Abul-Ashhab related that one day ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab (ra) and a group of his companions passed by a pit that was use for the disposal of sewage an garbage. For some reason, ‘Umar was forced to stop for a short while beside the pit; he (ra) soon noticed looks of disgust and nausea on the faces of his Companions, so he said to them:

“This is your world that you strive to gain and that you cry over.”

Although some exotic species familiar to the Romans then disappeared from Europe for centuries, wild animals continued to be shipped across the Mediterranean throughout the Middle Ages and played an important role in the language of both diplomacy and royal ceremony.  Charlemagne requested and received his beloved elephant Abul Abbas from the caliph Haroun al-Rashid and was given in the course of his reign monkeys, a lion from Marmarika, and a Numidian bear.  The royal menagerie in Tulunid Cairo (late 9th century) included leopards, panthers, elephants, and giraffes, and Byzantine ambassadors to Baghdad in 917 bore witness to the grand ceremonial role played by the lines of elephants, giraffes, leopards, and lions at the caliph’s palace along the bank of the Tigris River.  Caliph Abd al-Rahman III at Cordoba received large numbers of animals as gifts: lions, horses, twenty-three camels, two beautiful gazelles, and eight ostriches from one source in 930-931, and from another source another year ten dromedaries, twenty pregnant camels, a lion, fine horses, and other animals.  Such animals often arrived accompanied by their handlers, which added to their exoticism.

Ayoob As-Sakhtayaani used to pray the night prayer, and he would conceal this. If morning arrived, he would raise his voice as if he only awoke at that hour. (Sifatus Safwah: 3/492)

Abdus Samad ibn Abdil Waarith said:
Hawshab would cry and say: My name has reached the Masjid Al-Jaami’. It is reported upon Abul Aaliyah that if more than three people were to gather and sit around him, he would get up. (At-Tawaadu’:47)

It is reported upon Bishr ibn Al-Haarith that he said: O Allaah. If you have made me famous to expose me on the day of judgement, then strip it away from me. (Az-Zuhd by Al-Bayhaqi: 147)

Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyaad said: No one loves leadership except that they are envious, transgress, search for the faults of the people and hate that anyone be mentioned with good. (Jaami’ Bayaan Al-‘ilm: 1/652)

Abdullaah ibn Al-Mubaarak said:
Sufyaan Ath-Thawri said to me: Beware of fame. Everyone I met warned me about
fame. (As-Siyar: 7/260)

Abul ‘Aaliyyah said: The Companions of Muhammad said to me: “Do not perform an action for other than Allaah, as He will leave you to the one
whom you have acted for.” (Al-Musannaf: 7/207)

Hamdoon Al-Qassaar was asked:
“Why is the speech of the Salaf more beneficial than ours?
He replied: This is because they spoke to give ascendancy to Islam and to please
The Most Merciful; whereas we speak to give ascendancy to ourselves, to seek
after the worldly life and please the creation. (Safwatus Safwah: 2/122)

Muhammad ibn Al-Qaasim said:

I accompanied Muhammad ibn Aslam for more than 20 years, and I never saw him pray two supererogatory rak’ahs, except on the day of Jum’ah. On one occasion, I heard him take an oath: “By Allaah If I was able to pray a supererogatory prayer where my two angels could not see me; I would do so out of fear of showing off. He used to enter his house and close his door. I was never aware of what he would get up to until I heard his young son conversing how he used to cry. However, when he used to go outside, he would wash his face and apply kuhl, and no sign of him crying would be visible. He used to provide for a people and clothe them, but when he would send his Messenger, he used to say: Make sure they don’t know who sent you. (As-Siyar: 12/201)

Hurmulah said:
I heard Ash-Shaafi’ee say: I hoped to be rewarded for all the knowledge that I possessed and that the people had learnt from me, but (I desired) that they would not praise me. (As-Siyar: 10/55)

Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyaad said: “Whosoever is saddened by loneliness and feels tranquil around the people, is not safe from Riyaa. (As-Siyar: 8/436)

Abu Haazim said:
“Hide your good deeds more than you hide your bad deeds.” (Al-Musannaf: 7/195)

Al-Khuraybee said: They used to prefer that a man hide his righteous deeds, (to the extent), that his
wife or anyone else wouldn’t be aware of it. (As-Siyar: 9/349)

Wakee’ said: Whoever inquires about something and he already understands it, then this is a part of showing off. (Al-Jaami’ Li Akhlaaq Ar-Raawi: 1/ 197)

