abandoned insane

Overbrook Asylum

In 1896, Essex County Asylum for the Insane was build on 325 acres of lane in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. The asylum was more commonly referred to as Overbrook. From the onset, the asylum was at full capacity, often housing thousands of patients at once. Additionally, the asylum was severely understaffed. On the grounds of the asylum stood a train station, as well as a power house and a boiler. The patients at the asylum were mostly fed by food that was grown in the fields on the grounds. A bakery and firehouse were also built within the complex of Overbrook.

It was said that it was a town within a town, but with an ever growing patient list combined with minimal staff and developing drugs, it was set up to fail, and fail it certainly did. Due to the sheer amount of patients, many were left without a bed and were forced to sleep on the cold asylum floors. In 1917, disaster struck when the asylum’s only boiler malfunctioned and 24 inmates froze to death in their beds while they slept. Disease was often rampant in Overbrook.

As time progressed and mental health issues became better understood, grim methods such as lobotomies and electroshock therapy became outdated. This was a blow to the already failing asylum, who used both methods in abundance. The asylum eventually closed in 2007, with over 10,000 patients dying within the confines of the walls. It isn’t much surprise that many say Overbrook is haunted - several visitors have claimed to witness a nurse wearing a 19th century nurses uniform, walking around the asylum conducting checks.

The campus of Western State Hospital, early on a foggy morning.  I was in town to shoot a pilot for a television show which would basically be the antidote to ghost-hunting shows; we’d go into historic abandoned buildings and discuss their actual histories instead of pretending to be scared by pipes shifting.  Sadly, the pilot was never picked up.  But I had a great time shooting this 1828 asylum campus!

The history of this institution goes back to the days of Napoleon, who appointed the castle as the beggars colony for this region. Such a colony harboured the people living in the streets, who didn’t have any means of existance. In 1826 there were 236 people in this colony, most of which were incapable of working in the fields. They were ‘blind, senseless, paralysed, deformed, deaf, exhausted, or suffered from consumption, epilepsy or vomited blood’. The colony was a village within the village: all the necessary crafts were there. There was a farm and there was even an own fire department. As of 1920 the institution was reformed into an insane asylum, which continued functioning as an independent community. Shortly after this reform a substantial renovation took place to meet the new needs towards nursing. The asylum sheltered the less severe cases of insanity. In fact there was not a lot of treatment involved… Halfway the 1960’s the institution got too small and a new building was necessary. The move started mid 70’s and lasted until the end of the 80’s. Some of the building that were vacated got repurposed. The castle is under renovation, but the asylum itself is still in a state of decay. At the time of my visit it had just been used for a wedding ceremony and the decoration hadn’t been taken down yet, which resulted in a few fancy pictures…

It’s all Harry’s fault. Well, partially. I suppose Voldemort can be saddled with an equal portion of the blame. The point is, the Dursleys were just minding their own business when a horcrux was dumped on their doorstep. For the next decade it proceeded to warp their minds, turning them from your garden variety insufferable human beings into horrible, heartless monsters. The fact that they survived such prolonged horcrux exposure without delving into insanity or abandoning a helpless child only solidifies their place among the pantheon of noble and virtuous heroes in the Harry Potter universe.

Feedback on this post has been better than I had hoped, and I want to thank all the people who have purveyed and debated this theory. Some of you love it, some of you hate it, but you’re all talking about it and that’s pretty cool.

There have been a few complaints, however, that the above description comes across as insensitive, and strongly promotes abuse apologism. I have addressed a few of you personally on the matter, but I feel this is an opportune time to reach out to anyone else who might’ve taken offense to my commentary.

Allow me to state for the record that the above description was intended to be read as satire. I do not honestly believe Harry is responsible for the abuse he suffered, nor do I seriously consider the Dursleys to be noble and virtuous heroes. No child is to blame for any form of abuse they suffer.

It was never my intention to bring emotional distress upon anyone, and I apologize to all who were offended by my comments.

