“The Moons of Thalos 3″ Overview

So I just finished watching this episode after much anticipation. Raph and Leo are two of my favorite turtles and while Raph was a little late on the Bandwagon of Love, Ciro and Brandon weren’t going to leave us hanging when they announced Mona Lisa’s debut at San Diego Comic Con. For Shellheads everywhere, we were waiting for Mona’s appearance. Some of us were even dreading her appearance because this meant that she was just going to be another ‘love interest’. But after the show has evolved and grown over the years, I think the creative team behind the 2k12 series are starting to understand what the fans want a little more after a few complaints of Donnie and April’s relationship.

To put it simply, I liked Mona Lisa as a character. Compared to her vibrant, almost ditzy personality from the 80s show, 2k12 Mona Lisa was a pure, ultimate badass, which not only appeased the fans, but caught Raphael’s attention as well. I was really interested to see how they were going to make a tough brute like Raph act while he’s in love and while I’m a sucker for seeing the turtles act lovestruck and cute, I had my compliments and my complaints.

First, the compliments. While Raph is in fact the hardheaded tough guy in the group, we’ve noticed that he does have a soft spot for certain things. This is mostly when it comes to animals - as we’ve seen in Season 1 and some of Season 2 - and his younger brother, Mikey. Ten minutes into “The Moons of Thalos 3″, we’re shown that Raph wasn’t attracted to Mona Lisa based on her looks like the rest of his brothers, who’ve all fallen in love with their ladies ‘at first sight’. But no, it takes Raph a few knockout punches and a finishing blow for him to realize, “Holy shit, this woman’s a badass!”, which is GOOD! To me, the only type of woman I can picture Raph with is someone that can keep up with him. Someone who can catch his interest, and what better way to do that than with brute force? I’m not saying Raph’s ideal woman has to be EXACTLY like him, but she has to be able to hold her ground when he has one of his blow outs. Not to mention hold the patience of a saint, because God knows how much time and effort that woman would have to put in order to get Raph to ‘open up’ emotionally, which is not his strong suit at all.

Going back on the topic of Raphael’s soft spot, I thought the writers did a decent job of making him act the way he did around Mona. It was almost similar to the way Donnie acts around April, but a little less … um, creepy? I also thought it was cute how he attempted to flirt with her while also gave her a name that he could better pronounce. So far, Raph, your Flirt Game is stronger than Leo’s. Nice job! XD

Moving right along, what I noticed in this episode would not really be considered a complaint, but more like a loophole. If Raph was attracted to Mona Lisa purely because she could kick his ass, then why doesn’t Raphril exist? I mean…

Know what I’m saying? But I guess April’s already got her hands full with Casey and Donnie. Although it would be interesting having her wind up picking neither of them and going straight to Raph. But we’ll leave that to fan fiction.

Now, let’s talk about the complaints. Although, yes, I did enjoy the way Raph acted around Mona, but everything just … happened too fast. Now, with Mikey and Renet, that went at a pace that I was comfortable with, even though the duration was the same as this episode. I don’t know, I think what killed it for me was this:

If they would’ve cut that scene when Professor Honeycutt walked in and then Raph DIDN’T get a kiss, I would’ve been perfectly satisfied with that. Then their relationship could’ve had time to grow. But no, it was more of a:

“I really like you.”

“Me too, I think you’re a noble warrior.”

“Oh no, we might die, but I need to tell you how I feel.”

“Don’t worry, the feeling is mutual.”

End of episode.

Hell, even the whole noses touching thing would’ve been a way cuter ending. Or maybe their foreheads touching? Either way, a full on kiss wasn’t working for me. At least not this EARLY. And while yes, Mikey did get a kiss from Renet the first episode they met, it still gets a free pass because it was a kiss on the cheek. It wasn’t a full on mouth-to-mouth passionate kiss, it was more of a kiss of affection. There’s a difference between passion and affection because one leaves room for growth. But to me, that’s just my two cents. Was I still squealing like an obsessive fan girl after watching this episode. You bet your ass I was! But after I took a moment to compose myself, I gathered up a more coherent review on what I thought about this episode and Raph and Mona’s relationship. All in all, I’d ship it, but I would’ve liked the pace to slow down a bit. That’s my only complaint. ;)
