M3A1 “Grease Gun” submachine gun

Designed by George Hyde c.1942 and manufactured by Guide Lamp - General Motors - c.1943~50′s.
.45ACP 30-round magazine, open bolt blowback full automatic, stamped sheet metal construction, hinged bolt dust cover.

Designed to replace the Thompson submachine guns as a cheaper alternative, it failed to enter a big enough production rate to achieve that. It still remained in service until the 1990′s as a vehicle crew weapon.

Physiology of Ageing - Muscles
  • Loss of lean body mass
  • Infiltration of fat and connective tissue
  • Altered muscle metabolism
  • Insulin resistance
  • Reduced levels of key regulatory hormones
  • Impaired oxidative defence
  • Muscle strength peaks at approx. 20-40 years
  • Strength dictated by muscle cross-sectional area
  • Age-associated decline in concentric strength (leg > arm
  • Decline in concentric strength occurs earlier than decline in eccentric strength
  • Power generation ability declines faster than max. strength

= loss of muscle mass (and strength) due to ageing

  • Two phases:
  • ‘slow’ from 25 to 50 years (approx. 10% lost)
  •  ‘rapid’ from 50 onwards (approx. 40% lost from 50-80)
  • Deterioration in motor unit remodelling
  • Reduced cross-sectional area and functionality
  • Disuse atrophy (ageing is associated with becoming more sedentary(not as active)) may contribute to changes
  • Reduced regenerative capacity
  • Stem cell function affected by circulating factors?
  • ‘Systemic inflammation’ theory of ageing?
  • Increased apoptosis
  • Anabolic resistance
  • Protein degradation (muscle & nerve)

Motor Unit

  • Entire motor unit affected:
  • Alpha-motorneuron
  • Fibres innervated
  • Shift to predominance of slow-twitch fibres

Force transfer

  • Network of cytoskeletal proteins align and transmit force produced by actin and myosin along muscle fibres and out to extracellular matrix
  •  E.g. Costameres = sub-sarcolemmal proteins that connect sarcomere to cell membrane
  • Found in Z and M lines
  • Transmit force laterally
  • Significant decrease in costameres and lateral force in ageing

Muscle protein metabolism in ageing

  • Basal muscle protein synthesis unchanged
  • Protein/amino acid feeding leads to increase in muscle protein synthesis in both groups
  • BUT, response is smaller in the elderly
  • Resistance exercise leads to increase in muscle protein synthesis AND breakdown
  • BUT, synthesis rates lower in the elderly
  • Food + exercise needed for anabolic response
  • Response delayed in elderly, but can achieve similar rates

Metabolic Capacity

  • Decrease in Mitochondria
  • Decrease in capillary density
  • Reduced ability of muscle to extract O2 from blood
  • Decrease in enzymes for metabolic pathways
  • Reduced speed of O2 utilisation
  • Therefore ↓ (a-v)O2 diff (and ↓VO2max)

  • Decline in muscle mass and oxidative capacity, plus increased fat mass leads to greater risk of developing:
  • insulin resistance and/or type II diabetes
  • hyperlipidaemia
  • hypertension
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Reduced bone mass contributes to loss of functional capacity and risk of injury
Shondaland Shocker! Shonda Rhimes Jumps ABC Ship to Netflix | EW

Shonda Rhimes is moving Shondaland to Netflix.

The prolific executive producer of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder will leave the network that made her a household name to join Netflix, EW has confirmed. Rhimes has signed a multi-year deal to produce new series and other projects for the streamer, alongside longtime producing partner Betsy Beers, who will also move to Netflix.

“Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television,” said Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos. “Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I’ve gotten the chance to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart — she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We’re so excited to welcome her to Netflix.”

Rhimes added: “Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company. Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. He understood what I was looking for — the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation. The future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities.”

