a little help from her friends

anonymous asked:

I have a friend who has ADHD and is a smoker. She says that she knows smoking is bad but smoking is a way of self medicating for her. Because it helps her pay attention and stops her from fidgeting for a little bit. Is that possible, that smoking helps with some symptoms of adhd?

Yes, nicotine does do that for some people. Self-medication isn’t always the most healthy way to deal with ADHD, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Quicker Hamilton Facts

Y’all STILL ALSO need to realize:

Lafayette go soooo drunk once that his brother-in-law had to drag him home

Hamilton’s ship caught on fire coming over to America

Jefferson had a mockingbird named Dick

He also owned a goat that killed someone

After being told about Hamilton’s death, Jefferson became quiet and aloof as he quickly found Burr to arrest him.

EVERY. FOUNDING. FATHER. HAD. DADDY. ISSUES

Which is why Hamilton didn’t want to get close to Washington in fear he would be a father figure and let him down.

Washington refused to respond letters from the British because they didn’t address him correctly.

Hamilton was claimed dead after destroying British supply in and trying to cross a river with British gun fire only to show up soaking wet later while everyone was drinking to his memory

When Lafayette came back to America before his death, he and Jefferson hugged and cried with each other

They said God Bless to each other

AND Jefferson and Lafayette did a lot of weed and a lot of alcohol

Washington liked to pretend his knife and forks were drumsticks and play music on tables

Despite common belief, Hamilton would often make time for his family and would often right home to Eliza about how homesick he was

Martha Washington outlived four children and two husbands and said the worst day of her life was went Jefferson came to visit.

Laurens was getting out of bed when he hit his head on the ceiling

Hamilton was supposed to go on Washington’s boat during Valley Forge but he wasn’t used to this thing called “winter” and often got sick a lot.

Thomas Jefferson told his grandchildren to flirt with everyone despite their gender so everyone would like them

Jefferson had an expensive bust of Hamilton in his house for no other reason than he wanted one.

Burr set himself on fire trying to light a candle on fire with gunpowder.

TWICE

Hamilton was not only gay for Laurens, but also for the spy John Andre.

He said Andre was too pretty to be hung

Franklin and Adams shared a bed and fought over whether a window open was good for your health while you slept.

Franklin won because he ranted so much that Adams fell asleep.

Lafayette often joked about his name, saying “It’s not my fault, I was baptized like a Spaniard, with the name of every conceivable saint who might offer me more protection in battle”

When George Washington was 17, a girl stole his clothes just to see him looking for them while naked.

Eliza had a mourning ring which she worn on a ribbon around her neck and had a lock of Hamilton’s hair

Engraved inside the ring was the day he died and how old he was

Lafayette was buried under soil from Bunker Hill in France

During World War 1, General Pershing and a perade went to Lafayette’s grave and said “Lafayette, we’re here!”

Sooo…America help Lafayette in a war, just a little toooo late.

After Hamilton’s death, Eliza referred to her late husband as “my Hamilton” and “my Alexander”

When giving tour of her home, she would stare for many moments at a bust of Hamilton and would whisper “my Hamilton”

Burr bought a coconut for about $40 today because why not.

Hamilton was called “The Little Lion” because of his mouth and small stature.

Burr would often refer to Hamilton as “my dear friend Hamilton, whom I shot”

Burr was attacked by bedbugs and proceeded to sleep on the floor for 6 hours

Burr’s daughter, Theodosia, was lost at sea.

Burr had sex with A LOT of ladies in Europe…after he killed Hamilton

The smell of booze is in the air and the music is pounding loudly, much to your discontent. The blinding light of your phone’s screen tells you it’s half past four in the morning and you are done. Done with your drunk friends, done with the loud music, done with your feet hurting in your heels, done with your restrictive outfit, you are just… done.

Harry, standing at the other side of the room, clad in his white dress shirt and dress pants, is looking dishevelled, with his hair a mess and his cheeks blushed, the result of the mixture of the alcohol he’s consumed and the heat of the stuffy club. You can see he’s tired, his eyes in slits as his fingers get a little looser around the glass in his hand. His friends, however, are not and he can’t say no to them for the life of him, especially when he was the sole reason as to why all of you were out for the night.

Having sold out his first solo tour in a matter of minutes, his friends had decided to take him out for a night on the town to celebrate the accomplishment and you, being one of his closest friends, couldn’t miss it. He’d told you he’d need someone to take him home and who were you to deny him? You were used to it by now.

It was always the same routine: the two of you would go out and by the end of the night, his fingers would be gripping to yours as you guided his drunk self out through the back doors of whatever club you had gone to, towards the town car he hired for the night, his head resting on your lap as soon as the door closed behind you. That was the routine and everyone knew it and it was why, wherever Harry was, you were there too.

Okay guys that chat was just a chat but daaaamnn it spoke volumes.

The clip yesterday indicated very much that Sana is feeling a little left out from her girl squad…like she is having trouble relating with them all of a sudden?

I couldn’t help but notice that her entire demeanour with the boys changed when she was with the girls.

she literally went from this

to this

and it breaks my heart that she’s feeling uncomfortable and a little distant from her friends.

I feel like the shot we saw before she entered the room implied this kind of distance as well.

Sana hovers in the doorway for a moment, almost like she’s observing another world, like she is preparing herself. By us viewing the girl squad from over her shoulder we get a true feel of the distance that Sana must be feeling.

After details like offering Sana pizza with meat on it and discussing sex in detail, we become further aware of the small things that make her feel a little different to her friends and I think it is building up inside her. This kind of loneliness, like no one understands her and she’s scared and not sure how to try and make them understand, how to relate.

ahhhhh and then that chat, how the girls just ignored her when talking about Vilde being the only one who hadn’t had a boyfriend before. I know they didn’t intend it but to Sana it would feel almost like she didn’t counted? Like her faith suddenly took her out of the equation. She no longer became valid. I know it’s just a small thing but as we know with skam, these small things count and build up.

