Friendship Comes First:  What (Good) Fanfiction Can Teach Us About the Romantic Subplot.

I love all forms of storytelling:  television, books, movies, you name it.  As long as it’s quality, its ripe for the picking.

It’s so easy for me to become engrossed in the lives and psychologies of fictitious characters, to care for them as though they’re people I really know.  Which, on some metaphysical level, I suppose is true, but that’s a topic for another essay.

However, in the midst of all my possibly Asperger’s-fueled hyper-fixation and nerdery, there’s one inevitable aspect of seemingly every plot to which I will almost always role my eyes and click the fast-forward button:  the goddamned romantic subplot.

So many times have I seen the exact same variation of romantic love between fifty homogeneous couples, and each time, I failed to see the appeal:  in books, the smirking, obnoxious male love interest will woo the object of his desire through flagrant disrespect, the same toned bodies will copulate furiously on my television screens (typically at the exact same moment my parents or small siblings will walk into the room), the same vapid, flirtatious stares and generic dialogue will be exchanged.

But where’s the basis for it?  Yes, these people are stressed to be attracted to one another to the point of obnoxiousness, but do they even like each other as individuals?  Are they even friends?  Is there any three-dimensionality to their relationship besides sizing each other up and deciding to bump uglies?

Simply and also sadly, the answer is very rarely.  And so, it seemed to me that romance was not my cup of tea, both in the fictitious world and out of it.  Or so it seemed.

Because it was then, at approximately seventeen, that I discovered a remarkable phenomenon that would change my life forever:  fanfiction.

Never before had I been so enraptured in the relationships of fictional characters, and I was baffled as to why.  Yes, I’ve read a tremendous deal of fanfiction that is, in fact, book quality, but as an avid bibliophile, I was perplexed as to why I’d never been so captivated by the romantic endeavors of a published author as I was by the passion-projects of writers not much older than I was.

After a lot of time, careful consideration, and the illuminating words of some of my fellow bloggers, however, I believe I can finally put words as to why.

1.  Give your characters a narrative purpose (besides being The Love Interest.)

Do you ever wonder what inspires Supernatural fans to tirelessly churn out fics about their favorite human-on-angel pairing?  I have, and this is someone who’s a proud proponent of the stuff.

The sheer magnitude of free literature available, constantly repositing the pair in all manor of situations and walks of life, is absolutely baffling, and undeniably impressive.  Indeed, some of the best works of romantic literature – and yes, I do consider fanfiction to be a form of literature – I have ever come across were starring none other than this specific pairing:  from the infamous Twist and Shout (which I don’t recommend if you ever want to listen to Elvis Presley music, visit a beach, or feel joy ever again) to the charming Have Love, Will Travel (probably my personal favorite), some truly beautiful love stories have blossomed from a pairing that has never even been confirmed onscreen to have romantic connotations.

Perhaps just as baffling is the other end of the spectrum:  Lisa Braeden.  Lisa, for those unfamiliar, is basically posited as the love of Dean’s life, with whom he lived for a year before being forced to give up his dream of a family life and return to full-time demon busting.  They’ve canonically kissed, had sex, shared a bed, and everything typically associated with an onscreen couple.

Yet comparatively no fanworks exist about them.  When Lisa does appear in a fic, she is usual Castiel’s rival for Dean’s affections, or simply a hapless bystander.

Why is this?  Well, a disillusioned observer might point to straight women’s apparent predilection towards fetishizing male homosexuality (I, for the record, am not straight myself;  I’m a proud bisexual who, thus far, has only dated women.)  I’m inclined to retort that this isn’t giving female fans nearly enough credit.

For starters, remove all context from each relationship and examine them with a critical eye:  on the one hand, you have Castiel, Dean’s angelic savior from forty years in perdition.  Castiel is clearly fascinated with Dean, appearing in his bedroom, somewhat suggestively (advertently or otherwise) inquiring about his dreams, watching him sleep, routinely invading his personal space, and ultimately rebelling against heaven in accordance with Dean’s wishes.

On the other hand, you have Lisa, a perfectly nice character who’s introduced as “the bendiest weekend of (Dean’s) life” and…well, that’s about it.  She’s later shown as a sort of amalgamation of Dean’s subconscious desire for a mother figure and normal life, but she, as a character, remains somewhat underdeveloped and hollow.

You can’t expect fans to hold the two relationships to the same caliber and then cry internalized misogyny and fetishization of gay and bisexual men when they don’t.

The fact of the matter is, onscreen “friendships” are typically much more developed, much more three-dimensional, and much more ideal of what a truly epic romantic plot should be.  A character with a clear place in the narrative and three dimensional characterization all their own will almost always be more charismatic than a character who’s introduced as exclusively The Love Interest.

This is not to say that what makes fanfiction so great is that it sexualizes or romanticizes friendship.  In fact, I’m inclined to believe it’s the other way around.