The move marks a split from ABC, where Rhimes launched her television career with Grey’s Anatomy. What does this mean for your favorite Shondaland series? The three current Rhimes shows — Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder — as well as midseason legal entry For the People and the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy spin-off will all still air on ABC. ABC Studios also has a pilot from The Catch and Wonder Woman‘s Allan Heinberg, which will stick with the studio.

“Our current shows will continue to thrive on ABC and Shondaland will be there every step of the way,” Rhimes also said in her statement. “I could not have asked for a better home to begin my career. I continue to be grateful to work with so many talented people – especially our studio gladiator Patrick Moran and our most powerful and brilliant champion Channing Dungey. Starting today, we are thrilled to begin creating new Shondaland stories with Netflix. Everyone at Shondaland is honored to expand both our audience and our creative identity with Ted and the entire team at Netflix.”

Rhimes’ legacy will continue on with ABC Studios, which also has a number of overall deals with many of the showrunners attached to the aforementioned Shondaland shows, meaning they will stay on with the shows and any development in the future will also stay with ABC Studios. The list includes Pete Nowalk from How to Get Away with Murder, Krista Vernoff for Grey’s Anatomy, Stacy McKee for the Grey’s spin-off, Don Todd and Paul William Davies from For the People, Mark Fish for Scandal, Mark Wilding for the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, and Bill Harper for Grey’s Anatomy.

“We’re so proud of the work we’ve done with Shonda and Betsy throughout our long and productive relationship,” said Patrick Moran, president of ABC Studios. “From the worldwide success of Grey’s Anatomy to today, with five series (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, For the People, and the Grey’s spin-off), a pilot from Allan Heinberg and a number of projects in development, we will continue to shepherd that success together. The Shondaland imprint will always be an important part of ABC Studios and we wish them all the best in this new endeavor.”

Added ABC President Channing Dungey: “Shonda, Betsy and I started working together with the first episode of Grey’s Anatomy and those early days will forever remain one of the highlights of my professional life. We are happy to continue working with Shonda and her team at Shondaland on Grey’s, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and the upcoming For the People and Grey’s spin-off. I’m proud to have given a home to what have become some of the most celebrated and talked about shows on television. With the launch of a new season upon us, fans can rest assured that TGIT remains intact and will be as buzzed about as ever.”

Rhimes’ departure will be a huge loss for ABC. The hitmaker singlehandedly boosted the network’s female demographic while helping the network survive the loss of Desperate Housewives by creating new zeitgeisty characters like Derek and Meredith, Olivia Pope, and Annalise Keating. Though Scandal and HTGAWM never achieved the ratings dominance enjoyed by Grey’s, they brought film stars and Emmy cred to the network, not to mention a whole programming block that was marketed as TGIT.

TGIT will return to ABC with a two-hour premiere of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. PT, followed by How to Get Away with Murder at 10 p.m. ET. The final season of Scandal will bow Thursday, Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

Who wrote the RollerCoaster Tycoon game manual??

The public has a short memory. Even a colossal tragedy in which hundreds of guests are sent to their reward will, eventually, be forgotten.  […] If it makes you feel any better, you can rename the ride.

You might decide that a giant pit in the ground fits the atmosphere you’re creating in your park.

The excitement factor of each ride is rated on a scale from 0 (the epitome of tedium) to 10 (knocks your socks clean off)

You can achieve intensity ratings over 10 through misguided design decisions, but don’t be surprised when no one is willing to ride it, even for free!

Within, there are seven tabs — and thus seven displays — filled with data of substance and utility

This is a tier list that’s been made for the playable characters in Fire Emblem Heroes as of February 5th, 2017 (02.05.17) / (05.02.17 for those in Europe and other countries.)

From my understanding, the criteria for the rating of each class was made around each character’s growth rates and overall usefulness in the game’s main campaign. Only characters that can achieve five stars were rated, having been analyzed at their maximum potential.

I myself don’t have access to every unit (yet) so I’m throwing this out there to you guys…

What do you all think? Is this accurate?