I feel like something big is brewing for Sana and ahhhhh I can’t wait to see how this all unfolds <3

Let me know your thoughts <3 :)

The Signs as People I’ve Known

Aries: She was the epitome of a free spirit. Her blunt and aggressive personality wore on me at times, but she was a genuine person who struggled in her mind more than she let show. She could kick anyone’s ass, and she knew it.

Taurus: The first guy I hooked up with in college that was actually good. Short with broad shoulders, he was intimidating in public, but a vulnerable romantic in private. He was hard to connect with, but he continued to pop up here and there. I think he’s a newscaster now.

Gemini: My favorite teacher of all time. Junior English and Journalism, which I had back to back. She taught me the importance of writing through the blocks. We’re now good friends years later. She told me I changed her life as a student. She inspires me to this day.

Cancer: She’s obsessed with history, the moon, and nature. I met her on the first day of high school and we’ve been friends ever since. A Leslie Knope type. I consider her my family. A giant nerd with a lot of love to give. Crazy hair and wears her heart on her sleeve. She likes to dance on the roof with her cat.

Leo: He married one of my best friends, a redneck with a giant heart. He’s a ‘straight’ white male redneck from Virginia who loves drag race, admits everyone’s a little gay, and would literally do anything for his wife. He can fix anything, or will drive everyone crazy trying. One of the shyest guys I know at first.

Virgo: My momma. I’m biased, but everyone agree she’s probably the most selfless hard working person I know. Shes prone to disappear without warning, but she deserves it after spending every day helping people. She’d be happy living in a shack in the mountains as long as she could see her loved ones.

Libra: My first best friend, we spent every weekend together playing pretend and video games. He encouraged me to be myself and to do what I love. He was always taller than me, and had a new girlfriend every few months.

Scorpio: I met her my first night working at forever21. She was genuinely the most beautiful woman I’d ever met, and still is. Me and her would be stationed by the front doors to intimidate shoplifters with our Scorpio glare. She went on to be a fitness guru in California living the most aesthetic ass life ever.

Sagittarius: This is the bitch you want on your side in an argument. If Daria was done by Disney, she’d be it. Art ho and owns it. She’s an underrated fashion icon and scrapbooking addict. A walking contradiction, and I can relate to that. Just wants to hold tiny animals and talk shit about your enemies while watching YouTube poop.

Capricorn: One of my dearest friends who moved away. Prone to bad choices, she was born a rebel. She can pull of any look, and probably has. Most woke friend in the group. Covered in freckles. She has pet rabbits she treats better than herself and most people. Extremely difficult to read sometimes.

Aquarius: We go way back, and he is the wildest craziest fucker I’ve ever known. From sexual escapades, possibly not legal ventures, and his encyclopedia-like knowledge of film and music, he’s an enigma unlike any other being on earth. Tall and lanky with a perpetual baby face. Don’t pick up his phone call if you don’t have at least half an hour to lose.

Pisces: The best sex I’ve ever had, and one of the dreamiest souls ever. He keeps a lot to himself, but randomly his emotions and thoughts would pour out at 3am. He has a beautiful voice, and is really well liked. Works well with kids too! The ideal boyfriend on paper, but we both agreed that’s not in our cards. I was lying, but I don’t think he was. Hates social media, but loves social gatherings.

SHOOT Reunion Panel

Sarah and Amy had lunch together a couple weeks ago - they are good friends and they have a lot in common so keeping in touch is fun.

Sarah’s favorite things about Shaw: her eating food with knives.
She also says Shaw’s foreplay would have been cutting each other and punching each other and biting.
Shaw was masculine and always equal to the boys - never portrayed otherwise. That was her most favorite part - how tough and violent.

Amy’s favorite part about Root? “I think Sarah should answer.”
Amy loved getting to flirt with and annoy Shaw, because Sarah is good at portraying the anger. “But I knew she loved me.”
“Both the characters kind of ran things - the girls in charge” - Amy on Shoot

Sarah’s fave ep was 6741!
Sarah took the role because it went to dark places you don’t get to go to on TV.
Sarah’s fave scene: end of 6741 by the carousel! It was very challenging but will always be the 1st thing she thinks of when thinking of POI
Sarah says “I only look good because Amy makes me look good.”

Amy says she liked the part (in 6741) “was when Sarah was biting me”
Amy says she loves their first meeting - the iron and all the sexual tension.
“Was this relationship always meant to happen?” Sarah: (shouting) YES! F**K YEAH!!

“How do you prepare to do a different version of the character, like in 6741?” SARAH: Acting is a lot of human psychology and we are all more than just one thing. With actors you find the closest part of you to the character; she tried to tap into herself there.
Sarah: “There were plenty of times when I was playing Shaw that I didn’t know if I was doing a good job.”
Sarah: I wasn’t supposed to emote much, but we aren’t like robots.

SS: “Kissing Amy is like biting into the most succulent peach. It’s sweet & juicy & just a little wet. It’s better than your dream, sister.”

Someone asked them to improve a scene and Amy says “Hasn’t someone here written some fanfic? … We’ll do a stage reading of anyone’s fic.”
Sarah and Amy acting out Root coming back alive.
“Root.”
“Did you miss me?”
“Is that you?”
“Are you ready for this?”
“I’ve never been more ready”
“Look behind you”
(They [fake] kiss)

Someone asked about SHOOT kinks and Amy just said “we’re gonna keep things ziptied.”

