One of the best known aviators of the 20th Century, Amelia Earhart won her fame after becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Her flights exhibited how far aviation had come since it’s developmental years, and she was also an established author, her books detailing her many journeys. Earhart disappeared during a flight over the South Pacific Ocean in 1937 and was officially declared dead in 1939. Many believe she crashed and sunk in her plane, but some evidence suggests that she and her companion Fred Noonan found the uninhabited Gardner Island. However, this has never been confirmed officially, and her death still remains a mystery.
