This year’s N.O.W. Special Screenings at Tribeca 2017 feature AWAKE, A Dream From Standing Rock, executive produced by Shailene Woodley.

The film captures the story of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s peaceful resistance against the North Dakota Pipeline that captured the world’s attention and changed the fight for clean water and the future of the planet.

A live discussion with filmmakers Josh Fox and James Spione (both Tribeca alums and Oscar nominees), along with their co-director Myron Dewey, follows the screening.

#SaveTheEPA and #FirePruitt

Scott Pruitt spent most of his career obstructing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Now this guy leads the EPA and is destroying decades of environmental standards. Makes no sense. He is denying what scientists have proved to be real time and time again—Climate Change. I collected a few articles if you have the time to read through them. Talk about it amongst friends and expose him.

Gay America: Sex, Politics and The Impact of AIDS

Bobbi Campbell, left, originally from Seattle, became the first person living with AIDS to come out publicly after he became the 16th person to be diagnosed in San Francisco with the still unnamed disease. He co-authored a safer-sex manual called “Play Fair,” and died in 1984.

OAXACA, MEXICO

Federal police and military force is massacring activists and professors who were protesting against the laboral/educative reform. I repeat, they’re massacring them. They’re are killing them and burning them outside Nochixtlán.

On another news, right now in the main plaza, the center of Oaxaca, federal police have cut the lights to make “cleaning” which means dragging and killing all the protesters they can. Ambulances and military jeeps were advising people for NOT helping the protesters or take refugees, or they will be “cleaned” too.

6 protesters were confirmed killed due to the use of large weapons by the police. More protesters are disappeared and some are confirmed (just by the survivors) death or burned. In Hacienda Blanca they were killed too.

Also, hospitals, doctors and medicine students aren’t allowed to help or receive the protester, all of this are orders coming from president Enrique Peña Nieto, and the public education secretary Aurelio Nuño Mayer.

Revealed: FBI terrorism taskforce investigating Standing Rock activists
FBI representatives have contacted several ‘water protectors’, raising alarm that an indigenous-led movement is being construed as domestic terrorism
By Sam Levin

The FBI is investigating political activists campaigning against the Dakota Access pipeline, diverting agents charged with preventing terrorist attacks to instead focus their attention on indigenous activists and environmentalists.

The Guardian has established that multiple officers within the FBI’s joint terrorism taskforce have attempted to contact at least three people tied to the Standing Rock “water protector” movement in North Dakota.

The purpose of the officers’ inquiries into Standing Rock, and scope of the task force’s work, remains unknown. Agency officials declined to comment. But the fact that the officers have even tried to communicate with activists is alarming to free-speech experts who argue that anti-terrorism agents have no business scrutinizing protesters.

“The idea that the government would attempt to construe this indigenous-led non-violent movement into some kind of domestic terrorism investigation is unfathomable to me,” said Lauren Regan, a civil rights attorney who has provided legal support to demonstrators who were contacted by representatives of the FBI. “It’s outrageous, it’s unwarranted … and it’s unconstitutional.”

Regan, who has regularly visited Standing Rock and is the executive director of the Civil Liberties Defense Center in Oregon, said she learned of three cases in which officers with the taskforce, known as the JTTF, tried to talk to activists in person. She described the encounters as attempted “knocks and talks”, meaning law enforcement showed up at people’s doors without a subpoena or warrant and tried to get them to voluntarily cooperate with an interview.

The three individuals, who include a Native American and a non-indigenous activist, asserted their fifth amendment rights and did not respond to the officers, according to Regan, who declined to identify them to protect their privacy and out of fear of retribution… READ MORE

Winter has descended on North Dakota. A blizzard swept through the state earlier this week, shutting down nearly 300 miles of interstate highway there. And the weather doesn’t promise to relent in the coming months.

In the midst of it all, a large group of protesters remains at the temporary camps on the northern edge of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.

The movement, which started in early 2016, had small roots but grew into the thousands, drawing support from Native Americans from across the country, as well as activists who joined in solidarity against the proposed route of the 1,172-mile Dakota Access Pipeline just north of the reservation.

Last week those protests won a concession from the federal government: The Army Corps of Engineers announced it would deny the permit necessary to build the oil pipeline in that area. And now, with an eye toward the impending winter weather, the chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in North Dakota is asking people camping near the route to go home.