Sarah says Shaw definitely realized she loved Root back in s4; that at the beginning she didn’t have a thing for Root & took her by surprise
“In an alternate universe the two of them were together and made little SHOOT babies.” - Sarah
Sarah says in s4 the flirtations started working, like when Root picked her up on the bike & when Shaw realized she needed Root to help her
Sarah says 6,741 was a result of the fans feedback on Twitter.

Amy says that Root got her hacker skills from playing Oregon Trail.

Sarah said kissing your friend is like kissing your sister.

Amy says the weird part is the audience of the cast and crew when shooting, but she was glad Sarah was there.
Amy also said that there’s not a person she’d rather have that experience with than Sarah. (About shooting 6741)

Amy says Root made the decision in s5 she did because if she chose Shaw, there would be no world anyway.
Amy also says that being The Machine was the closest Root could get to having both.

Sarah likes doing films because you can take more chances and move at a slower pace.
Amy likes TV because you gain a family in the crew & the characters get to evolve and change. “But I guess shows can be cancelled.”

“In canon we see Shaw has a PD, and Root probably does as well, how does that change the way you approach the characters?”
Amy says that’s where you got a lot of quirks of the characters, but you just play them as truthful to what’s on the page.
Sarah says she remembers she had to look up Axis II disorders to learn how to play things accurate.

Sarah loved working w/Bear b/c the takes were different because you had to work w/what he wanted to do. “You’re not gonna out cute the dog”
Amy telling a story about how they were shooting outside and it was SO COLD they were both getting frostbite but they had to keep shooting. But then the animal handler came & had to take Bear because it was too cold for him, so she was jealous.

When asked, “Did Root have a crush on Hannah?” Amy said, “She was before your time, you don’t have to be jealous.” To Sarah.

Talking about new projects- Sarah: It’s kind of like a TV version of Inception. She goes into people’s subconscious to help them.
Sarah also did an Amazon pilot called “Halfway House” where she plays a meth addict.

Amy says she’s afraid to talk about her new project.

Sarah closes the panel by acknowledging the support of fans and is thankful because they’re why they are where they are.

Thank you to starrymag
Why do people think Lena will be evil? Of all the Lena Luthor versions just one is really a villain

Why do people always say that Lena has to be evil if they follow the Comics when she isn’t evil in most of them? And she isn’t evil in other TV appareances either. Let’s see what we have here:

In the comics

First version

Was first introduced in Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane #23. This version of her has psychic abilities thanks to one of Lex’s experiments. She wants to work wih the FBI but they don’t let her because of her past. She joins a band of criminals only to bring them back to justice and after Supergirl discovers this she tries to get her that job with the FBI. She’s good and she loses her abilities later.

Second version

She first appears in Superman: Secret Origin and then in Adventure Comics. This version of Lena is paralyzed after an accident. She’s a single mom, she has a daughter, Lori Luthor.  Lex cures Lena but then uncures her and  won’t reveal how he did it until Superman is dead. She’s not evil in this version either.

Third Version

She’s in The New 52 era of the DC comics. This version of Lena suffered from G.B. syndrome and when Lex tried to cure her faster he left her paralyzed. She works in the labs of Lexcorp and she helps it become a global powerhouse. After a lot of stuff happens she turns against Lex and becomes a supervillian, Ultrawoman. She gains powers in this version too.

Fourth version

She’s from Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the Eighth Grade. She’s Linda (Kara)’s best friend. They attend the same boarding school. She’s 13 and she’s super smart. She’s actually really nice and a really good friend, she’s a little antagonistic, not really a villain though. She blames Supergirl for what happened to Lex but after some things happen she changes her mind.

Bonus

I don’t think Lex’s daugther, Lena Luthor II, counts because that’s not really the same character. In that universe Lex did have a sister named Lena, who was killed by their foster father, and he named his daughter after her. His daughter, Lena, was controlled by Brainiac.

In TV shows

First Version

She was in Superboy, a TV show from 1988. Lex and Lena were abused by their father all the time when they were kids. Lex kills their parents and some years later Lena fakes her death to escape the Luthor name. When Lex finds out she “died” he tries to destroy the planet but Lena, who was found by Clark and Lana, stops him. She was good.

Second Version

She appeared in Smallville initially as Tess Mercer, who later discovers she’s Lutessa Lena Luthor. She’s the illegitimate daughter of Lionel and was left in an orphanage when she was five. She works a lot with Clark and is part of the Checkmate organization. She seemed antagonistic at first but she was good.

And then, we have our Lena and so far she seems to be nothing but good, and Katie has said so, she’s genuine and honest, what you see is what you get. So I don’t really think they will turn her into a villain

Even if Nick did piss him off, Harry couldn’t help but be proud of his best friend whenever he was awarded opportunities. He worked hard, and it was nice to see that hard work pay off in the end. So, when Nick mentioned that you were having a viewing party for his appearance on The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, Harry feared that he wouldn’t be able to celebrate the milestone with him.

“Ask her,” he demanded one afternoon.

Nick laughed, his eyes widening at Harry’s insistence. After little pleading from his friend, Nick sent a text asking you if Harry could be his plus one for the dinner party. Once he’d sent it, Harry forced Nick to show him the text for proof, figuring that it was just like him to say he’d asked you when he didn’t, instead showing up to the party with Harry anyway, thinking it was funny to throw both of you for a loop. Nick’s phone dinged minutes later, your name lighting up the screen. Your response of “Sure.” had caused Harry to go into an existential crisis, the wrinkle in his brow deep as he pulled at his lips.

“She doesn’t want me there,” he grunted. “‘m not goin’.”

“Mom,” Dean gasps, relieved beyond measure. It had been exhausting cutting their way through hoards of demons and angels alike, but they’d finally found her among the wreckage. “You’re ok.”

