If you watch “Asylum Of The Daleks” and “The Snowmen” after “The Name Of The Doctor” the story of the echoes and their relationship with The Doctor is pretty fucking sad. You then know why they’re both yearning to protect this man they don’t even know. You know why they like to bake soufflés and the emotional loss the soufflés actually represent. You know the reason they want to escape and travel into the universe so badly is because they had already seen what was out there and loved every second of it. You know that their deaths actually mean that a little piece of the real Clara just died and somewhere in the universe she’s that much less whole because of it. But the one that gets me the most is that you know very well why Clara Oswin cries when he gives her the key even though she doesn’t fully understand it. It’s because in the depths of her psyche she’s reacting to the fact that after thousands of years and thousands, maybe millions of echoes he finally saw her, appreciated her, cared for her, and more importantly wanted her to go away with him. Where Oswin had to ask for the Doctor to take her to the stars, he very literally and willingly walked Clara Oswin up to that cloud and served her the stars on a silver platter.