Well I finally graduated with my bachelor’s degree! It took me seven years and I faced a lifetime of hardships, but I graduated with department and university honours while still fighting chronic illness and it’s comorbidities.

It’s okay if it takes you longer than “expected” to achieve your degree. I believe that working at my own pace allowed me time to have valuable experiences. I was able to dedicate myself to each new subject and opportunity because I wasn’t taking on more than I could handle. I truly absorbed all that I could out of the college experience.

Everyone achieves success at different rates. Don’t ever compare where you’re at with where someone else is at. I had to go through A LOT more than anyone else I know during undergrad, but I still succeeded in my own time. Comparing myself was unnecessary because I was learning more than just academics– learning to accept and live with a diseased body and mind. I’m proud of myself and you should be proud of yourself too, wherever you’re at.

I know, I know, I should be working on my two other fics and am absolutely the worst, but … well, this idea wouldn’t leave me alone.  So, I decided to start writing this too, and boy it was a great way to break out of writers block and get started again.  And no, this is not part of my normal babyblasters storyline.  WitD, TLtN, and the oneshots are all one connected story, but this is its own thing.  An au of an au (of an au of an … well you know).  And as such, it’s gonna be very different.  And also a lot shorter.  Yep, short chapters from me for once.  Shocking, I know!  Not too many of them either, I think.  i just wanted to write this sort of on the side to explore a few what-ifs (and because I missed writing nice Gaster!).  (side note; the assistant in this currently has no name or description because … well I didn’t know who to use.  I might go with one of the followers or Sil (a background oc from To Last the Night) but … not sure yet. )

Credit where credit is due, I wanted to point out some of the inspirations behind this (and also recommend some awesome fics).  While planning this out I wound up thinking back on two amazing works; A Year Every Minute by @askull4everyoccasion and Creative Problem Solving by bermudablue.  Both of which are fantastic and if you haven’t read either then you should stop right now and go do so.  But oddly enough the real source of inspiration for this story was … making the babyblaster bjds for spacegate.  I’m not kidding!  I wasn’t going to make a pair for myself until the chest piece I made for hers wound up warping in the oven.  I couldn’t use it for a gift, it didn’t look right anymore, but it was still a functional piece.  So … well, you’ll see …

I hope you guys like this little tangent of a fic.

Pairings: None
Characters: W. D. Gaster, 1-S

Warnings:  prepare for unexpected cute (G is not prepared)

Notes: Baby Blasters AU belongs to the wonderful @spacegate, I just write here.

…some men are quite perturbed about a women-only screening of Wonder Woman at an Alamo Drafthouse movie theater in Austin, Texas….

One man was so angry about the screening that he wrote a letter to Austin Mayor Steve Adler. In addition to writing some — ahem — eyebrow-raising ideas about women and bringing up a 1966 mass shooting, the man threatened to not grace Austin with his presence.

This is the email that Adler received on May 26:

“I hope every man will boycott Austin and do what he can to diminish Austin and to cause damage to the city’s image. The theater that pandered to the sexism typical of women will, I hope, regret it’s decision. The notion of a woman hero is a fine example of women’s eagerness to accept the appearance of achievement without actual achievement. Women learn from an early age to value make-up, that it’s OK to pretend that you are greater than you actually are. Women pretend they do not know that only men serve in combat because they are content to have an easier ride. Women gladly accept gold medals at the Olympics for coming in 10th and competing only against the second class of athletes. Name something invented by a woman! Achievements by the second rate gender pale in comparison to virtually everything great in human history was accomplished by men, not women. If Austin does not host a men only counter event, I will never visit Austin and will welcome it’s deterioration. And I will not forget that Austin is best known for Charles Whitman. Does Austin stand for gender equality or for kissing up to women? Don’t bother to respond. I already know the answer. I do not hate women. I hate their rampant hypocrisy and the hypocrisy of the ‘women’s movement.’ Women do not want gender equality; they want more for women. Don’t bother to respond because I am sure your cowardice will generate nothing worth reading.
"Richard A. Ameduri”

Today, Adler posted his response:

“Dear Mr. Ameduri,
"I am writing to alert you that your email account has been hacked by an unfortunate and unusually hostile individual. Please remedy your account’s security right away, lest this person’s uninformed and sexist rantings give you a bad name. After all, we men have to look out for each other!