Sam raised an eyebrow, spattered with black gore. “And in charge, apparently.”

Mary made an embarrassed little gesture, the beret on her head tipping down slightly. “There’s no nationalities here anymore. Just people. All of us, united against this. It’s what I wanted from the beginning.”

Dean nods; he can appreciate the simplicity. “Still, you look like you did pretty well for yourself.”

Mary smiles, small and secret. “Well, I had some help from a friend.”

She looks over her shoulder. Dean and Sam twist to look as well.

From around a pillar of stone comes a snatch of a coat whipping in the wind, not tan but black, but the eyes are still the same.

Dean’s lips part in surprise. Sam gives an awed smile. “Cas,” he says.

This Castiel joins Mary’s side and sticks his hands into the pocket of his coat. “Hello,” he says, stiffly but almost shyly. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Dean’s heart drops to somewhere around his knees. I’ve heard. Because this is a world where Sam and Dean never existed. Castiel has never met them before.

Castiel looks at him. “You must be Dean,” he says, but it’s wrong. The voice is the same, but the way it says his name isn’t. The tenderness that comes with the sort of friendship they had is totally absent, and it’s so jarring that Dean actually feels like he’s going to cry.

What is it with the revived and his expectations lately?

Dean swallows past the lump in his throat. “Yeah,” he croaks.

It’s been six months since Castiel died in the real world. They threw themselves into finding a way to save the one person they could, and now they have this to deal with.

Or, well, Dean does. Castiel turns to Sam and says, “I hear I’m a ‘hugger’” and Sam swoops him up into an embrace, laughing loudly and slapping him on the back like nothing’s amiss. Like this is a gift.

It’s not. It’s just twisting the knife deeper.

“Dean?” Mary asks him.

He snaps his eyes back to her. He shakes his head and turns on his heel.

He can feel the familiar weight of a pair of eyes boring holes into his back as he walks away.

percyyoulittleshit  asked:

I write a bad pick up line on your cup every time I’m your barista’ Or ‘Should I be concerned about how much caffeine you’re taking in’ For Percabeth

“Coffee guy has a crush on you,” Piper says without preamble, flicking a page in her reading.

“Uh huh,” Annabeth mutters, dragging a highlighter over a line in her book. It’s only after she’s finished an irritated scribble in the margin that the words really penetrate. She glances up at her friend, who is leaning across the table looking amused. “What? No. Don’t be ridiculous.”

“I’m always ridiculous. And always right. He keeps refilling your coffee.”

Annabeth, who has been lost in a haze of architecture for longer than the hour Piper has been sitting in the cafe with her, has not really been aware of her drink being refilled. She’s reached for her mug when she wanted a drink, and the mug has always had coffee in it. The logical inconsistency between the amount of times she’d reached for the cup and the cup never being empty had not really jumped out at her until now.

“If he’s refilling my coffee and not yours, that just makes him rude.”

“Oh, no. He’s been refilling mine. When you started swearing at your book before, it nearly overflowed, and it wasn’t because he was scandalised.”

Annabeth sighs, refusing to glance over her shoulder at the coffee guy in question. It’s not like she doesn’t already know what he looks like, the guy is six foot tall with a build like an Olympian swimmer and a jawline that could cut glass. She manages to drag her brain to a halt before it starts listing things to compare his eye colour to: Piper is smirking at her reading in a way that suggests she’s learnt how to read minds.

“He was probably impressed with my command of the english language.”

“He was impressed with something, all right.” Piper shuts her folder with a snap. “Right, i’m done here.”

“That reading was fifty-one pages, you’re so full of shit.”

“The fact that you know how long my readings are is terrifying, you know that?”

“Do your homework!”

“Can’t hear you, running away to get a restraining order!” She’s halfway to the door by the time she sing-songs that, leaving Annabeth with her nearly empty coffee mug and a cafe full of people giving her the stink eye.

“If you need an alibi, I can testify that you’ve been here pretty much all day.”

Coffee guy has a nice voice. Warm, smooth, just this side of deep without sounding like the trailer guy. It takes Annabeth an embarrassing amount of time to register that she’s thinking this because he’s standing right next to her, holding a coffee pot. It’s a good thing her self control is world renowned, because she uses all of it to keep from jumping out of her skin.

“What? I - no, she’s joking. We’re friends. Really.”

His grin is distractingly crooked. “I’m convinced.”

“I’m gonna kill her,” Annabeth mutters, hoping against hope that she’s not blushing, or something equally ridiculous.

“That’s probably not going to help in court.”

Her brain is - slowly - retreating out of coffee-and-study survival mode. A joke, she realises belatedly, and the rueful laugh escapes her before she can think to bite it back. And - something in coffee guy’s shoulders relaxes, just a little bit. Nervous, she thinks, and finds herself predisposed to like him. Smart boys know to think very carefully before approaching Annabeth Chase, and that’s the way she likes it.

She tucks an errant curl behind her ear. “I’ll plea insanity. Over-caffeination.” She glances down at her cup. “Actually, would you mind–?”

His face scrunches up with something like concern. “That’ll be your sixth cup.”

“Aren’t you the guy who’s been topping me up?”

“Grover seemed to think you might, I dunno, eat us or something if you ran out. I was protecting the good people of the cafe, but apparently cutting you off means stopping a murder.”

A groan escapes her, something like shame crawling up the back of her throat. Annabeth knows she’s got a serious case of resting bitch face (and she’ll fight anyone who suggests that’s a problem),but she doesn’t want the entire campus to be terrified of her.

Just wary.

“I’m not…actually some hyper-violent lady with a hair-trigger, honestly.”

