the state of African-American rights in the US in 2016.

7. Jenny Beavan

Few people outside the film industry knew who Jenny Beavan was until Stephen Fry called her “an old bag lady” at this year’s BAFTAs. For the record, Beavan is a multi-award winning costume designer who created the wardrobes for movies including Sense and Sensibility and Mad Max: Fury Road. Beavan won her second Oscar in 2016 for Mad Max and accepted her award wearing a studded leather jacket, stating: “The only thing I would like is for my outfit to have a positive effect on what women feel about themselves. You don’t actually have to look like a supermodel to be successful.”

8. Harnaam Kaur

When 16-year-old Harnaam Kaur decided to stop shaving her beard, she probably didn’t realise that she would become the face of a new kind of beauty. Last year Kaur joined the #effyourbeautystandards movement, opening up about the polycystic ovarian syndrome that leads to her excess hair growth. This year, the British beauty made history when she walked the runway at the Royal Fashion Day for jewelry designer Marianna Haratunian. Kaur posted this pic on Instagram: “I grew up being told i was too fat, ugly, and disgusting to even model. I was told i’d never walk the runway. Jokes on my bullies.”

9. Kesha

Kesha’s very public battle to escape a record deal that would see her forced to work with the man she claimed sexually assaulted her has been at the forefront of music news in 2016. The 28-year-old bravely took her case to court to seek an injunction with her record label Sony against working with producer Dr. Luke, whom she says repeatedly drugged, sexually assaulted and verbally abused her. Since her initial request was denied, numerous celebrities have come out in support of the singer including Adele, Lady Gaga, Lorde, Demi Lovato and Lena Dunham.

10. Tsai Ing-wen

In January 2016, Taiwan elected their first female president - Tsai Ing-wen. The LSE educated politician won in a landslide victory that marks a new era for the self-governing country as her Democratic Progressive Party come into power in May, which won’t sit well with the current Communist leaders in nearby China.

11. The Coxless Crew

In January 2016, these four women were the first all-female team to successfully cross the Pacific Ocean. After spending 257 days at sea, The Coxless Crew docked in Cairns, Australia on January 25 looking rather pleased with themselves after setting off from San Francisco nine months earlier. Makes our biannual trip to the gym look rather feeble.