"Can you imagine if someone thought that you didn’t know women could serve in our combat units now without exclusion? What if someone thought you didn’t know that women invented medical syringes, life rafts, fire escapes, central and solar heating, a war-time communications system for radio-controlling torpedoes that laid the technological foundations for everything from Wi-Fi to GPS, and beer? And I hesitate to imagine how embarrassed you’d be if someone thought you were upset that a private business was realizing a business opportunity by reserving one screening this weekend for women to see a superhero movie.

"You and I are serious men of substance with little time for the delicate sensitivities displayed by the pitiful creature who maligned your good name and sterling character by writing that abysmal email. I trust the news that your email account has been hacked does not cause you undue alarm and wish you well in securing your account. And in the future, should your travels take you to Austin, please know that everyone is welcome here, even people like those who wrote that email whose views are an embarrassment to modernity, decency, and common sense.

"Yours sincerely,
"Steve Adler”

What's the Morris Chestnut Effect?

before we get started, the only reason i named it the morris chestnut effect is because it sounds cool, morris chestnut syndrome didn’t have the same ring

any pretty black man (with muscles and a likeable, marketable persona) can in theory succeed in hollywood to some degree. if you know an actor that at least 3 white people could easily name, they are benefiting from the morris chestnut effect (in fact i named it the morris chestnut effect because i lived with two white girls and they only knew morris chestnut. their lives changed when i introduced them to idris who, weirdly enough, is usually the first guy i’d think to have benefited from the morris chestnut effect, but i guess the idris issue is far more complicated than i initially thought)

of course this isn’t a one size fits all phenomena. some of this is due to white people and their weird(ly sexual) desire to see black men all the time everywhere and most black male actors will still have trouble getting meaningful roles that match their skillset, but it’s not like opportunities are locked from them always

in comparison, darkskinned black women with equal skillsets will find that they are only household names among black audience members. they’re not doing meaningful work because it’s not being offered. their lighter counterparts will achieve a much higher rate of success because colorism

actually their lighterskinned counterparts don’t even have to be as good, that’s the Zoe Saldana Effect

does that make sense? it made much more sense in my head than it did while i was typing it

Taylor Swift Will Get Her Own Way Thanks To Spotify's IPO Ambitions And Its $1bn Loan

Ian Morris ,

There are probably other artists that wanted their music off Spotify because of its policy, but Taylor Swift was the most vocal about it. The streaming firm had, previously, demanded that any artist available to users of its paid platform also had to be available to the free, ad-supported service too. It’s this decision which Spotify appears to have reversed.

This was historically a problem for Swift, who didn’t want her new albums available on the free tier. Her label president told Rolling Stone in November 2014 “If this fan went and purchased the record, CD, iTunes, wherever, and then their friends go, ‘why did you pay for it? It’s free on Spotify,’ we’re being completely disrespectful to that superfan”.

Ultimately, of course, it’s reasonable for any artist to withdraw their work from a platform for any reason, but Swift’s makes sense for her fans, and also for her bottom line. Spotify will never pay as much as pure album sales, so why cannibalize one with the other? Swift could sell her CDs and digital downloads until demand slows, then opt to pop them on Spotify.

So why now? Well the FT suggests (paywall) this is the product of Spotify’s move to an IPO sometime soon. The music firm borrowed $1 billion last year, a loan which will be repaid on IPO giving investors TPG and Dragoneer a 20% discount on its eventual share price. The terms of that loan mean that it will also see a further 2.5% discount added for each six month period. That’s in addition to an interest rate of 5% with a further percentage point added every six months.