Which brings me to my next point…

2.  Make sure your characters are friends.

It’s a romance for the ages.  A love like no other.  They’re soulmates, yin and yang, a match made in the stars.

But do they enjoy each other’s company?  Laugh at each other’s jokes?  Take part in each other’s interests?  Are they even friends?

The sad fact of the matter is, romance and erotica are, as a whole, starved for values of friendship and camaraderie.

This is something I realized only after my love of fanfiction took root, when I tried to return to my normal sources of adult entertainment (romance, erotica, and porn) and found them, by comparison, almost bafflingly lacking in warmth and camaraderie.

What I think makes fanfiction so addictive is the fact that it’s built upon the established relationships of two or more characters (the Onceler and company notwithstanding) who, typically, care for one another as friends and compatriots.

Look at some of the internet’s favorite pairings:  Dean Winchester and Castiel remain a classic.  Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers are always crowd-pleasers.  Kara Denvers and Lena Luthor are seeing a rise in popularity.  We all know Sherlock has somewhat fallen from grace, but the union of its two main characters still retains a devoted following.

This is no accident:  despite lacking onscreen confirmation, these characters have proven themselves to care for one another as more than objects of their sexual desire.  They’re friends, with relationships based in loyalty and warmth that are, unfortunately, sorely lacking in typical fictional romances.

Once you get a taste of this brand of friendship-infused romance, in fanfiction or otherwise, it’s hard to go back.

This isn’t just limited to quote-unquote “fanon” couples, either:  couples such as Mulder and Scully, Bones and Booth, Yuuri and Victor, and Ladybug and Chat Noir can all attribute their popularity to this strong basis in friendship, camaraderie, and mutual respect.

This is also the leading cause as to why the formerly booming 50 Shades franchise, and other arguably sexist, abusive dynamics, are struggling at the box office.

Which reminds me…

3.  Make sure your characters are equals.

Unless you’re writing a Lolita-esque social commentary, it’s probably your best bet to keep your characters on fairly equal ground.

I mean this in every sense of the word, too:  I have a difficult time getting invested in a romance when there’s a pretty blatant power imbalance, which oftentimes occurs due to the implicit sexism of the entertainment industry.

Disproportionately young actresses are assigned as love interests to much older men, such as Emma Watson’s twenty-something-year-old character lusting over a man almost twenty years her senior in Irrational Man.

Physically mediocre or average-looking male characters are frequently pared with stunningly beautiful women who like them because they’re “nice,” fueling the existing mentality of all self-proclaimed “nice guys” who think society owes them a hot girl.

Furthermore, @popculturedetective just released an amazing video explaining the “Born Sexy Yesterday” trope, in which hopelessly naive, beautiful women are seen swooning over their more savvy male lovers.  (Found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=0thpEyEwi80)

I love Splash and the Fifth Element as much as anybody, but both films incorporate all these tropes in ample proportions, and it’s frankly ridiculous. (On the topic of Splash, however, I’m greatly looking forward to a subversion of this trope in its remake, starring Channing Tatum as the titular merman and Julianne Belle as his human love interest.)

On the other hand, you have fanfiction.  I’ve read numerous essays professing that fanfiction is becoming increasingly popular due to the fact that same-sex relationships tend to be implicitly devoid of these sex-based imbalances, and I’m inclined to agree.

However, I’ve read others stating that male-male pairings tend to be so popular because male characters are typically more well-developed by writers, making it perfectly understandable that fans would be more invested in a possible romance between two characters of equal multidimensionality (see point 1) than one that is sorrowfully underdeveloped.  I’m inclined to think that this theory is even more on point.

Because look at some of the successful onscreen relationships I listed prior:  we root for Bones and Booth’s inevitable union the same way we swoon over slowburn fanfiction, delighting in Mulder and Scully’s banter and craving their interaction.

These are, in my opinion, some examples of straight couples done right, because they’re portrayed as friends (see the previous point), and just as importantly, as equals.

Last, but certainly not least, the male characters in both pairings are depicted as having nothing but respect for their female compatriots, depending on their intellectual know how and not being ashamed to say so.

A more contemporary example that gets this wrong?  Well, not to offend any fans of the pairing, but Mon-El and Kara, a la Supergirl.  Mon-El was, at the beginnings of his arc, consistently disrespectful towards Kara, putting her down and insulting her in the very same episodes in which her female compatriot – Lena Luthor – is shown vocally admiring and praising her.

Mon-El has since improved on his behavior, but the damage is done:  I still have a difficult time seeing him as a likeable character, much less a suitable love interest for my beloved Kara.

These are just a few recommendations, based on the ways in which my somewhat obsessive love of transformative literature (i.e. good fanfiction) have helped me as a writer and helped me view the implicit problems with mainstream romance with a more discerning and critical eye.