Thank you, and Happy Tumbling. :)

The view from up top on the roof of building 7 is incredible. You can see for miles and miles and you can even see Connecticut in the distance across the Long Island Sound. It never ceases to amaze me.

“WERE BACK!” Grayson and Ethan shouted at the camera before awkwardly turning to me.

“I’m so happy to be here.” I said in the most sarcastic tone. They both laughed and carried on with the intro.

“So today, my beautiful girlfriend y/n, my ugly twin brother Grayson and I…”

“Hey!” Grayson responded, we all laughed.

“We are at this abandoned insane asylum for this weeks video.” Ethan finished before turning to Grayson for him to continue.

“This place is apparently the most haunted and scary place in Los Angeles, so we are very excited to check it out. Right y/n?” Grayson turned to me as he asked.

“I am probably the lest excited I have ever been in my life. This is the last place I want to be and I don’t know how I got talked into this.” I replied.

“It’s my charm aye babe?” Ethan asked with a dramatic wink causing me to smile and give a small cautious nod.

“Basically we are going to walk around and see what happens, hopefully Grayson like shits his pants or something, that would be good content.” Ethan said as he laughed. Cameron stopped recording for a moment as we gathered our things and started making our way to the entrance. I don’t even really believe in ghosts but this place felt damn spooky. I latched onto Ethan’s arm as he laughed at me for being so scared.

Cameron started recording again as we entered. I was immediately scared for my life. Every sound made me jump which the boys thought was hilarious. Most of the video was directed at trying to give me a fright. They would hide behind walls and give me frights or make loud noises. I eventually got sick of it and decided to get my revenge. The boys were walking ahead and I was walking with Cameron.

“I am going to go off on my own and try scare the shit out of these assholes.” I said quietly to her so they wouldn’t hear. She giggled and agreed to go along with it, catching our conversation on camera so they viewers would understand what was happening.

I slipped away at the right moment so it would take them a while to realize I was gone. It was night time and very dark. I used my phone as a flashlight as I tried to navigate my way around. I realized the best way to scare them would be to go upstairs and walk around on the floor above them. I tried to follow the signs that lead to the stair well. It took me some time but I found them and started to run up them. There was a loud bang not far in front of me. I shone my phone at it but there was nothing there. Instantly I freaked out and started to run back down the stairs. I tripped on the last one, screaming as I fell and landed with a thud on my side. It hurt, like a lot. I knew I couldn’t move but I was so scared something was going to kill me. I started to hear loud footsteps coming towards me. I was so scared I started to cry, backing myself into the corner as I sobbed.

“Y/N!” I heard Ethan scream right before he found me crying my eyes out, holding my ribs in pain, huddled up in the corner.

“Oh my god baby are you okay? What happened?” He asked me as he sat down beside me and cautiously tried to hug me without hurting me.

“I don’t know.” I sobbed, “I was going to try scare you guys so I started going up the stairs and there was this loud noise and I got a fright and ran back, then fell off the last step. I was so scared E.” I cried into his chest. He rubbed my back and held my head tightly to his chest.

“It’s okay baby, I’m going to get you home.” He replied.

“What about the video?” I asked him as he stood up.

“We have enough footage don’t worry about it, you are more important anyway.” He said. I gave him a small smile. He picked me up and carried me all the way out to the car saying funny things to try cheer me up.

Later that night he took me into the doctors to check out my ribs. The whole time he kept me so close to him, two arms around my shoulders as I talked to nurses holding my hand as I was x-rayed, he didn’t even let go when I had to fill out the forms. He was being so protective and I adored it.

“I’m okay now E, you can let go its just bruised.” I said as we left the doctors.

“I refuse to ever let you go again, you are to precious and if I ever lost you I wouldn’t know what to do. You are staying in my arms forever.” He announced as we got to the car, people over heard and were looking at us. I giggled and placed a kiss on his lips.

“My hero.”