‘Aqeel ibn Ma’qil said: I heard my paternal uncle, Wahb ibn Munabbih, say: Three signs of a hypocrite: when his alone he is lazy, he is energetic when in the company others and he chases after praise in all of his affairs.Three signs of an envious person: he backbites the one whom he is jealous of, if he were to meet him, he flatters him, and he is delighted at his misfortunes. (Al-
Hilyah: 4/47)

When ‘Abdur Rahman ibn Mahdi rose from a gathering, he was followed by the people. (Upon this) he said: O people! Do not follow me. (Siyar: 9/207)

Abu ‘Awn said: When the righteous people met one another they would advise each other and if they were absent they would write to one another, (with the following):
Whoever does an act seeking the hereafter then Allaah will suffice him in his worldly affairs, whoever corrects what is between him and Allaah, then Allaah will correct that which is between him and the people, and whoever corrects his behaviour in private, then Allaah will correct his situation publicly. (Al-Musannaf: 7/162)

Bishr ibn Al-Haarith said: The (person) that loves fame has not feared Allaah. He also said: Don’t act in order to be mentioned, and hide your good deeds like you hide your bad ones. (As-Siyar: 10/476)

Sa’eed ibn Al-Haddaad said: Nothing hinders from the path of Allaah like seeking praise and status. (As-Siyar: 14/ 214)

Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyaadh said: Whoever loves to be mentioned, will not be mentioned; and whoever dislikes to be
mentioned, then he will be mentioned. (As-Siyar: 8/432)

Sufyaan Ath-Thawri: Safety is that you don’t desire to be known. (As-Siyar: 7/257)

Menyempurnakan Separuh Agama

Dari Anas bin Malik radhiyallahu ‘anhu, ia berkata bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

ﺇِﺫَﺍ ﺗَﺰَﻭَّﺝَ ﺍﻟﻌَﺒْﺪُ ﻓَﻘَﺪْ ﻛَﻤَّﻞَ ﻧِﺼْﻒَ ﺍﻟﺪِّﻳْﻦِ ، ﻓَﻠْﻴَﺘَّﻖِ ﺍﻟﻠﻪَ ﻓِﻲ ﺍﻟﻨِّﺼْﻒِ ﺍﻟﺒَﺎﻗِﻲ “Jika seseorang menikah, maka ia telah menyempurnakan separuh agamanya. Karenanya, bertakwalah pada Allah pada separuh yang lainnya.” (HR. Al Baihaqi dalam Syu’abul Iman)

Lihat bahwa di antara keutamaan menikah adalah untuk menyempurnakan separuh agama dan kita tinggal menjaga diri dari separuhnya lagi.
Kenapa bisa dikatakan demikian? Para ulama jelaskan bahwa yang umumnya merusak agama seseorang adalah kemaluan dan perutnya.
Kemaluan yang mengantarkan pada zina, sedangkan perut bersifat serakah. Nikah berarti membentengi diri dari salah satunya, yaitu zina dengan kemaluan.

Coba renungkan ayat berikut, Allah Ta’ala berfirman,

ﻭَﻣِﻦْ ﺀَﺍﻳَﺎﺗِﻪِ ﺃَﻥْ ﺧَﻠَﻖَ ﻟَﻜُﻢ ﻣِّﻦْ ﺃَﻧﻔُﺴِﻜُﻢْ ﺃَﺯْﻭَﺍﺟًﺎ ﻟِّﺘَﺴْﻜُﻨُﻮﺍ ﺇِﻟَﻴْﻬَﺎ

“Dan di antara tanda-tanda kekuasaan-Nya ialah Dia menciptakan untukmu isteri-isteri dari jenismu sendiri, supaya kamu cenderung dan merasa tenteram kepadanya”

Lihatlah ayat ini menyebutkan bahwa menikah akan lebih tentram karena adanya pendamping.

Sungguh faedah yang menenangkan jiwa setiap pemuda.

Abul-Abbās Mūsā Richardson offers these post-Ramaḍān points of reflection about thanking Allaah for the increase in our ranks while not not getting tricked into catering to the large numbers (of people) and watering down the Message. He draws on the Battle of Ḥunayn, when the Companions were impressed by their numbers and then were tried as a result, as well as other important textual evidences that indicate the Truth being found with the minority, even in the ranks of the Muslims.

KETAKUTAN ULAMA SALAF TERHADAP GODAAN WANITA, BAGAIMANAKAH DENGAN KITA?