Here, I could provide a counterpoint with the recurring problems I’ve noticed in fanfiction, or I could go into some recomendations for writing explicitly gay and lesbian relationships.  Both of these, however, are topics worthy of another essay.

Disclaimer:  I am assuming that any and all readers are trying for an enjoyable, healthy romantic subplot with equally charismatic, consenting, and likable characters.  Dysfunctionality can be just as interesting from a literary standpoint, but again, this is a topic for another essay.

There will be essays like this published at least once every other week, so be sure to follow my blog and stay tuned for future writing advice and observations!

Day 9 - How to avoid Jahannam

The purpose of this dunya is a test. “Whoever manages to save himself from the fire of hell, and is caused to enter Jannah. That is the one that has truly achieved success.”

Ten methods from the Quran and Sunnah, that can be used to save yourself from the hellfire.

  1. Tawbah (Repentence): Tawbah is an action of the heart, literally meaning “to return yourself to Allah (swt),” because a sin distances you from Him. No sin can withstand Tawbah, Tawbah forgives everything and Allah can forgive all sins, but only if you submit to him. The Prophet  said, “The one who repents from sin is like the one who never sinned.” [Ibn Maja (3240)]  When Allah (swt) created humans, the angels asked him, “Why would you create an inferior species that sins? We are perfect and sinless.” Allah (swt) wanted to reveal his merciful side, that he will forgive even those who sin
    Conditions for repentance:
    - Leaving the sin
    - Remorse over having committed the sin
    - Resolve never to return to the sin
  2. Istigfar (Verbal Repentance): The verbal act of tawbah. Tawbah is a state of mind and heart, while istigfar is manifesting tawbah on your tongue. The most common way is to say “Astagfirullah,” meaning “I seek forgiveness from Allah (swt). Make it a habit to say Astagfirullah100 times throughout your day.
  3. Good deeds: Your good deeds will cancel out your bad deeds. Pray, help others, and give charity as much as you can.
  4. The Dua of others: You can be saved from Jahannam when others make dua for you, especially by your name, but even generically as well. It is a command of Allah to seek forgiveness for all of your fellow believers. We pray for others, so that inshAllah, Allah (swt) will cause them to pray for us.
  5. Hardships: Every physical and emotional pain you suffer will dissolve your sins. Allah (swt) is so merciful and understanding of our pain in this dunya. That is why we must say Alhamdulillah for any suffering, because it is to rid us of our sins. Allah is testing you, so that your sins will be forgiven.
  6. Punishment of the Grave: For major sinners and those who deserve Jahannam, Allah (swt) will punish you in the grave, so that you do not go to Jahannam. Those are punished in the grave, will not know that it is their punishment. They will think that after the grave, they will go to Jahnnam. However, Allah (swt) is the most merciful and sends you to the gates of Jannah on judgement day.
  7. Punishment of Judgement Day: The day of Judgement will not be easy except for those who Allah made it easy for. Allah (swt) will use the suffering of Qiyamah to forgive the major sinners of the suffering in Jahannam.
  8. Good deeds gifted by others: The good deeds gifted by the living to the deceased. A son/daughter, relative, or friend, giving charity in your name, making dua for you, reading the Quran and asking Allah to pass all of the rewards to you. This is why it is important to help and benefit others as much as you can when your alive, because in return those people will remember you and think of you even more when your dead. Your friend will remember, “He gave me a loan last month, may Allah forgive him.” That one sentence will help you when you most need it. Narrated from Abu Hurairah that, “A man said to the Prophet ﷺ, “My father died leaving wealth but no will. Would he be pardoned if we gave charity on his behalf?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Yes.” Let people remember you only for good and inshAllah they will ask Allah to forgive you.
  9. Intercession of the Prophet : Make dua and say, “O Allah make me amongst those whom the Prophet makes Shafa’a (intercession) for.” Whoever gets it, will go to Jannah. The Prophet said whoever makes this dua sincerely, he will be the Shafa’a for on the day of judgement.
  10. Mercy of Allah: The pure, undeserved mercy that Allah (swt) gives to whom ever he chooses. There will be millions who deserve Jahannam, however for some he will still have the utmost of mercy. Allah has stored 99 to use on Yaumul Qiyamah. The purest Rahma of Allah.

Request:  Reader is close to the glee club and has gone to school with them since freshman year) Sebastian left his phone at the Lima Bean and someone from the glee club found it. They look through it to see pics of reader and Seb like kissing each other, hugging and cute pics that you would have of your significant other. They ask him about it only to find him and reader talking about date plans and the glee Club finding out when he realizes that he left his phone at the Lima Bean. The entire glee club enters the room and tells them the gig’s up. They confess and the glee club accepts it. - @irony-is-my-life

Pairing: Sebastian Smythe x Reader

Notes: So I made a few changes. I hope you don’t mind. It’s late and not very well written. I’m sorry if it’s not your favorite. You can always request another one, though. My ask is always open. Also everyone’s a lil bit OOC.