Still, many “water protectors” have vowed to hold their ground.

Here are some of their own stories, their experiences at the camp and their reasons for joining the protest — in their own words.

In Their Own Words: The ‘Water Protectors’ Of Standing Rock

I’m laughing because well knowed newspapers and news networks used the terms “bloggers”, “activists”, “social justice warriors” more often to de-legitimate them, meanwhile they informed me about:

  • Ferguson
  • Syrian Refugees
  • chinese activists disappereance
  • Orlando
  • Aleppo
  • Ni una Menos
  • Poland women’s right march
  • Flint
  • Philippines’ president Duterte
  • Standing Rock protest
  • and Boko Haram nigerian massacre

faster and better (and sometimes were the only ones), and with more accurancy and proofs that said newspapers and news networks did.

So how about, instead, @well knowed newspapers and news networks, you examine yourself, your ethic, your morals, the present and your work, and start doing what should be YOUR  FRICKING JOB?!?

During the winter months we get a lot of Doves, Pigeons, Rats and other less glamorous wildlife brought into our wildlife hospital. During a talk today, Simon was asked why bother saving pigeons, there are so many of them?

The answer to that is simple, we are simply just one animal within a very complex food chain, if one of the links breaks, then we, the apex predator at the top of the food chain will be the ones to suffer most. Every fly, bee, maggot, rat, pigeon (the list goes on) is vital for maintaining the balance of nature.

Almost all of the animals admitted into Wildlife Aid are sick, injured or orphaned due to human interference in one way or another, so all our work goes towards putting right the wrongs mankind around us are doing to our wildlife. So perhaps there are too many pigeons, or Doves like this one we admitted today in the photo, but if human’s have caused an animal to suffer, we at Wildlife Aid are determined to end that suffering and give the animal a second chance at life.

No matter how unglamorous or unpopular an animal is, it will always serve a purpose in this very fragile food chain below us.

In that food chain…..EVERY LIFE COUNTS.

The lines were stark outside the courthouse.

A bustling street in downtown Brooklyn, N.Y., separated two groups. Each was fenced in by stone-faced police officers and steel barricades: an Asian-American community divided by Tuesday’s sentencing of 28-year-old Peter Liang, the son of Chinese immigrants.

On one side, a group of mainly Chinese-American protesters held up poster boards declaring “Racist Prosecution!” and “Peter Liang Deserves Justice too!” in black marker.

On the other, a racially-mixed group of activists that included Asian-Americans lifted “Black Lives Matter” signs, both in English and Chinese.

Evil Gays

This morning began with an unfortunate choice. In my bleary eyed state, I chose a treadmill at the gym right in front of the Fox News tv. For the next half hour, I witnessed a Christian televangelist program that consisted of two guys who looked like bank presidents sitting in front of a fireplace talking about the good book. Or at least that was the premise since they both had a bible in front of them, although they never cracked it open. Instead, they focused on today’s theme, which was how Christians in the US are being victimized by gay activists. They said they would never tell people how to vote, and then they spent the next half hour telling us that if we don’t vote republican, the evil gays will take over our government and corrupt everyone’s children. There was an awkward transition to a few minutes of lies about Planned Parenthood, and then they concluded with a plea for all of the faithful to send them as much money as they possibly could. I thought about moving to another treadmill several times during this production, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of the train wreck unfolding before me. And on the plus side, I don’t think I have ever run faster in my life! So begins another day - now I’m off to make a list of children to corrupt and plot the overthrow of our government.

If you were to witness a bias-based attack or a hate crime, how would you respond?

It’s something some activists are preparing some New Yorkers to be ready for, as reports of hate crimes in the city have increased since the election of Donald Trump. They are up 63 percent compared to the same period last year as of Dec. 14, according to the New York City Police Department.

Earlier this month, a man allegedly threatened to cut the throat of an off-duty police officer wearing a hijab. Two days later, a transit worker wearing a hijab was allegedly pushed down the stairs in Grand Central Terminal by a man who called her a “terrorist.”

Christen Brandt, a trainer with the Center for Anti-Violence Education, wants more bystanders who witness attacks and hate crimes to become what she calls “upstanders” — people who will intervene rather than just walk away.