✅ Dari Abul Malih, aku mendengar Maimun bin Mihran, berkata,

لأن أوتمن على بيت مال أحب إلي من أن أوتمن على امرأة

“Aku diberi amanah untuk menjaga Baitul Mal lebih aku sukai daripada aku diberi amanah untuk menjaga seorang wanita.” (Siyar A'lamin Nubala 5/ 77)

➡ Dari ‘Atha, beliau berkata,

لو ائتمنت على بيت مال لكنت أمينا ولا آمن نفسي على أمة شوهاء. قلت أي الإمام الذهبي صدق رحمه الله

“Seandainya aku diberi amanah untuk menjaga Baitul Mal tentu aku bisa dipercaya dan aku tidak percaya terhadap diriku untuk bisa amanah dalam menjaga seorang budak wanita yang buruk mukanya.”

Aku (Imam Adz-Dzahabi) berkata, “Sungguh benar yang dikatakan beliau, semoga Allah merahmatinya.” (Siyar A'lamin Nubala 5/87-88)

✅ Imam Adz-Dzahabi juga menyebutkan dari Sufyan bin Uyainah, dari Ali bin Zaid, dari Said bin Al Musayyab dia berkata,

ما أيِسَ الشيطان مِنْ شيء إلا أتاه مِن قِبَل النساء.
ثم قال لنا سعيد وهو ابن أربع وثمانين سنة وقد ذهبت إحدى عينيه وهو يعشو بالأخرى ما شيء أخوف عندي من النساء

“Tidaklah setan putus asa dari sesuatu kecuali dia akan mendatanginya dari arah wanita.”

➡ Kemudian Said pernah berkata kepada kami, dalam keadan beliau sudah berumur 84 tahun, dan salah satu matanya buta dan yang satunya lagi sudah rabun,

“Tidak ada satu pun yang lebih aku takuti daripada godaan wanita.” (Siyar A'lamin Nubala 4/237)

✅ Imam Adz-Dzahabi juga menyebutkan, Dari Sallam bin Miskiin, telah mengatakan kepada kami Imran bin Abdullah Al-Khuza'i dia berkata, Said bin Al Musayyab berkata,

ما خِفْتُ على نفسي شيئاً مخافةَ النساء ،قالوا: يا أبا محمد! إن مثلك لا يُريدُ النساء ،ولا تُريدُهُ النساء ، فقال: هو ما أقول لكم. وكان شيخاً كبيراً أعمش

“Aku tidak merasa takut terhadap sesuatu apa pun pada diriku seperti takutnya aku terhadap godaan wanita.”

Mereka bertanya, “Wahai Abu Muhammad, orang seperti Anda memang sudah tidak menginginkan wanita dan wanita pun tidak ada yang mau dengan Anda.”
Beliau berkata, “Inilah yang aku maksudkan di hadapan kalian.” Beliau seorang kakek yang sudah tua yang rabun pandangannya (tapi masih takut terhadap godaan wanita).“ (Siyar A'lamin Nubala’ 4/241)

➡ Dari Sahabat Anas, semoga Allah meridhainya, beliau berkata,

إذا مرت بك مرأة فغمض عينيك حتى تجاوزك

"Jika ada seorang wanita yang berlalu di hadapanmu maka pejamkanlah matamu hingga dia berlalu pergi. ” (Al-Wara’ libni Abi Dunya: 72)

✅ Dari Ibnu Umar, semoga Allah meridhainya, beliau berkata,

من تضييع الأمانة النظر في الحجرات و الدور

“Di antara bentuk menyia-nyiakan amanah adalah melihat-lihat ke kamar-kamar dan rumah-rumah (orang lain).” (Al-Wara, Ibnu Abid Dunya: 71)

➡ Dari Qais bin Al Harits dia berkata, dari Salman, semoga Allah meridhainya, beliau berkata,

لأن أموت ثم أنشر ثم أموت ثم أنشر ثم أموت ثم أنشر أحب إلي من أن أرى عورة مسلم أو ـن يراها مني

“Aku mati kemudian dibangkitkan kemudian mati lagi dan dibangkitkan kemudian mati lagi dan dibangkitkan itu lebih aku sukai daripada aku melihat auratnya seorang muslim atau dia melihat auratku.” (Az-Zuhd li Ahmad: 192)

وبالله التوفيق وصلى الله على نبينا محمد وآله وصحبه وسلم
