a horn of ale

September — the first golden days of Autumn where the early morning air turns crisp, fruits are ripening in the hedgerows and the fragrant hop flowers hang in giant cascades in the hop gardens of England.

“It gladdens me to know that Odin prepares for a feast. Soon I shall be drinking ale from curved horns. This hero that comes into Valhalla does not lament his death! I shall not enter Odin’s hall with fear. There I shall wait for my sons to join me. And when they do, I will bask in their tales of triumph. The Aesir will welcome me! My death comes without apology! And I welcome the Valkyries to summon me home!”

“It gladdens me to know that Baldr’s father (Odin) makes ready the benches for a banquet. Soon we shall be drinking ale from the curved horns. The champion who comes into Odin’s dwelling (Valhalla) does not lament his death. I shall not enter his hall with words of fear upon my lips. The Æsir will welcome me. Death comes without lamenting. Eager am I to depart. The Dísir summon me home, those whom Odin sends for me (Valkyries) from the halls of the Lord of Hosts. Gladly shall I drink ale in the high-seat with the Æsir. The days of my life are ended. I laugh as I die.”

Just a Soldier

Pairing: Robb x Reader

Note: Someone liked when I did alternate Westeros concepts so I thought it would be interesting if Robb wasn’t born a Stark and the heir of Winterfell was actually a woman.

Summary: Robb is nothing but a soldier from Bear Island who has been dragged into the Battle of the Bastards to fight for House Stark. Y/N is the oldest child of Eddard and Catelyn Stark making her Queen in the North. With the help of her half-brother, their direwolves, and an army of Wildlings, she’s planning on taking back her home from Ramsay Bolton and try to find the happiness she lost years ago.

MASTERLIST / ASK

Winter was coming.

It was the phrase every Stark knew by heart. Though, the constant reminder from both her mother and father of their house words had easily become an annoyance as she was growing up. Yet, now that she was older, she understood their importance.

Not only that, but with the faintest of smiles she only reserved for herself in the privacy of her tent, she would silently admit to her father that he had been right all along.  The air was growing colder, the snow was falling harder, and the wolves seemed to howl more than usual at the soon to be Winter sky.

Winter wasn’t just coming anymore, winter was almost here; and that meant she needed to get home before the storms would start.

What once were just words had become the fuel that ignited the growing fire of rage that burned deep in her belly that tried effortlessly to break free and set the world aflame.

If only Arya could see her like this; she wouldn’t even recognize her big sister, but Y/N knew she would be proud. It had been years since she last saw her little sister, and if it wasn’t for Arya being Arya, maybe they could have been reunited by now. Brienne tried, she told Y/N the story of her, Arya, and The Hound. Y/N already knew how the story was going to end before Brienne had even made it there.

The point was, Y/N was far from what Arya could remember and she was ready to prove that. Of course, she was ready for a reunion with Bran and Rickon as well. After she had helped them escape off with Hodor and Osha, she had counted down the days when she’d see her boys again. For now though, Y/N had Jon and that was enough. Actually, it was way more than enough.

