a horn of ale

“It gladdens me to know that Odin prepares for a feast. Soon I shall be drinking ale from curved horns. This hero that comes into Valhalla does not lament his death! I shall not enter Odin’s hall with fear. There I shall wait for my sons to join me. And when they do, I will bask in their tales of triumph. The Aesir will welcome me! My death comes without apology! And I welcome the valkyries to summon me home!“

Ragnar Lothbrok (Approx. 766 AD - 860 AD)

“It gladdens me to know that Baldr’s father (Odin) makes ready the benches for a banquet. Soon we shall be drinking ale from the curved horns. The champion who comes into Odin’s dwelling (Valhalla) does not lament his death. I shall not enter his hall with words of fear upon my lips. The Æsir will welcome me. Death comes without lamenting. Eager am I to depart. The Dísir summon me home, those whom Odin sends for me (Valkyries) from the halls of the Lord of Hosts. Gladly shall I drink ale in the high-seat with the Æsir. The days of my life are ended. I laugh as I die.”

The Al-mi’raj is a strange rabbit creature with a long horn atop its head. It is said to live on a mysterious island only known as Jezîrat al-Tennyn in the Indian Ocean. It was reported in Arabic poetry and in Marvels of Things Created and Miraculous Aspects of Things Existing by Zakariya Ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini from the 1200s. The horn of this yellow rabbit is said to be 2 feet long and black in color. The Al-mi’raj is quite aggressive and territorial - said to be able to kill things over two times its own size by stabbing its prey with its horn. It can eat creatures larger than it too, commonly being told to have a ravenous appetite. Lore says that only a powerful witch can calm the Al-mi’raj enough to move it away from villages.

This weekend at Draugar Vinlands we met in the snow and had almost full attendance. Keeping our momentum continuing from the last few weeks, and used plank boards we acquired to finish putting all the sides together of Ravnrhjem. In addition to the finished house, our own Ísgerðr delighted all of us by finishing our very own Raven banner. We couldn’t be happier to bear our very own standard, and are looking forward to showing it off in the coming years when we are able to attend festivals and events here and overseas. We celebrated a productive day with some light feasting and shared horns of ale.

Last weekend at Draugar Vinlands, we took full advantage of the weather and faced off against each other for hours. The heat was oppressive, so we shed our armor and fought with only our clothes as protection. After our warmup exercises and a few rounds of glima to loosen our muscles Rörik tried out his new practice Dane axe, which came as a devastating force to square off against. Every single hit came swift and hard.
After a few tiring hours, we retired to the shade of the trees and shared horns of ale as we talked and laughed the day away.

Midsummer-Blessings to all of you! Fill up your horns and mugs with ale, mead or wine, give a share to the gods and praise the warmth of the sun. Skol!

May the old ones watch your ways.