“Oh hey no, I didn’t mean to–” And he’s groaning? He rubs the back of his neck, which is slowly turning red, and Annabeth starts to feel less off-kilter. “I’m bad at flirting.”

She’s definitely going to murder Piper. This is her fault somehow, Annabeth’s sure.

“Same,” she rushes out, before over-thinking can make this even messier. Her whole body feels energised, jittery, and she doesn’t think it’s the coffee. “Um. Just one more refill? To get me through the last bit of this chapter?”

“Wh - uh, right. Sure!” He squints at her. “You don’t mind?”

Annabeth rocks her mug from side to side, watching the dregs of her drink slosh from side to side. Black, no sugar. It seems like the safer option right now.

She takes a breath.

“Haven’t decided yet,” she says. “I’ll let you know when i’m done with this chapter.”

She’s not looking at him directly, but his grin is wide enough to be seen from space, let alone the corner of her eye.

“You got it,” he says happily, topping her mug off. He’s on the verge of pulling away when he pauses, like he’s remembered something. “It’s Percy, by the way. So you don’t have to keep calling me coffee guy.”

And then he’s gone, leaving Annabeth to seriously reconsider committing that murder.

Neighbour AU

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Laurent’s neighbours having a loud argument every weekend. Laurent does not pay an exorbitant amount of rent just so that he can be woken up at three in the morning every Saturday because Jokaste is angry at Damen again. It’s bad enough that he knows their names without having ever introduced himself.

And of course, the fights are always followed by even louder make-up sex, as if he needs a weekly reminder that he himself isn’t getting any.

Tonight, it seems, Damen has been locked out of his apartment.

prejudice in fantasy lit and the use of metaphor

reallybigshadowhunterstvfan said:

what can you say about making Simon a shadowhunter, Mrs Clare? it seemed odd to me that after a whole series of battling for equality between species/races, the downworlder had to become a shadowhunter. not only he basically ceased being a minority, he also became a part of a privileged community, and it just didn’t sit well with me.

Just for the record — I’m not Mrs. Clare; there is no Mr. Clare. I am married, but my pen name is not my husband’s property. :-)

I think this is a very interesting question that brings up a ton of issues, but there are some aspects of it I’d love to clarify — for instance, I am puzzled at calling Simon “the Downworlder.” Is he more a Downworlder than Magnus? Things like that actually are really important when discussing stories — if he were the only Downworlder in the story, that would be one discussion, but he isn’t, and therefore his story does not speak for the experience of all Downworlders or even a small fraction.

I am sorry you were surprised negatively by Simon’s story in TMI. Simon never wanted to be a vampire — he always hated it, and unlike Raphael and Lily, he never joined the community of vampires but instead spent all his time with Shadowhunters. Being a Daylighter had already changed him from being any kind of regular Downworlder, as did bearing the Mark of Cain: both made him even less “the Downworlder” and more of an anomaly. It also separated him from the other Downworlders, who treated him with distrust. In my experience, very few readers expected Simon to remain a vampire, given that it was something he never wanted or got used to, and that it was not his dream. More on that in a bit.

As to the question, to me the suggestion that Shadowhunters are “the privileged” and Dowworlders are as a block “the marginalized” — instead of being a complicated metaphor in which they sometimes but not always stand in for people who have had their rights curtailed —  overly simplifies the situation. It is an argument seems to ignore the fact that in fact, humans exist along axes of privilege and marginalization: that people can be privileged in one way and marginalized in another and that when Simon becomes first a Downworlder and then a mundane and then a Shadowhunter, he is not moving clearly from marginalization to privilege, but rather exchanging some types of privilege for others (he remains white as a Downworlder, and is a Daylighter), and exchanging some types of marginalization for others (the marginalization of being a Downworlder for the marginalization of being a mundane-born Shadowhunter and a Jew in a world where Shadowhunters are meant to have one religion).

Because the argument disclaims spectrums of privilege and marginalization, it also suggests that the world of the Shadowhunter Chronicles is one in which there are no gay or POC or trans people in existence; one in which there is no racism, homophobia, ableism, cis privilege, or bigotry against the neuroatypical. But that is both problematic erasure, and also not true of these books. Downworlders don’t stand in for people of color or LGBTQ+ people because people of color and LGBTQ+ people are in the books; they have not been subsumed into metaphor. (I know the showrunners said there was no homophobia in the Shadowhunter world, only warlock-phobia, but that’s the show, not the books, and it has a different world and world-building. I notice this is a question I get since the show came out, and I sometimes wonder if it’s a question of confusion between the two different universes? It’s easy for that to happen.)

Fantasy prejudice metaphors are complex and confusing and they rarely work as a one to one comparison (in other words, there is a difference between saying that this fantasy situation is reminiscent of this real world thing and saying this fantasy situation is exactly the same as this real world thing. For instance, one of the really interesting things about True Blood is that it made many deliberate parallels between “vampire rights” and GLBT+ rights — referring to vampires “coming out of the coffin” and “God Hates Fangs” on church signs. However, its vampires were also often violent predators who killed and ate people. The argument that Simon “basically ceased being a minority” (while, somehow, remaining Jewish) is similar to making an argument that True Blood was saying that gay people kill and eat their neighbors; I’m fairly sure in fact, they weren’t. They were reaching for a resonance — the echo of a real world situation that would give a layer of relatability and meaning to their points about difference. But they were not creating a literal “these things are the same” comparison or they wouldn’t have had vampires chewing off people’s heads.