Requested by: @faithfulinmysins

After being locked in a room for days, she finally let me out. Mud in my hair and solid on my skirts, dirt under my fingernails and bruises littering my arms and hands. She ordered her guard to drop me at her feet. She looked down from her throne, careful not to let her crown slip from her hair, she locked eyes with someone on the other side of the room, and nodded. Then she stood. Her skirts falling behind her and following her with each stride.
She gestured for her maiden to move me so I was facing her and the crowd crammed in the hall. They wanted to see a witch hang. It didn’t matter that I was halfway innocent. It didn’t matter that I never hurt anyone or ever had the intention to hurt someone. All anyone card about was the evidence found in my hut. That’s all she cared about as well. And for the chance to prove that she is Queen.
“Kaia.” She starts. Looking at the chains around my ankles and hands. I could only imagine the state my hair was in if my dress was a dirty as it was. “I am Queen now, and I do not condone witchcraft - of any kind.” She cocks her head and locks eyes with Ivar. A deceiving look flashed in her eyes. “I do not appreciate that you would try to conjure Aslaug from the dead.” A collective gasp was heard from bystanders. “Or that you would try to get me killed, so your husband’s brother can become King.”
I tried to say something, but a sword was placed under my chin.
“Let her speak!” An array of voices cried from the crowd. Lagertha nodded, turning to face me again. The sword was taken away, and I was forced to get off my knees and stand.
“I was not conjuring the Queen.” My voice was hoarse and raspy. The other side of the room had to strain to hear anything. “I did not what I did in malice-”
“You admit to witchcraft?”
“Everyone knows that witches have been in my family for generations. We practice in the name of Frigg we are decedent’s from Odin!” I cry out in desperation. The chains feeling tighter by the second. “Your husband claimed he was a descendant from Odin also.”
Her expression turned cold at the sound of Ragnar’s existence. “My husband was bewitched by Aslaug. She cast a spell on him.”
“She did not!” Ivar roared from his seat. “He loved her more than he loved you and you were so blind you could not see it for what it was, but for witchcraft.”
Voices talking over one other caused an up roar and horns were thrown as ale spilt everywhere. Lagertha had to yell out for there to be silence. “I do not condone witchcraft. Not after what Aslaug has done to my city. To my home.” She pauses, looking at the walls of the halls and the throne she stole to call herself Queen. “There is evidence that you were conjuring Aslaug late into the night only last week. There was evidence when the walls were breached that witchcraft was involved,” she sits down on her throne, and clears her throat. Her eyes narrow and sink into my skin. “You and your husband, are nothing but sad children. You are hurt over Aslaug’s death. I understand. I am hurt over Ragnar’s death, but there are some things that I need to have made clear; I am Queen. I am in charge. The sons of Ragnar are not in line for the throne, but my son Bjorn. I will not let myself be put in danger by followers of Aslaug and their witchcraft. I will not let anyone conjure Aslaug to try and bring me down- and I will not let someone take my right and usurp my rule. From now on; anyone accused of witchcraft will be put on trial. Anyone proved guilty, will be strung up outside and made a lesson of.” An audible gasp left everyone’s lips and silence fell.
The eerie silence was broken by the heavy doors banging open. Floki stalks into the hall. He takes a standing by Ivar and crosses his arms. The seer shuffles in, his cloak covering his face and whispers leaving his lips. Everyone stayed silent.
“You accuse a girl of conjuring the dead?” His voice, though soft, bounces off the walls. “There was once a time when you asked me of life and death.” He points and bony finger at her. “No one should be on trial here.”

How to Conquer: A Feed You the Sky oneshot

And without further ado, here is today’s work! Thank you so much to @shesafreesoul for giving me the idea for this oneshot, and for encouraging me to re-write it when the first one wasn’t quite what it should have been! I’m so excited to post this haha. And so without further ado, I give you How to Conquer, which is set about 4-5ish years after Feed You the Sky will end. I hope you guys enjoy this little peek into the future!

Ivar’s eyes gleamed with excitement, seeming to hold the gaze of every person gathered to hear him speak. It was the first feast of the early spring, and this was the day the king would reveal his plans for the summer raiding season. Seeing him like this made Kára’s heart beat faster, the anticipation growing in her belly in proportion to the amount of ale she’d drunk tonight. She unconsciously tightened her grasp around the dark-haired girl in her lap, and the toddler squirmed, screeching her protest. Kára ran a gentle hand over the fine black hair of her daughter’s head, smiling as Ivar’s eyes found them.

He paused, taking a moment to drink in the sight of his wife and daughter. Her auburn hair in a simple braid over one shoulder, hazel eyes boring into his as she stroked the baby’s hair, Ivar wondered—as he had every day since she stormed into his hall—what he had done to deserve such favor. The baby would reach her third summer soon; she was all huge blue eyes and black hair, fine and soft as raw silk. He stuck his tongue out at her and was rewarded by a shrill giggle.

The grin he shot his little family was like the sun breaking through the clouds, and then he was all business once again, a king always ready for battle. He took a deep drag from his drinking horn, letting the anticipation in the hall build. He set the cup down deliberately, dragged the back of his hand across his mouth. His eyes traveled from one man to the next, the ones that fought beside him since he had taken his father’s throne, and the ones who had always remained steadfastly loyal to his wife. He knew it warmed her to see them sitting together in one hall, sharing stories and ale like lifelong friends.

