ABC News tells viewers that scenes of destruction in Gaza are in Israel

More than fifty Palestinians have been killed and another 450 wounded since Monday in Israel’s ongoing assault on the besieged Gaza Strip, dubbed “Operation Protective Edge” by the Israeli army.

As usual, mainstream media outlets are straining to paint Israel as the victim, defending its people against irrational Palestinian rocket fire.

There is no equating the killing and maiming of dozens of innocent Palestinians with scared Israelis seeking shelter from crude rockets that rarely cause damage. But that hasn’t stopped media outlets from trying, and in some cases, outright lying, to distort the violence.

In one stark example, ABC News’ Diane Sawyer misidentifies scenes of the aftermath of Israeli missile strikes in Gaza as destruction caused by Palestinian rocket fire.

As Sawyer segues into the segment, she says, “We take you overseas now to the rockets raining down on Israel today as Israel tried to shoot them out of the sky.” Next to her is video footage not of Israelis or even Israel, but of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.

Sawyer then incorrectly describes an image of a Palestinian family gathering belongings in the smoking debris of a missile-hit home in Gaza as “an Israeli family trying to salvage what they can.”

Sawyer then describes an image of a Palestinian woman surrounded by destroyed homes as “one woman standing speechless among the ruins,” with the implication that she is Israeli.

Sawyer’s bald misreporting reflects either a deliberate lie by ABC News or willful ignorance so severe that Palestinian death and misery is invisible even when it’s staring ABC producers right in the face.

ABC Nightline "Expose" Turns Into #GamerGate Recruiting Tool [UPDATED]

http://youtu.be/gAyncf3DBUQ

How do you screw up reporting on something THIS badly?

ABC News appears to be moving into damage-control mode as the comments sections for their homepage and YouTube videos become inundated with downvotes and comments about poor journalism. Some commenters, having already received dozens of supportive replies and sometimes THOUSANDS of “thumbs-up”, report their comments are now being deleted.

It’s true, of course, that those thousands of supporting responses COULD just be a load of “sockpuppet” accounts, and if ABC thinks that’s the case then it might explain their move. However, one other factor seems to be much more telling of the tale:

Namely, that the videos just aren’t getting any SUPPORT. Even if one totally eliminates the 7,600 downvotes on the version appearing on ABC News’ official YouTube channel, removing them from even the total unique-view count as though they don’t exist, there are still fewer than 500 upvotes out of approximately 31,000 remaining views.

Less than 2% support, for a video which portrays the #GamerGate movement in some of the harshest light to date.

If those downvotes are legitimate, however, that’s an awful lot of people who may well have just joined a movement that ABC was trying to help kill off.

[UPDATE: Archived copies of the ABC News YouTube page appear to confirm deletions, particularly of popular and influential Internet personalities including TotalBiscuit (yes, THAT TotalBiscuit, with over 2,300 upvotes prior to deletion).]

BEFORE: https://archive.today/dQRrQ

AFTER: https://archive.today/TM7Qk

Note also that the page had this much support for pro-#GamerGate views at a time when it had less than half the total viewing numbers.

As a final, perhaps poignant, observation on the issue of journalistic censorship was this surviving comment:

[UPDATE: For purposes of comparison, I dug up the numbers for viewership.  It’s rather enlightening.]

NIGHTLINE AVERAGE VIEWERSHIP - approximately 1,653,000.

TOTALBISCUIT YOUTUBE SUBSCRIBERS - precisely 1,922,814.

Which isn’t counting any of the OTHER highly-popular YouTube commentators who commented — unfavorably — on ABC’s work.

I think it’s safe to say Nightline just walked themselves into a buzzsaw.

[UPDATE: The video continues to explode with views, now exceeding 166,000… but with upvotes still not breaking 900, putting its favorable rating solidly into the <1% bracket.  Downvotes?  Over 23,000.]