Bells jingled and laughter poured into the local cafe called the Lima Bean. “And then Finn tripped over his books and slid down the hall!” Rachel was giggling through her retelling of an incident with an unsuspecting student and a distracted Finn walking the halls of McKinley. “Hey. I think it was a pretty graceful dive. I only tripped three other people.” Rachel, Finn, Blaine, Kurt, Santana and Artie were making a stop at the Lima Bean to get a little recharged before the weekend was over.

“Hey guys, I’ll catch up in a minute.” “Alright Finn. Don’t be long,” Rachel smiled.

Striding over to the bathroom, something caught his eye before he made it to the door. ‘Someone left their phone here. That’s rough.” Finn thought to himself. ‘I wonder who’s it is.’ Thinking he was doing the right thing, he started looking through the phone and opened up the photos app since it was the first thing he saw. Scrolling through the pics, the screen was filled with red, black and white. Finn cringed as the Warbler symbol flashed across the phone. About ready to just turn the phone in to the cashier, a familiar face caught his eye.. ‘(y/n)?’

“Hey guys!” Finn yelled as he approached his friends. “Oh there you are, Finn. We were wondering what took you.” Artie scrutinized his fellow singer. “You’ll never believe what I found.” Finn had everyone’s attention now.

“Well? What is it?” Santana. Always one to be straight to the point. “I found this phone sitting at a deserted table and so I tried to figure out who it might belong to. So I started looking through their photos-”

“Hold on, hold on,” Santana interrupted. “You tried to find someone’s identity by looking through their pictures?” “Where did you possibly find that knowledge?” Kurt questioned. “Never mind that. Look who’s in the pictures.”

Finn showed the group the picture of (y/n). “So it (y/n)’s phone? Big deal.” Santana stared at Finn as if he grew another head, completely confused.

“Yeah, no. It’s a Warbler’s phone. See?” He then showed them the Warbler symbol. “Let me see that,” Blaine took the phone and started swiping. “..holy crap. I think I might puke. Oh gosh!”

“Blaine! What is it?” Everyone hollered at their raven haired friend. Saying nothing, he held up the phone. Cue collective gasp.

*At Dalton Academy*

“Okay guys. Here’s the plan. We go in and confront that sniveling snake about what he thinks he’s doing with our (y/n). Then we use whatever means necessary to keep him away from our baby.” Santana sneered at the thought of Smythe. “Agreed.” All were in agreement then.

Storming up the stairs of the school, the group made their way to the Warbler’s practice room. Sneaking up to the door, the singers heard voices conversing inside. “Good. Okay. They’re in there. Let’s go.” Finn was ready to ‘talk’ to Sebastian. “Hold up a second,” Artie spoke. “I think.. there’s a girl’s voice..”

Everyone crowded the door, trying to hear. “-last time. Maybe we could hit up the ice cream parlor then head on over to the beach?” “Really? Seb, don’t you think that they’d see us?” “Come on, babe. I want to show you off. I really don’t care about your friends seeing us. In fact, it’d be a good thing. Maybe I can prove to them that it’s a good thing we’re together. I really love you and I’m sure they’ll be able to see that. Even if they don’t want to.” Sebastian had been trying to convince you to tell the New Directions for a while now. Everything he said was either shot down or flat out ignored. You really did care about Sebastian, but it’d be so hard for you if your friends, best friends, disapproved of your relationship.

“Sebastian. I know you really want to tell them.. it’s just,” you heaved a sigh loud enough for your eavesdropping friends to hear. “It’s just that if they didn’t approve of us, if they didn’t like us together, if they’d tried to break us apart.. it would kill me. I love you so much, but they might not love us together. They’re still my friends. My family. I just don’t think I’m ready.”

From the other side of the door, your friends were looking at each other like they were thoroughly disappointed with themselves, not you. “I can’t believe (y/n) feels like she can’t trust us with this. I feel so.. terrible,” Blaine was completely distraught that you felt that way.

“I know. We reacted so harshly when we found out, though. No wonder she felt like she couldn’t tell us. Ugh! I feel like a terrible friend,” Rachel was almost in tears now. “Hey, we all feel horrible. She’s our baby girl and we can’t have her feeling like we won’t support any decision she makes. Even if it is to date that..” Kurt stops as he sees his friends giving him wary looks. “..that great..singer..”

They all looked at each other in confirmation and pushed open the grand doors. Both heads inside snapped up to the intruders. “Guys? Wh-wh-what are you doing here?” Panic was evident in your eyes. Sebastian discreetly took your hand in his, the action not going unnoticed.

“We know, (y/n),” Artie spoke up. “Y-You do? Know what exactly?” “That you and this.. male are dating,” Santana cringed. “We found his phone at the Lima Bean and saw.. pictures,” Kurt visibly shuddered.