So: are Downworlders discriminated against? Yes, sometimes, by Shadowhunters, who are a small specific group. Do they “stand in” for a specific minority group? No, they cannot, because they are accessible as a metaphor to any marginalized group or groups whose rights have been abridged. Also: the world at large does not discriminate against Downworlders because they do not know they exist, nor do they privilege Shadowhunters because they don’t know they exist either. It would be one thing if this was a high fantasy and Shadowhunters and Downworlders were all there was, but these books are set in our world, and the characters experience real-world bigotry, racism, homophobia etc. because of it.

Alec sighed. “Sorry to wreck your vision of our happy family. I know you want to think Dad’s fine with me being gay, but he’s not.”

“But if you don’t tell  me when people say things like that to you, or do things to hurt you, then how can I help you?” Simon could feel Isabelle’s agitation vibrating through her body. “How can I—”

“Iz,” Alec said tiredly. “It’s not like it’s one big bad thing. It’s a lot of little invisible things. When Magnus and I were traveling, and I’d call from the road, Dad never asked how he was. When I get up to talk in Clave meetings, no one listens, and I don’t know if that’s because I’m young or if it’s because of something else. I saw Mom talking to a friend about her grandchildren and the second I walked into the room they shut up. Irina Cartwright told me it was a pity no one would ever inherit my blue eyes now.” He shrugged and looked toward Magnus, who took a hand off the wheel for a moment to place it on Alec’s. “It’s not like a stab wound you can protect me from. It’s a million little paper cuts every day.”

 ***

“He hurt you. It was a long time ago, and I know he tried to make up for it, but—” Bat shrugged. “Maybe I’m not so forgiving.”

Maia exhaled. “Maybe I’m not either,” she said. “The town I grew up in, all these spoiled thin rich white girls, they made me feel like crap because I didn’t look like them. When I was six, my mom tried to throw me a Barbie-themed birthday party. They make a black Barbie, you know, but they don’t make any of the stuff that goes with her—party supplies and cake toppers and all that. So we had a party for me with a blonde doll as the theme, and all these blonde girls came, and they all giggled at me behind their hands.”

***

If we carry the theory through (Shadowhunters are THE privileged, Downworlders are THE marginalized) that means that Alec, as a gay Shadowhunter, is more privileged than Simon, a straight vampire. That Ty, who would be locked in a mental institution if the Clave discovered his autism, is privileged beyond white, rich, immortal and powerful Malcolm Fade. It’s saying that when Cristina encounters a wealthy, white, straight, misogynist male werewolf in Lady Midnight who tries to force sexual attention on her, she, a Latina woman, is the one who is the privileged character because she is a Shadowhunter and he is a Downworlder (though Sterling has arguably, given that he lives outside the supernatural world, never experienced a whit of prejudice because of it.) So I’m sure you can see where the problem lies.

It also erases Simon’s Judaism entirely. Stating without caveat that Simon has become “part of a privileged community” means ignoring the fact that Simon is Jewish; that he decides in Tales that he will continue to practice, and that he was the only Jewish protag written by two Jewish authors that I’m aware of having been on the bestseller lists last year. He didn’t think about being a vampire as he was preparing to transform — he never wanted to be one or consented to be one, nor was he part of the community, as Raphael constantly pointed out — though he does later think of having previously been a Downworlder when interacting with vampires and Shadowhunter prejudices. He thought of the important thing to him: his Judaism, which he both couldn’t and wouldn’t give up. To me it is personally painful to think that for any reader, Simon’s status as a vampire is more significant than his status as a practicing Jew.

I think sometimes it is possible to invest yourself so heavily in a metaphor that you forget the real world that surrounds the metaphor and the flexibility of metaphors in general. The Shadowhunter/Downworlder situation could stand in for the systemically privileged and marginalized of our world: sometimes it does. However it also can stand in for the way totalitarian governments abuse their own people: there are echoes in Shadowhunter history and current events of the Cambodian genocide, of Stalinist violence against intellectuals and resistors. There are also echoes of police brutality — what Shadowhunters have is the privilege of the Law, specifically: the Law is what allows them to enact bigotry in the name of justice, and when they abuse their jobs, it has resonances of the way police can abuse their jobs and use the privilege conferred on them by their authority to murder and abuse the helpless and marginalized. There are also echoes of the way soldiers carry out immoral orders given by superiors: the Shadowhunters are taught to be obedient to the Clave, and one of the ways we know who our Team Good is in any TSC series that they question that obedience. All of these are echoes and resonances: they are not saying that the Shadowhunters are the police, or the US military, or the Khmer Rouge; the resonances provide context and hopefully add a sense of realism to a situation that is fantastical in its nature.

(It’s also a wise idea not to so totally buy what the Shadowhunters are selling about themselves. They think they’re special and better and awesome, but the books constantly question and problematize that. Shadowhunters also pay a high high price for their runes and their sense of superiority: they die young and often and experience brutal constant violence and the pressures of a repressive society that allows for little divergence from an idealized norm.)

There are reasons that the Downworlders were never constructed to be a specific marginalized group and their situation was never meant to be limited in its relatability to one situation— for instance, it’s very hard to not look askance at the argument that Downworlders are meant to be specific “race” when you can become a Downworlder and then stop being one: when you can, as Simon does, change what kind of magical creature you are, because there is absolutely no correlation between that and what race or ethnicity means in our world.

So yes, Simon becomes a Shadowhunter: however, what I don’t see acknowledged here is not just his ethnicity and religion, but the fact that he becomes a Shadowhunter partly because he is aware of the prejudice of Shadowhunters, and fights against the bigotry they show not just to Downworlders but also to their own. He is part of Magnus and Alec’s Shadowhunter-Downworlder Alliance. He continues to work for change from within the system, arguably something almost no one else could do, because there are almost no other Downworlders who have become Shadowhunters. It is odd to me to consider Simon as simply ascending to a height of blithe privilege when he is fact much more like someone who has become a police officer in order to root out corruption and racism in the police, and brings his own knowledge of marginalization (which he still experiences) with him.