He took another moment to watch her watching them, the sum of all their kingdom gathered here before them: the bold fighting men and their wives, children rolling around scuffling under the tables while their parents laughed and drank. Ivar saw the quiet pride in his wife’s eyes, and in that moment he promised himself he would bring more men to this hall after this raid, expand their army and make her even more proud.

“This summer,” he thundered, immediately silencing all talk in the hall. He let the tense quiet grow for a moment before shattering it with another roar, “we raid north! Ubbe will lead the boats up the coast, to the lands of Jarl Hastein, and I will lead our army through the pass in the mountains. Since he will have spies along the coast, we must make that our smaller force. Let him think we are weak and will be easily defeated.” He paused, glancing around, a wolfish grin spreading slowly across his pouty lips. “But we are not weak!” The words were a menacing growl, sending shivers down Kára’s spine, awakening a heat between her thighs. She could barely contain herself when he was in this mood.

“I will lead the army through the mountain pass, because it will be lightly defended. We will burn every village and farm we find, sparing them only if they swear loyalty to me and my queen.” He shot the queen in question a scorching look, the heat in his blue eyes threatening to burn her from the space between their thrones. “And then we will meet outside the town of Hed, Hastein’s stronghold, and there crush him! His lands and armies shall become ours, and you will all come home with silver! I swear it to you right now, Ivar the Boneless has no more need of riches! All I need is the head of Hastein, to show to the world that we are to be feared. All riches gained shall be split evenly between the fighting men and their families.”

He sat back against his ornately carved throne, the one he had won from Kára’s father, as the hall erupted into cheers. Kára'ssmall hand found his and he twined his fingers with hers automatically, bringing her hand to his mouth and pressing a kiss to her knuckles. She leaned in closer to him, her breath hot on his cheek, “You are brilliant as always, Ivar.”

He chuckled, slowly dragging his blue eyes over her flushed cheeks. He knew what she thought of his mind. “Is that so, min elskede? How brilliant do you think me?”

“The most brilliant man I have ever met,” she answered with no hesitation. “I can show you how brilliant I think you are.”

“And how will you do that, my Valkyrie?” He stroked his thumb gently over the back of her hand and felt her shiver at the light touch. Ivar couldn’t stop the slow smirk. He loved seeing the way he made her feel. He had been worried, at the start of their marriage, that she would come to find him unappealing. That his legs would overshadow his mind, and she would realize she had been foolish to tie herself to a useless cripple.

They have been married for a few years now, and this doubt is just finally starting to die. Every time he hears her moan his name, every time her hips rise up to meet his, every slow kiss and every word of praise that falls from her lips weakens that doubt further, and he knows that soon it will be nothing but a memory. But for now, at least, he still needs the proof of her love, still needs to hear her tell him how wonderful he is to her.

She settles herself on the arm of her throne, the toddler banging on the table with her little fists as her uncle Ubbe makes silly faces at her across the table. “I will begin by telling you how flawless your plan is, as always. Then I will feel your chest and arms and back, running my hands over your body to feel how strong you are. After I am satisfied you are strong enough, I will tell you how your sword-arm, like your strategies, will never fail. What happens next, husband, is entirely your decision.” She raises her brows, smiling at him, and he feels himself hardening at the hungry look on her face.

“How is it my decision, Kára?” His voice is husky with lust, and it only widens her smile.

“It depends on whether or not you will let me conquer you. To demonstrate how best to conquer Hastein’s lands.”

Ivar gripped his chair so tightly his knuckles turned white. He saw his wife’s eyes slide to his hands and knew she was imaging them clenching the furs on their bed as she rode him. Her breathing was a little faster than normal now, and he had to close his eyes for just a moment, he was so overwhelmed by her in the flickering glow of the fire.

When he opened them, the chair beside him was empty and his wife was placing their daughter in his lap. The tiny girl snuggled against his chest with a content sigh, popping a thumb into her mouth. “Wh-where are you going?” Ivar sputtered at Kára.

She smiled down at him, eyes glinting with mischief, and leaned down low to whisper in his ear. He was no fool, and caught the way she threw her shoulders back to bare the swell of her breasts right before his eyes, his wild little woman. “You don’t really expect me to just sit here, do you? If I don’t do something, I’m going to soak through my dress.”