With a defeated sigh, you flopped onto the couch. “I’m so sorry, you guys. It’s just..”

“Yeah. We know, baby girl. I must admit we didn’t react well at first, but hearing what you just said.. we feel awful, sweetheart,” Kurt sympathized. “That was never my goal. I really do care a lot for Sebastian and if you all would try and keep me from being with him, it would tear me apart.”

Artie wheeled forward. “We know (n/n). We realize that now and we’re going to try and be supportive. Just as long as he gives us a reason not to.” He have a pointed look in Sebastian’s direction. “R-really? Oh my gosh! Thanks you guys! You won’t regret it, trust me.” “Yeah we better not,” Santana eyed Sebastian.

Sebastian took your hand. “I’m really thankful for this, you guys. (Y/n) means everything to me. So much so I’d give up singing to keep her. I’ll do my absolute best to keep her happy.”

You grinned up at him. You were short, okay? Besides, it doesn’t help he’s a freaking giant. “Keep her happy and we won’t make you quit singing,” Blaine stated. “But if you fail. You will suffer the consequences,” Santana added.

“I agree wholeheartedly. Besides, if I ever did anything to hurt my- our little (y/n), I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.”

The New Directions looked at each other and silently agreed. “Have fun kids,” Santana said. “Keep it classy,” Kurt added. After hugging all of them and Sebastian surprisingly shaking the guys’ hands and getting his phone back, they took their leave.

“Well. That went better than expected.” “See? I told you they’d be cool,”  Sebastian said with a smirk. “You really like being right, don’t you?” you asked. “I like being right about us.” With a wink and kiss, neither of you could stop beaming.

I would like to hear the story of how you slept under the christmas tree

so i immigrated to the US at age 9, right, and one of the first things my family did was join the local Chinese church. as far as the whole “figuring out how to do things so we no longer have to live in the back shed of Uncle Joe’s* Magic Emporium” thing goes, it’s a pretty sound strategy! now we had people to teach my dad how to drive and give us old furniture and say “hey, Seattle is pretty rainy maybe you should rent an apartment-like space before either a) the shed roof caves in b) your daughter with the famously delicate constitution falls dramatically ill from a strain of black mold or possibly herpes”

*is not my uncle, that’s what his store was called. he sold magic gadgets and my dad knew him because???? possibly in a past life they ran a meth empire in Albuquerque, who knows

ANYWAY. thanks to the church i did not fall dramatically ill from black mold or possibly herpes, but there was an unforeseen factor in joining a Christian church, which was that they? were pretty hardcore? about Jesus?**

**in a nice “we build houses for the homeless” way, not in…the other way

given that we’d just immigrated and that China’s religious policy is worshiping Mao’s preserved corpse ehhhhh…let’s call it “freedom of atheism,” my family was decidedly not hardcore about Jesus. my parents mostly took the bemused “i guess Jesus is okay since he indirectly led to us living in a place suited for human habitation” route, but i

was

DISGUSTED.

i was the first kid in my class to get her red scarf, okay, and when we sang the national anthem and saluted the flag every morning i fucking meant what i was singing. we almost didn’t come to America; my dad had more lucrative job offers in Germany and Belgium, but i put my foot down because everyone knows Europe is full of gross imperialists Dad, GOSH, and the Americans helped us fight off the Japanese.

so seeing all these fellow Chinese believing in THE CAPITALIST GOD was basically the worst thing to ever happen to my delicate psyche. my parents’ tacit approval was even worse: DID PATRIOTISM AND COMMUNISM MEAN NOTHING TO THEM? DIDN’T THEY KNOW THAT DOING NOTHING AGAINST OPPRESSION MADE THEM OPPRESSORS THEMSELVES??

clearly something needed to be done.

so because the church was pretty hardcore about Jesus, it was understandably also hardcore about Christmas. big party, massive intricately decorated REAL TREE, sleepover for the kids with presents in the morning—you name it. everyone was going to be there.

WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO PROVE TO EVERYONE HOW WRONG THEY ARE ABOUT JESUS.

my plan:

  1. sleep UNDER the giant real Christmas tree: y’know, the one with real pointy needles reaching all the way down to the base? that sheds? with lots of pokey tinsel?
  2. catch Jesus in the act of depositing presents***: look. i’d seen like, ALL of Scooby Doo by this point. i knew Jesus was probably a real person, just not the Son of God.
  3. subdue Jesus so he’s still around when everyone else wakes up: CLEARLY VERY FEASIBLE, given that Jesus was a heavyset white dude who used superhuman agility and strength to deliver presents around the world overnight and possibly had reindeer minions and i weighed 70 pounds at most while sopping wet.
  4. (who is Santa Claus?? who cares)
  5. ????
  6. EVERYONE MAGICALLY BECOMES AN ATHEIST AGAIN, AMERICA BECOMES A COMMUNIST STATE

***even if i didn’t believe in him, why was i slavishly devoted stopping a highly altruistic man who gave? people? presents? did i hate joy????

sure enough, at around 3 in the morning i heard soft boots approaching the tree. i reached out and snatched one of the Ankles of Jesus

—whereupon Youth Pastor Liao screamed “OH MY LORD” and kicked me in the face.

and THAT, dear friends, is how i spent my first Christmas in America with a concussion.