That is why Simon in Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy is constantly fighting and bending the rules in the name of his evolving social conscience, though I understand if you haven’t read TfTSA. One of the things about having had a flood of new readers enter fandom because of the TV show is that I’ve seen a lot of arguments based on the idea that TMI is the entire story of Downworlders and Shadowhunters, or the entire story of these characters. I see people talking about characters getting a happy or sad ending in TMI even when those characters go on to feature heavily in the sequel books and could by no reasonable account be considered to have any ending, happy or sad — unless you thought TMI were the only Shadowhunters books that existed rather than a chunk of a larger ongoing mythology. In no sense has Simon’s story ended: you have no idea if he will remain a Shadowhunter or not. Perhaps if you consider the fact that TMI is not a story that has ended for Simon, but rather one that continues, the fact that he has now been two magical species and might well move on to become another will sit less poorly with you? After all, this is not “after a whole series of battling for equality between species/races” this is “in the middle of a whole series of battling for equality between species/races.” Usually the middle of a story isn’t the place it’s best to draw all your conclusions from. :-)

Natural - Bill Skarsgard x Reader

Title: Natural

Pairing: Bill Skarsgard x Reader

Warnings: None

Summary: Imagine Bill seeing you interact with little Jackson on set and realizing he wants to have kids with you.

A/N: (Y/s/n) = Your Superhero Name, Y’all little Georgie is everything! And I’m not the one to easily find kids adorable or say I’d want a kid like that but oh dear!

“Are you sure you’ll be alright?” Bill asked with an adorable frown as he looked down at you and you chuckled, rolling your eyes.

“Bill you don’t have to worry about me, I already have an amazing company!” you grinned, turning to look at Jackson who was barely able to hold all of the comics in his small hands.

“You two will get along perfectly fine.” he breathed out with a small chuckle and you giggled after looking at your small fan and then back at your boyfriend.

“We already are.” you winked “Come on now, go be a big scary clown and don’t get all messy with the blood, children are not like eating chicken and you know it. Bones are bigger and there usually is a whole lot more blood, cause you practically eat them alive and yeah.” you leaned in and pecked his lips as he laughed at you.

“You’re so weird.” he made a funny face but still looked at you with adoration.

“But that’s why you love me.” you breathed out, your hands resting on his chest “And if you need any tips on red lipstick I am always here, baby.” you winked with a giggle and he chuckled.

“You are… amazing.” he breathed out, cupping your face before fully kissing you on the lips.

the guy: i’m all about harry styles, man. i didn’t think i’d like this guy, but i met him and he’s a charmer, man! i mean, beyond the fact that his cheekbones, i mean, are lethal. he goes out of his way to really show people that he’s, you know, a good guy. he’s just a regular guy and, you know, i’m not so sure what else is going on there, but that guy, he’s put on a charm offensive with dunkirk. he is funny, he is… during the press conference for dunkirk, the plane hangar in santa monica, he was one of the few people that was actually making christopher nolan laugh. that’s not easy to do, make christopher nolan laugh, by the way.

the woman: you told me that you tried

the guy: i made one, i made one joke, i attempted one joke with christopher nolan and i believe i got a smirk, which i think that’s as far as it was gonna go, one joke and then from here on out i’m serious. but, like, harry styles could just do anything. and he even started out the interview fixing my phone cause i was having an issue with the light and he was like helping me out which was a little awkward

the woman: wait, he was fixing your cellphone?

the guy: yeah, he was fixing my cellphone cause i had the light on cause it was dark but he was showing me how to do like the little light thingy. quite charming! and then my friend was showing him around all day and the next day he sent her the. best. bouquet. of flowers. just to say thank you and i was really impressed by that. this is a guy…

the woman: a stand up dude

the guy: yeah, he’s a stand up dude and a great actor. love you, harry

the woman: team harry!

the guy: i’m on team harry! i’m there

Once upon a time there was this show...

It’s about a girl named Emma Swan

Her parents, Snow White and Prince Charming

Emma’s son, Henry

The Evil queen, Regina

and Rumpelstiltskin

and all the people they met along the way

Snow and charming sent Emma from their world to ours to save her from a curse set by the Evil Queen

So that one day she could save everyone.

She got lost along the way. But thanks to Henry, the truest believer, and a little help from family and friends, she found her way. And she won.

But there was more to be done, more evil coming from fairy tale realms.

And Emma defeated those too. Along with a little help.

Along the way the evil queen became not quite so evil.

A crocodile learned to love.

The orphan girl from the Enchanted forest fell in love too.

And so many other characters, certainly too many to name, showed us a great many things, good or bad.

Once Upon a Time there was this show about an orphan girl from a story book. The story lost its way sometimes, as many stories often do. But like Emma, it found its way back.

“Believing in even the possibility of a happy ending is a very powerful thing”

Thank you for letting us hear the story you had to tell. It was nothing short of a great one.

Sincerely,

A Oncer

“Ava! C’mon, we can’t be late. School starts in half an hour! Say bye to Bucky and meet me at the car.” You shouted at your five-year-old. She loved Bucky Barnes, your boyfriend. She even started to call him “dad.”

Today was her first day of kindergarten. She was super excited. She wanted to make friends and she wanted to meet her nice teachers. You watched from the car as Bucky walked her to the front porch. He bent down to her pint-sized height, and gave her a big hug. He couldn’t take her to school because Steve needed him for training in the morning.