Spotify then needs to get as many labels onboard as possible in order to be attractive on flotation. It’s also in the middle of negotiating new deals with the major labels, and this will likely help them achieve as low a rate per stream as possible.

So while Taylor Swift isn’t the only reason to sort out this problem, it’s likely being able to say she’s back on board would be a nice little publicity bump ahead of the IPO.

Spotify now has 50m global paying customers and 100m total active users, making it the largest paid music platform. It’s only the second biggest streaming service in the US though, where Pandora - with its own free service - has far greater penetration (32% compared to Spotify’s 18%) Pandora has 80m users of its free service in the US and is worth around $5bn. Spotify is said to have a value of around $8bn.

Crunchbase suggests Spotify has so far raised $2.56B in 15 funding rounds.

tips for playing rollercoaster tycoon

(well, the first one)

- always start out with a 5 dollar entrance fee. when people remark that it’s cheap, add five more dollars. keep doing this every time people say it’s cheap.

- never make the bathrooms free. 10 or 20 cents is fine.

- be economical. put rides close to the path so you won’t have to spend a lot on paths - be creative when it comes to queue lines, make them long even though they’re close to the path

- when playing the Diamond Heights campaign, always set the inspection time for Claustrophobia to 10 minutes. it may help prevent it crashing later, it’s a preprogrammed event that you’d do well to avoid

- if Claustrophobia DOES crash, then you need to uncheck the box on the control panel of Agoraphobia that says “Synchronize with adjacent station” so that Agoraphobia will still be operational.

- the rollercoaster in the Bumbly Beach campaign is also in danger of crashing. set its inspection time to 10 minutes as well. i edited the coaster also, i added a braking section right before the trains pull into the station.

- you can sometimes “fix” a crashed coaster by editing it. a couple sections of track edited will be alright. it won’t completely erase the memory of the crash, but more people will be willing to ride the coaster.

- drown unhappy people. i know it’s unethical, but computer programs don’t sue, and sometimes you need to boost your park rating to achieve your goal

- literally hire as many handymen as possible. your park rating dips dramatically if you have vomit and dead flowers and garbage everywhere.

- if you have a section that’s particularily vomit-prone, go ahead and assign a handyman soley to that spot, using the button that has the blue footprints on it

- hire a security guard to help with vandalism. vandalism usually only happens in parks that have a long campaign stretch, like Dynamite Dunes or Diamond Heights, but guests complain about it if you don’t fix it

- if a ride breaks down due to a “Safety Cut-Out,” occasionally a guest will exit the ride with his head ducked and his hands behind his back. he’s a criminal. drown him for justice

- coasters with a lot of banking and steep drops will have a higher intensity rating and a higher nausea rating, but not always the excitement rating. some coasters will have a “Low” excitement rating, an “Ultra-Extreme” intensity rating, and a “High” nausea rating. these do not qualify as good coasters, people will be too intimidated by them and not intrigued enough. delete any of these that you end up creating. i have a big problem with these :(

- remember to always check the profits of your rides. go to the “attractions” tab on the top, the one with the slide, and it should have a drop-down menu with an option that says “Profit.” check this often. make sure people aren’t complaining about too-high prices, or other problems that can impact profit - like intensity rating, accidental path deletion, etc.

- always get merry-go-round in your park. bitches love the fairground organ.

- if you name one of your guests “Chris Sawyer,” he will sometimes pull out a camera and take pictures. if you name one of the guests “BigBucks,” he will pay double for everything he buys.

