[and his love for cats] [2/26/2016]

Abraham Lincoln really liked cats. He was always picking up stray cats and bringing them home, which irritated his wife, Mary. Once, when asked if her husband had any hobbies, Mary responded with one word; “Cats.”

Once, in March of 1865, Lincoln was at Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters, meeting with several Union commanders, planning one of the final battles, when suddenly he heard mewing, and discovered three little kittens. Upon being informed that these kittens were orphans, he scooped them up in his lap. “Poor little creatures, don’t cry; you’ll be taken care of,” he said, He sat, stroking their backs as they planned a crucial battle in the war. “Kitties, thank God you are cats, and can’t understand this terrible strife that is going on,” he said. Before leaving the tent at the end of the meeting, he turned to Colonel Bowers and said “I hope you will see that these poor little motherless waifs are given plenty of milk and treated kindly.”  [Source]

Lincoln also once fed a tabby cat using one of the golden forks at the white house. Mrs. Lincoln was rather embarrassed by this because it was during a formal dinner with guests and everything. Lincoln responded by saying, “ If the gold fork was good enough for former President James Buchanan, then I think it is good enough for Tabby.“