If you idolise 13 reasons why. Unfollow me. Bye. That show romanticises and lives on the stereotype of teenagers with mental health issues. As if we are depressed fucks, and our suicides are a cry of revenge. The main character herself Hannah fucking makes tapes to make the people who once hurt her practically regret their existence. In reality people who hurt you, unless they were complete psychopaths would have remorse or regrets of their actions, even if you don’t think so, or know it. Hannah doesn’t understand the extent of making her suicide as an act of revenge and those stupid tapes she made, blaming people for her death. This could lead to the ‘bad characters’ of the show themselves to develop or worsen their mental health issues, maybe they would attempt suicide; affecting their immediate and wider communal institutions such as their school. In reality people who commit suicide feel completely isolated, and they take on everyone’s problems. Not blame people for their problems. Mental health issues are far more complex than the show portrays. And hello? It’s a show??? It’s obviously never going to be a reflection of true reality. There’s profiting and a fan base based on a show about a girl who plots revenge through her suicide and tapes. There are memes popping up?!
If you sit down and thought about somebody you knew who committed suicide, and imagine their suicide was an act of revenge, and they made tapes to everyone who hurt them; you would fucking realise it’s fucked up and unrealistic. Also the show makes out as if romance solves everything? It alludes to if Clay ever loved Hannah she would have never killed herself. Romance is never a solution. Romance is an addition to life. Romance does not just solve suicide quick and easy?
Stay fucking woke my friends. Realise this show does not ‘show the reality of mental health
issues’, it only profits off the stereotypes.

Mental health is far more complex than we think, and what we are presented. Edit; it’s just important to me people understand why this show is terrible, in my opinion. I have been through stuff. I have friends who have, and continue to go through issues. I’ve seen the consequences of mental health issues, and experienced some. I want people to know this show is unrealistic, and things are definitely far more complex in reality. I come from an Asian culture that doesn’t really acknowledge mental health issues, and treats it as almost an abnormality. But I’m born and raised in Australia where mental health awareness though quite strong, can still be improved upon. I don’t want fellow millennials to believe this show is a realistic depiction, I want them to realise when things get tough, and when they go through issues or if they ‘relate too much’ to the show; there is help that is accessible and should be seeked. Taking your life is your own choice, nobody forces you to do so, and it never should be an act of revenge.

I didn’t grow up around Godly people. Out of my entire family? Only my mom is a fellow believer. Out of my friends? Before the last year or two, only two of them. And out of those three people in my life who do believe in God and believe that Jesus is the Son of God and died for our sins, none of them go to church or read their Bibles or even really talk with me (or anyone) about Him.

So please know, from the very bottom of my heart, that I thank God every single day for all of you. Please know that I want to cry when I think about how, in the past two years, God has placed so many wonderful Godly people into my life. I couldn’t see it at the time, but now? I’m looking around myself at all of you, and at my coworkers, and at my church, and at just all of the people I’m surrounded by, and I can see how every single second of every single minute of every single hour of every single day of the past few years really has been all Him.

He is so wonderful, and I am so grateful, and my heart is so filled with love. My past isn’t perfect, but He is. My present isn’t perfect, but He is. He is perfect, and He is good. And so I will lean into Him, no matter what happens, and praise Him and glorify Him and help others to know and love Him, and I will be grateful and thankful every single second of every single minute of every single hour of every single day of the rest of this life He has given me.

If you don’t know Jesus, if you’ve never been to church or read the Bible or if you also, like me, didn’t grow up around Godly people, I’m here for you. And more importantly, God is here for you. He is here for you and He loves you so much and He can and will change your life, one second, one minute, one hour, one day, one year at a time.

He is the reason I’m still here today. He is everything

Don’t be afraid.

Come. Come to Jesus.