He watched her walk away, slender hips swaying beneath her skirts, and the hardness in his trousers became nearly painful. Curse that woman, he had to have her. “Ubbe!” His voice was sharper than he meant, and his brother looked up immediately. “Come take Ingrid, I have urgent matters to attend.” Ubbe saw the queen’s empty throne and rolled his eyes as he reached across the table to collect his niece.

“Come sit with me, little Ingrid, and maybe mama and papa will give you a little brother,” Ubbe crooned, settling the toddler in his lap and ripping her a small bite of chicken. Ivar dropped hastily from his throne and dragged himself out of the hall as quickly as he could. Ubbe wasn’t the only one who noticed Kára’s empty throne and Ivar’s hasty departure; the cheers of warriors and clinking of ale horns followed him through the door.

It was not far to their bedchamber and she didn’t have too much of a head start, so Ivar hoped she hadn’t gotten too far without him. He finally pushed open the door and closed it quickly behind him as he entered the room. She lay sprawled on the bed, eyes closed and auburn hair spreading around her like a wildfire. Her dress was a heap on the floor, and one of her fingers teased lightly at the center of her pleasure. Her breath caught in a hitch and released in a breathy moan of his name, and finally he alerted her to his presence.

“Yes, min elskede?” He pulled himself up onto the bed beside her, his large, blunt fingers taking the place of hers. He moaned, feeling the wetness that was waiting for him. “Is this what the thought of me does to you, wife?”

She didn’t answer, only pressed herself against the heel of his hand. He reached down to kiss her. She tasted faintly of ale, and he sucked her tongue into his mouth and nipped it gently. And then she was on him like a flood, and he was all too willing to drown. She pinned him beneath her, careless hands ripping his clothing off. When he was bare before her she looked down at him, chest heaving and pink lips parted. “Let me show you how to conquer.” Her hands were everywhere, kneading and stroking his skin, feeling the taut strength of his rippling muscles, and he was powerless beneath her onslaught.

“You start by weakening the defenses,” she explained, tongue and teeth harrying him, nipping and teasing wherever she pleased—his collarbones, inner thighs, his nipples, the palms of his hands. Her tongue dragged slowly across his navel and down, before circling his tip in one quick stroke. “Sometimes they call for words, for an offering of peace.” She met his eyes.”Be ruthless, Ivar.”

And then he was in her mouth, felt her take him in until he hit the back of her throat and started sucking. She bobbed along his length, occasionally dragging her tongue along him, and as the precum started to drip into her mouth, she suddenly released his cock with a pop. “After the time for words is over begins the fighting. In this, too, show no mercy.”

She threw her leg over him and lined her entrance up with his manhood, and then he was held tight in the warm wetness of her core, and finally he began to move. He bucked his hips up against her, fingers digging into her thighs, and she threw her head back with a cry of release similar to one he’d heard her make before she took a life.

As he came deep inside her and she collapsed down on him, he thought—not for the first time—that this wild little woman was, in fact, his Valkyrie. She was the one who had carried him home, not to Valhalla, but to a hall they shared together. He locked his hand behind her head, tangling his fingers in the fiery silk of her hair, and drank in the taste of her kiss. He thought she must be even sweeter than the mead they drank in Odin’s hall.

Giving Tree: Chapter 2

(Giving Tree: Chapter 1)

Ed had dragged Al’s soul out from the gate, and he did it at the price of his right arm. If his right arm could pull Al out, so could his left arm. So could his other leg, up to the mid thigh. As well as four or five ribs. Some non-vital organs. His sight. His hearing… It was simple math, and Ed had calculated down, to his every last body part, just how many times he could save Al.

Exactly two trains ran daily between Central Station and East Station, the 10:30 am and the 3:30 pm. The East Station arrival time was easy enough to calculate, since the route from Central to East took exactly four hours to cover. There was a rumor which claimed the route used to take 3 hours, 57 minutes exactly, until they added Resembool as the third-to-last stop. Very few people ever got on at that stop, and no one ever got off. Most commuters just watched those open doors, inhaling the heady drafts of sheep and pastures, wondering why the train even bothered. On very rare occasion, some had the treat of watching the Fullmetal Alchemist get off at just that stop, arm slung up and head in bandages, with his armor suited younger brother toting behind. He was a four leaf clover to them, a black swan of sorts, the one mythical reason the train ever stopped in Resembool. The station was added for the Fullmetal Alchemist specifically, so the rumor went.