Ava made her way carefully down the stairs to your little car. She was big enough to get herself into the car seat. You missed the days where you had to help her. She was just getting so big and you knew today was going to be emotional for you. You wished Bucky could’ve been there with you. There wasn’t going to be anyone to pry you away from the school when Ava gets dropped off. Today was going to be hard for you.

“Oh, what fresh hell is that,” [Y/N] murmured under her breath as Peter drew out the schematics for her project. Raising a brow and tilting her head, she swore that Peter had just invented a new language. Running a hand through her hair, she shook her head. “I’m going to use the bathroom, I’ll be right back.” Picking herself up from Peter’s bedroom floor, she walked out the room.

“So, did you ask her yet?”

Peter yelped, jumping in his bones and then quickly turning towards his bedroom window to find Ned climbing through it. “Ned!? What the heck are you doing?!”

Nonchalantly, Ned struggled to get himself into his friend’s room. Cocking a brow, he motioned towards himself, “A little help would be nice.”

Unsure of what to do, Peter scrambled up from his spot on the floor and rushed to his friends aid. Yanking on him, he spoke low. “Seriously, dude, what are you doing here?!”

Ned snickered, “To make sure you don’t chicken out.”

Scrubbing his hands over his face, Peter groaned. “Why did you climb up the fire escape? Why not, I don’t know, ring the doorbell?”

Again, Ned snickered. “Would you have let me in? Besides, I know you don’t lock your window for quick Spidey emergencies.”

“Sh, sh, sh!” Peter growled. Now, he started to panic. “You need to leave,” pointing towards the cracked bedroom door, “[Y/N] will be back here any minute. What am I suppose to tell her when she finds you here? You can’t lie, you’ve almost told her I’m Spiderman on more than one occasions and I can’t lie to her because she knows I’m hiding something. And I definitely don’t want to ask her out with you standing here.”

Shrugging, Ned pondered. “Dunno.”

Smacking his forehead, “Oh god.”

“Hey, Peter? Can we switch it up and work on history? My brain hurts from all this engineer-” stopping mid sentence, she raised a brow at the sight of Peter and Ned awkwardly standing facing each other. “Ned? When did you get here?”

“Uh, just now!”

“Funny, I didn’t hear anyone knocking.” [Y/N] crossed her arms, her brow still raised. “What’s going on?”

Peter stumbled over his words, desperate to say something that wasn’t stupid. Ned on the other hand watched his friend walk himself in circles with sounds and noises that didn’t even sound human. Rolling his eyes, Ned patted Peter’s back hard.

“What Peter’s tryin’ to say is that he likes you, a lot.  A lot, a lot. Way more then Liz and trust me when I say that because the kid was obsessed with Liz. I mean who isn’t though, you know? She’s hot and really smart,” Ned winced, “not, not that you aren’t hot or smart [Y/N]. I just mean like, Peter was just really-”

“-enough, dude.” Peter muttered, slightly humiliated.

[Y/N] crossed her arms, amused by Peter’s bright red cheeks. Trying to ignore the fact that her own face was flushing, she chuckled. “I see, and what was your purpose to crash our study session?”

Ned smiled brightly, “To make sure he didn’t mess it up!”

Nodding, “And you think he would have been worse at admitting his feelings than what you just said?”

“Uh,” Ned thought, frowning as he went over what he had said. Looking over at Peter who looked a cross between annoyed and embarrassed. “Sorry, bro….”

Peter hid his face with his hands, “It’s alright, buddy.”

[Y/N] sucked in air and let it all back out as she thought of what to say next. This wasn’t how she pictured her night with Peter going at all. They had spent the last few weeks getting to know each other and helplessly trying to get her to understand basic mechanical engineering fundamentals. “Ned, can you give us a moment?”

Ned bowing his head, sulked out of the room.

Smiling, [Y/N] lightly nudged Peter towards his bed. Sitting down next to each other, she chuckled at the obvious mortified expression. “So,”

“So.” He repeated under his breath.

Feeling her cheeks get red, she looked down at her hands and whispered. “If it helps any, I kind of, sort of, like you too.”

Snapping his head up, “What? You do?”

Nodding, “Yeah.” Giving Peter a sideways glance, she smiled. “I didn’t plan on it but you kind of crept up on me.”

Peter stared at [Y/N] with wide eyes and an open grin. He didn’t know what to say, all he wanted to do was do a happy dance and fist pump the air a few times but he knew that if he did that, it would be even more embarrassing than what Ned had just done.

Clearing his throat, Peter looked down at his hands. “What do we do now?”

Running her hands down her legs and then standing up, she motioned towards the books that laid sprawled on the floor. “Well, we should get back to studying-”

“-Lame!” Ned uttered as he walked into the room with his arms crossed.

[Y/N] gently rolled her eyes as she sat down on the floor. “Wanna let me finish, Ned?”

Annoyingly motioning her hands for her to do so, he huffed. Muttering some words under his breath about them being idiots for studying.

Turning to Peter, she smiled. “As I was saying, we should continue to study and once we both pass, then we can decide what we’re going to do for our first date.”

Peter smiled back, “Uh, yeah, definitely.”

What?!” Ned exclaimed. Running a hand through his hair, he rose a brow. “What is wrong with you guys. You two basically professed your love and you’re going to focus on school?” Shaking his head, he groaned. “No, you two should be practicing kissing not practicing who took over Poland.”

Peter and [Y/N] exchanged looks before saying at the same time, “Get out, Ned.” Both of them laughed as he huffed and puffed out of Peter’s room.

As their laughter quieted down and they started to get back into the groove of where they were before Ned interrupted them, Peter piped up. “I’m not opposed to the kissing thing…”

Looking up from her history textbook, she quirked a brow. “How about this, if you ace your history test, I’ll consider it.”

Peter chuckled, “Oh, I’ll ace it, alright.”