Voices

She started hearing voices her first night on campus. It was a strange college to be sure. All the traditions set her teeth on edge, but something had felt right when she clicked submit, so here she was. And, she was hearing voices. They weren’t the stereotypical, movie version of “crazy” voices, so at least she still had that. No, the voices were more like daydreams. They happened only when she was on the edge of consciousness, when she was almost asleep or almost awake. In the blurring of her conscious and subconscious minds she was able to here the clear, precise instructions. “Be the god they want to believe in.” “Promise them the revolution they will inevitably create.” “Be what they want until their belief makes it true.” It was all said in a cool, light yellowish voice. They, for after her friends boyfriend had been taken and returned she had no trouble believing in the fair folk, spoke to her like clockwork every time she was falling asleep. No matter where she was, no matter the time or circumstances, as she was enveloped by unconsciousness she had no choice but to listen to their counsel. And listen she did. She had journals, secret secret journals, filled with the words she heard. Maybe the fae who favored her didn’t know it, maybe they did, still they told her the history of fae and man. Wars and kings, gods and demons all swirled in her mind. From them she learned the strings of men’s heart and what it was that made fae exist.
It took till senior year for her to begin responding.
“Dear heart, most beautiful voice of my mind, what is it you would like to see?”
That first day she spoke was the only day they did not speak to her. She understood that they were slightly wary of their pawn becoming queen.
The next day they responded, “You are to be the leader of man who knows the hearts of fae.”
“What type of leader shall I be?” She queried.
“Cult, religious, political, it matters not as long as your fellows believe.”
After that they plied her with pretty words and poetry, always skipping around why they wanted her. But, this is where their actions turned against them. She knew enough of fae and man to know they wanted war, chaos, power vacuums to take for their own. They wanted her to start a revolution among men as they did among fae.
She wasn’t completely against the idea.

Chosen People

Two of my younger brothers have gone on missions. One to Madagascar and the other to the south of France, both French speaking.

Pretty early on, I noticed something disturbing about the photos they sent home during their missions. A pattern that only I seemed to see. I saw proof of something I’ve suspected this for a long time, but didn’t have much proof to back me up, not anything I could really point to. But after a collective four years of visuals, I think I have the evidence.

NEARLY ALL of the missionaries in those pictures (with one or two exceptions) are white Americans. NEARLY ALL of the investigators and new members in those pictures are 1) people of color, and 2) poor.

We’ve all heard stories of missionaries who go to Germany or the Netherlands or Australia. We’ve heard that they had wonderful experiences. We’ve heard that they taught and preached with all their might. But at the end of their two years, they may have only a mere handful of baptisms to their name… if their lucky to have even one!

WHY?

Most of North America and Europe are comprised of so-called “first world” nations, countries in which a vast majority of their citizens enjoy a level of security, financial stability, and guaranteed basic human rights. Most, if not all, of these nations achieved this status in earlier centuries by systematically invading, conquering, and pillaging the countries of Africa, Asia, and South America. The Western nations erected empires from the stolen riches of the others. This is basic Colonialism 101 stuff, I know, but stay with me.

Another mark of “first world” nations are high levels of literacy, education, and access to information (the internet). Most people in America and Europe today are either 1) atheist/ agnostic (or moving that way), or 2) deeply entrenched in their own brand of religion (usually Roman Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, or other protestant or fundamentalist Christian sects like Lutheranism). People in first world countries are essentially “immune” to the virus of Mormonism. Why? Mormonism has nothing to offer them. What, after all, do you get the man who has everything?

In stark contrast, people in developing or third world nations naturally and rightfully seek hope from any source that will give it to them. Unfortunately, that’s where missionaries come in. Mormon missionaries continue a tradition of christian colonialism that has been continued for centuries, a scam perpetrated on the poorest and least able of our fellow humans.

DO NOT BELIEVE the lie that the church is humanitarian. Where does their tithing money go? To Utah. The mormon church takes from the poorest to feed the richest. PEOPLE NEED FOOD, NOT TEMPLES.

DO NOT BELIEVE the lie that the church wants to save souls. The church wants membership numbers and tithing money and a foothold in every part of the world. A FIRE ONLY BURNS SO LONG AS THERE IS FEUL.

DO NOT BELIEVE the lie that the church to better lives. It has the funds and the workforce to accomplish world-changing relief projects, to stop massive amounts of poverty and hunger, to stand in the way of human rights abuses the world over. Do they stop those things? No. Because the church needs horrible things to happen in the world to be able to offer their product - a FALSE SALVATION, a safety hatch from all your worldly woes, the promise of a happy hereafter in return for mortal misery. BY THEIR WORKS, YE SHALL KNOW THEM.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints targets and exploits the poor and the oppressed of the world. Their brand of colonialism is subtler than swords and smallpox, but it is a conquest all the same.

Control

TITLE: Control

CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: One Shot

AUTHOR: MaliceManaged

ORIGINAL IMAGINE: Imagine being the only SHIELD agent capable of ‘controlling’ Loki (meaning the only one he actually behaves for) out of all the ‘handlers’ he’s had, much to everyone’s surprise. Eventually, they ask you how you manage it and you reply with, “Maybe just be nice to him?” Nobody believes that’s it, of course, but it totally is; he genuinely just loves that you actually treat him like a person instead of this troublesome thing nobody wants around.

RATING: G

NOTES/WARNINGS: Why is it that every time I try to work on my existing fics, I end up writing something completely different?