On June 3rd, 3:28 pm, Edward Elric stood near the edge of the Central Station train tracks, watching the approaching headlights as they ripped through the mid-afternoon fog. It was draining to stand, more than he realized, and so waited for the train to pull in with a heavy-hearted relief. Now where was…

“Al!” Ed angled his head over his shoulder. The one suit of armor in the whole station jumped, public telephone pressed against his cheek. “Train’s here! Come on.”

“But I—just another minute. Winry and Granny haven’t picked up. I’m going to try calling them once more.”

“We don’t have another minute Al. Train’s here. We’ll just tell them when we get there, it’s not big deal. Not like we’ve ever called ahead any other time.”

“But don’t you think…this is…”

“It’s fine, Al. …Really. Come get on the train.”

The screeching of stopping tires punctuated Ed’s sentence. The train rested, huffed, let off a quick honk of its horn before the attendants inside each compartment hauled the doors open. Al watched as Ed eyed the openings with urgency. And it was so unlike him—normally, they pushed train departure to the last second. Normally they chased after it, wheels cranking and gaining speed. They’d hop the rails and sling their luggage over, and one arm extended they’d catch each other, catch whoever had leapt second.

One arm extended…

Trigger warnings: Ivar is a man now and he’s so confident. Be prepared. It will be the death of me.

When Kára entered the great hall, Ivar beckoned to her from his seat at the high table. She steeled herself against the nerves fluttering in her belly and went to him with all the courage she could muster. She had awoken this morning expecting her death at his hands, and instead he offered her a life greater than she dared hope for. Ivar smiled at her, a surprisingly tender expression on his hard face, and scooted to the side so she could share his bench. “I believe the custom in this land is that a man and his wife-to-be may share a plate and drinking horn at meals?” He asked sweetly.

He had done his research on her home, after all. She sat beside him, back straight as a sword, and gave a polite nod to Ubbe. He nodded back, and Kára looked around. There were only a few people in the hall right now, some servants and warriors making a quick meal before they retired for the night or took up their watches. “That is true,” she admitted, a strange excitement thrilling through her at the thought.

“Then we will share. We should show that we are unified, if we are to bring our kingdoms together smoothly,” Ivar pointed out. She couldn’t argue with that sound logic, and besides Ivar was already cutting a bite of meat for her from his plate. She opened her mouth as he presented it to her on the tip of his small eating-knife. She was a little surprised to find he had selected a tender cut for her, and his self-satisfied grin at surprising her sent a wave of warmth up her cheeks. “You are being quiet tonight. From what I have seen so far, this is unlike you.”

He fed her another piece of meat before running the point of his knife down the slope of her nose. She shivered, closing her eyes, and he burned at the expression on her face—part shock, part desire, and more than a little hope. The last nearly undid him, coming from one as strong as her. Part of him still thought her immortal, immune to such weaknesses as hope.

She chewed slowly to gather her thoughts, took a sip when he offered her his drinking horn. It was plain ale tonight, though freshly brewed, and she caught his wrist, bringing the horn to her lips again. “I am only thinking of how to address the issues we may face during our marriage.” She squeezed lightly before releasing him.

“Oh?” Ivar’s blue eyes sparkled with mischief, the curve of his lips suggestive as he smiled at her. His forearm burned where she had touched it, he could feel her like a brand hot from the forge.“I can already think of a few good ways to fix any disagreements.” Ubbe choked on his bread and Ivar pounded his back quickly, giving him an exasperated look. Even Kára had to smile, nervous as she was to have this conversation, weak as Ivar made her feel. She had to be strong, to help her people and be a wife worthy of a man of Ivar’s status. When she was younger, she’d believed she would marry some petty king, a mere peace cow to ensure the safety of her aging father’s kingdom.