Speaking Time Stat Update:

A couple of notes:

  • 2x14 somehow managed to do even worse by the ladies than 2x13 as far as speaking time. Why this is weird: there was a 1:1 ratio of female to male regulars in this episode, and there were more female than male guest stars. Contributing to this was the fact that Jeremiah was handed a lot of exposition and J’onn got a little more glory than usual.
    • DESPITE THIS, men actually did not achieve their highest rate of gabbing in 2x14 – 2x13 still retains the honor of being “the episode where dudes wouldn’t shut up,” with guys talking for a solid 18 minutes. For comparison, 2x14 had 15 minutes and 42 seconds of male talk time.
    • UNFORTUNATELY… 2x14 still somehow gave women the fewest minutes of talk time that they’ve had all season: 10 minutes and 48 seconds. Which, when you consider the Danvers Sisters discord they went to great and contrived lengths to set up and then never resolved, is … awkward.
    • Another part of the problem was that this episode was action-heavy despite all its clunky plot manipulations that happened via dialogue – it actually had the shortest amount of talk time out of any episode so far this season.
    • tl;dr this episode tried to do way too much all at once.
  • James has now been MIA for five episodes, meaning he’s only shown up in 10 despite being a series regular.
    • For comparison, Lillian Luthor has appeared in eight.
    • Lena and Snapper Carr have each appeared in seven.
    • M’gann has appeared in six.
    • Eliza & Jeremiah have each appeared in three.

In conclusion: get your damn shit together, show.

Hi there, I love your blog! I've been following for a couple months now and I've loved (literally) everything you've posted. Thanks for all the inspiration :) I'm sure you've gotten this question before, but I'd like to start my own studyblr (to motivate myself to study for the HSK), and I'm curious as to how you two got so good at it! Any advice on how to stick to it, what to post, and just getting off the ground? Thanks so much!!

Hey there :)

We’re so glad that our study blog was able to inspire you <3 And we’re super happy that you want to start one of your own! It truly is a great way to motivate both yourself and other people ^_^

There are a few tips that we think are pretty valuable for study blogs first starting out:

1. Post original posts! While looking at other people’s posts are a great way to feel motivated/inspired, and it’s perfectly fine to run a studyblog appreciating other people’s notes, it is also important to occasionally post your own. Take photos of your own work and share them with the community! Showcasing your work also brings in more followers: amazing people who wish to follow and support your progress :)

2. Participate in blog rates/blog awards! By participating in these ‘events’, you will not only be exposing yourself to bigger blogs, but also allowing these more established blogs to present you to their followers. Furthermore, blog rates are a great way to receive constructive criticism.

3. Make friends! Don’t be shy about sending asks/messages to other blogs, either asking for tips, complimenting them, or simply extending a hand in friendship. The studyblr community is filled with wonderful people, and once you make some friends, you’ll feel right at home :)

4. Tag people! When posting original posts, it is perfectly alright to tag other blogs. Many blogs tell you on their pages whether they are tracking certain tags (e.g. we track #stvdybuddies). If so, they will be able to see your posts and help you them!

5. Establish Networks! There are many small studyblog chats/communities within the studyblr community. You can always apply to join one of these groups :) It’s a great way to make friends and to become more integrated within the community.

6. Share your achievements! If you’ve reached a milestone that you’re proud of, feel free to share it with everyone <3 Many people make posts celebrating their milestone and sometimes host special events in honor of their achievements (e.g. blog rates, blog awards, follow forever)

Montigny Mitrailleuse Mle 1863

Designed by Joseph Montigny c.1859 and adopted by the Belgian army in 1863.
37-shots rifled volley gun, firing 37 10-12mm centerfire cardboard cartridges at a rate of fire determined by the operator’s working the firing lever.
Reloading was achieved using ammunition plates halfway between a speedloader and a magazine that fit in front of the breech-block bristling with 37 individual firing pins.

The mitrailleuse - now the French word for all machine guns, originally meaning ‘grapseshooter’ - was an evolutionary dead-end in the history of rapid-fire firearms. A heavy artillery piece, it could achieve a high rate of fire in skilled hands but lacked the traverse or associated military doctrine to make it an efficient defensive weapon. Now all that being said it’s still fucking awesome.