She hadn’t noticed it at first. She didn’t make a habit of socialising with most of the people she worked with, it wasn’t in her nature and they simply didn’t have that kind of relationship; and so she’d missed the looks she had begun to receive since she’d been given her current assignment, going about the workdays completely oblivious.

Loki, on the other hand, had definitely noticed; it contrasted so sharply with the looks they gave him as he trailed behind her, after all. Usually, he just smirked in return, maybe even waved, turning their glares even colder. The whole situation was terribly amusing, he thought.

Someone that has a sweet-tooth, and is cute, and is fierce, and is lazy all at the same time.

*oh yeah, btw, any Hoshi stans?*

WonWoo:

Someone who would try to understand him, would laugh with him and would cry with him. An emotionally attached person.

Woozi:

Definitely someone shorter than himself because he’d want to feel like a man of the relationship and his height means a lot to him.

A person with a good bit of humour because the boy’s about to wreck the place.

An person with shit-loads of sass to be able to deal with his own.

Are you sinless?

Don’t you have a single trace of flaw in your life? Have you not done something you knew had displease Allah?

I will tell you something, YOU ARE NOT PERFECT!

You sin and you do things that you know have displeased Allah yet you have the will to take and spend so much time connecting the dots just to find fault on someone else’s life not even thinking that you yourself have flaws that need repentance!

Are you so perfect? Do you have a medal or badge where it gives you the right to go over other people’s lives and say this and that about them and judge them even when all you have collected were just a pile of hearsay?
_____

I am always fascinated at the amount of time spent by someone who says he or she is a believer of Islam but does all possible connections just to bring down and talk ill of his/her brother or sister in faith.

Are the sins we have inculcated not enough for us to think for a moment that “hey I can’t do this, I have my sins as well.” or that “I know I have my own sins, how would I feel if someone would go and spread and tell people about my sins as well?”.

We do not fear nor do we think twice of hurting our fellow believer these days, we just want to go and spread rumours not thinking how such rumours can impact people.

Everyone is going onto a struggle that we do not know of, yet they are still striving to be better Muslims. Why can we not do the same?

Let me remind you about this part when the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam was telling the people about his Isra wal Miraj.

Anas ibn Malik  Radiyallahu Anhu narrated that;

The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam said:

“When my Lord took me up into heaven, I passed by some people who had nails of copper with which they were scratching their faces and chests.

I said: ‘Who are these, O Jibreel?’

He said: ‘These are the ones who used to eat the flesh of the people and impugn their honour.’”
_____

O slaves of Allah, As Salaam! Remember that as a believer of Islam and a Muslim, one must guard his tongue and avoid things that have been forbidden.

Know that gheebah [backbiting], buhtan [slander] and nameemah [malicious gossip] are things that are amongst those that have been forbidden!

If you are to spend hours on connecting the dots of someone’s life, then do so for your own! Spend hours practicising Al-Muhasabah [self-inventory] so you may know where to place yourself, so you may improve yourself!

You are not perfect, you are a sinful slave of Allah and know everyone of us  are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent often! So repent as much and be sincere in your repentance.

You will die alone, you will be placed in your grave alone! Only your deeds will be with you to help you, so make sure your deeds will be done in sincerity and solely for Allah!

O slave of Allah, Al Kareem! Do not let your bag of deeds be of those weary and weak or be taken away from you on the day of Reckoning, refrain from talking ill of your brother in faith or else your good deeds will be taken away from you while the bad deeds of those you speak ill of in this world will be burdened by you!

Speak good or remain silent!

Let this be a reminder for the mindful!
_____

May we all learn to be careful of what we say and remain silent if our words would just cause hatred and chaos amongst our brothers and sisters in faith.

Amin.

Tsukuyomi theory foreshadowing

So, we just got this page on Chapter 73 which was released this month

and OH was it so heartwarming.

To think that Yukine really DOES see Yato as his father, and he’d consider a NIGHTMARE as a COMFORTABLE DREAM just because he thinks Yato was there. I just can’t help but break a tear of joy (and pain) for these cinnamon rolls. please give them a break.

But anywayssss, what I really wanted to point out was why does Yukine think that Yato was in that dream? A lot of readers think that Yukine meant to say that he sees this guy from his dreams as Yato.

Mainly because of the symbolism on this panel from Chapter 72

Okay, I believe that it was already confirmed that the shadow guy on the dream was Yukine’s Otou-san, and it is undeniable that he sees Yato as his father figure.

But what if what Yukine really meant when he said “But if I looked harder, you were there” was this other object present on the dream

I mean, it’s even on this panel

The Tsukuyomi theory was kinda “debunked” on the recent chapters, but seeing this gives me a lot of hope that it’ll be confirmed soon. It took me 2 weeks and rereading thrice just to notice this foreshadowing. It may either be a foreshadowing or I just have a wild imagination, but I just really want to share this info. Rejoice, my fellow Tsukuyomi theory believers!