But Ivar was a conqueror, a warrior through and through. Her husband-to-be both thrilled and terrified her, but she would prove to him she was worthy of being the queen of a great kingdom. He was known and feared not only in the northern lands, but in the lands to the south as well. She hoped he would take her there one day, she had always wanted to raid those rich lands. Her father would never allow it, much as she asked. The thought of him sent a stab through her gut, and she pulled herself from her thoughts and fixed Ivar with a level, cool gaze. “How are we to go about unifying our kingdoms? How will we rule together? Will we continue to raid and conquer other lands? What of my bride-price? It should go to me, in the absence of my father.” She paused, wanting to look away but refusing. “And why are you being so kind to me? I did not expect this of you.”

Ivar rested back against his chair, only leaning forward to cut her a slice of bread from the loaf on the table when he saw her looking at it. “The most important question first, then. You must know why I am being kind to you, Kára, don’t be dense.” He smiled at her glare, reaching his thumb to smooth the lines between her brows. His touch was warm and gentle, and she leaned into it. His fingers traveled from her forehead to her hair, hanging in auburn waves to her waist. It was so soft and thick against his calloused fingers that he sighed. He kept stroking the deep red locks as he spoke, trying to convey through his touch the sincerity in his words. “The gods have crafted us for each other; surely you must feel it? I am treating you as an equal because you are the only person on all Midgaard that I have ever believed to be my equal.” His smile became ironic, teasing, as he took his hand from her hair to offer her another bite of meat. “Although all those questions were almost enough to make me doubt my instinct.”

Her voice was acidic, but Ivar found her even lovelier when she was angry. “Of course the gods saw fit to craft an arrogant prick for my husband.” Ivar’s eyes blazed as Kára turned the full force of her smile on him, reaching her hand to him with a confidence she did not truly feel. He closed his eyes as she ran her fingers along his high cheekbone, tracing a faint scar there.

He turned his head suddenly to plant a soft kiss on her palm, and she blushed like the virgin she was as she withdrew from him. “But of course you are to be my husband. I thought you would bring me death, but you have given me life instead. You are not Valhalla, but certainly you will be my home.” She turned businesslike again, cursing herself for showing him the power he held over her. “But what of my other questions?”

Ivar offered her another bite of meat, and as she chewed he answered, “We will rule jointly. There are tales of kings and queens doing so. As I said, you are my equal and I will always treat you as such.” Ivar was unaccustomed to showing this much weakness, it made him want to squirm like a child in trouble. He must convince her, though. She had to know she’d held his heart from the moment he saw her, and he wanted nothing more than her heart in return. Even more than glory, more than the blood of his enemies and more than Valhalla, he craved the love of this wild, stormy woman. There could be no life without her, and no death either. Without her, he would spend his days an empty shell, a forlorn ghost trapped somewhere between this world and the next.

“As we will be joined before the gods, so will our kingdoms be joined. There shall not be one without the other, just as from this day forward, there is no Ivar without Kára.” His words stirred something strange in her, a sudden lightening behind her breastbone. She took the drinking horn to hide the shaking of her hands. This was not a tender man; he was ruthless and clever. His blue eyes were wide and sincere, though, as he regarded her. She found herself wanting to trust him, wanting to drown in those eyes like the sea, even as part of her screamed to swim for the shore. She was trapped in the rip tide of his voice.

“I wish to keep raiding and conquering, and so I shall. You will of course accompany me, if that is your wish, or you will stay behind and rule for both of us. You are a free woman and a queen, you are able to make your own choices. You have shown a great deal of wisdom and courage. I admire that in any man, and even more so in my wife. The people here love you and speak well of you. You will act as you see fit. And as for your bride-price, I have something in mind, and yes, it will of course go to you.”

He paused, looking straight at her with a predatory smile. “Ships, Kára, I will give you ships and men to lead. And for your morning-gift, we will sail them. You will choose the place for our raid. Frankia, maybe, or Northumbria? The wild Irish islands? I will deny you nothing.” He saw the pleased smile creeping over her face, the excitement in her hazel eyes, and knew he had offered the perfect thing for her. Yes, she was his equal in every way, a woman who understood the deepest desires of his heart.

She leaned forward to place a chaste kiss on his lips, tasting lightly of ale, and he longed only to devour her as he had this morning, but he held himself back despite the urgency of his desire. In just a few days time, he would show her how deep she was in his heart.
