a character after my own heart

I am just one of many who feel personally attacked by this character and his design :I;;;;  enjoyed adorable Dream Daddy, and I have always been incredibly awed & inspired by Shanen/epsee’s artwork, so this is that put together ^-^

anonymous asked:

Do you have any advice on how to write a grieving character? Thank you!!

Hi!

Grieving isn’t pretty. It isn’t always dramatic, either – while some people certainly do go home and throw their favorite vase against the wall, some people retreat into themselves and become emotionally unresponsive (that’s what I do). Violence or anger is more likely to occur if the death is sudden – so is retreating into an emotional shell, really, because it’s often a result of shock. But both can occur outside of a sudden death – cancer isn’t always sudden, but many people still become angry when their loved one is diagnosed with or dies because of it. Basically, if the death feels unfair in any way – if it’s sudden, or if it feels like it happened too early, such as in the case of cancer or of some sort of cardiac disaster (a heart attack, a stroke, etc) – it’s more likely to provoke anger or shock, depending on your character’s temperament and attachment to the dying/dead character.

That was just a general disclaimer. Now, onto the meat of grieving!

Firstly, grieving can begin before the person is technically dead – you don’t have to wait for the person to go flatline and physically stop breathing for your other characters to feel a sense of loss. If your character suffered a medical disaster or an accident that rendered them comatose, or if your character is obviously fighting a losing battle (again, terminal cancer comes to mind), your other characters could start grieving them even though they’re still breathing and their heart is still beating. However, the likelihood is that your characters won’t be able to really start working through the five stages of grief until your character actually does physically die, because rarely does death really hit home until it has occurred.

Speaking of the five stages of grief, those are important! They’re as follows:

  • Denial/Isolation: your characters can’t believe your dead character is really dead. This is a defense mechanism of sorts for your mind – a way to delay at least some of the pain, and give yourself time to process what’s happened (although that processing happens subconsciously, because on the surface you’re denying that anything’s happened at all). If the dead character fought a long battle with an illness before death, this stage may be expedited by the fact that your characters had time to process the character’s dying as it was happening. If the death was sudden in any way, this stage may be prolonged, because it will be harder to comprehend something that happened so quickly, and shock will be more likely to occur.
  • Anger: the pain your characters were masking in the denial stage starts to come to the surface, and as a response to the pain, your characters get angry (just as many other vulnerable emotions, such as fear, are expressed as anger – anger is a tough emotion, as opposed to fear and grief, so most people subconsciously opt for anger because it makes them feel less vulnerable). They may feel they’ve been robbed of your dead character’s companionship. Their anger may manifest itself in many different ways: isolation, irritability, or self-destructive behavior, to name a few. Their anger may also direct itself at various places: the medical professionals who failed to save your dead character’s life, God for taking your dead character, even the dead character him/herself, if they could in any way be responsible for their own death (if they were driving intoxicated, if they never ate healthily and suffered a heart attack, etc.).
  • Bargaining: before death, this stage may manifest itself as “please God, just let them live and I’ll tithe my ten percent and go to church every Sunday”, or “please, [Dying character’s name], just hold on and get better and we’ll [do that thing the dying character has always wanted to do]”. (Keep in mind that most people have an astounding impulse to be religious during a time of crisis, whether they’ve been religious in the past or not.) After death, this stage may manifest itself in the “could’ve-should’ve-would’ve” philosophy: “if only we’d taken them to the doctor sooner”, “I should’ve made him stay home”, “I knew there was something wrong with him!”, and so on. This stage is generally an attempt to regain control of the situation – your characters feel like they’re taking some kind of action by offering a proposition, or by placing blame.
  • Depression: there are two types of depression associated with grief. In the first (which is almost more similar to anxiety) your characters worry more about others: what if I haven’t been there for people when they needed me, how are we going to pay for the funeral/burial services, and so on. Basically it deals more with the practical aspects of the character’s death. The second type is more introspective – your characters may retreat into themselves and analyze old memories of your dead character, and their feelings on everything that’s happened. This type is private, and your characters probably won’t share much about their thoughts if they experience it.
  • Acceptance: this stage is marked by withdrawal and calm – it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from depression. It’s not a stage of joyous frolicking and exclaiming, “It’s okay! I understand everything about [Dead Character’s] death!”. Your characters may still not understand the purpose of your dead character’s death, but understanding and acceptance are not synonyms, nor are they mutually inclusive. The important thing about this stage is that your characters can make peace with the death, and can move on.

Keep in mind that while I’ve listed these stages in what is regarded as their general order, every person (and character) grieves differently – they may experience these emotions in a different order than that above. They may also go through one or several of the stages more than once, or cycle through the first four of them multiple times before reaching the fifth. Some characters may not even reach the fifth at all – depending on the circumstances of the death and the character’s attachment to your dead character, they may never fully accept your dead character’s death. The stages above are just a general framework for grieving.

Also, keep in mind that if your character’s death was tied in any way to traumatic incidents for your other characters, it may complicate the grieving process for those other characters, because the character’s death will be tied to other painful or triggering memories.

I hope this helps! If you need anything else, please feel free to ask. - @authors-haven

Things my friends have said about Voltron

“STOP TRYING TO MAKE ME WATCH YOUR GAY SHOW. IT’S NOT GONNA HAPPEN. I DON’T CARE ABOUT WHOEVER THAT LANCE GUY IS.”

“Klance is real and the government knows it.”

“I think I’m gonna go full Keith Kogane and grow a mullet (me: if you grow a mullet I’m divorcing you) We aren’t married???”

“I can see how it’s kinda cute. (two episodes later) Oh my god I’m obsessed.”

“Lance Mclain is my actual child. I would die for him.”

“Hunk is honestly such a sweetie.”

(after finding out pidge is a girl) “My whole life is a lie.”

“Shiro is the only person with any goddamn sense.”

“Shit, that’s soo fucking gay though.”

“Lance’s hair got more character development in season two than he did.”

“yES ALLURA SLAY!”

“So anyways Pidge completely owns my entire heart and soul.”

“Lance, honey, that’s gay. You’re gay.”

“Keith is such a fucking edgelord but at the same time such a sweetheart and I’m not sure how to feel about it.”

  • You: goro akechi is a terrible irredeemable character and you're horrible for liking him!
  • Me, an intellectual: Goro Akechi is an incredibly complex character who has had to put up with a lifetime of abuse and made some extremely bad, reckless decisions in his life that I doubt anyone approves of. He has an obsession with praise and acknowledgement that lead him to working with Shidou and ended up getting himself trapped there for two and a half years. There is evidence to suggest that he was heavily mentally ill and regretted his actions, especially after he found out that he could steal hearts instead of killing people. He did not have someone to guide him like the Thieves had Morgana. Yes, he is a perpetrator and I am not denying that, but he is also a victim as well who was blinded by his own selfishness, and was played by every side (Shidou, the Thieves, and Yaldabaoth all used him as a pawn) and, after some coercion, near-willingly payed the price. He's a warning, an example of what the Thieves could have been and he is my favorite character due to the complexity of his character and role in the plot, flaws and all.

WATCH THE FULL VIDEO HERE or HERE!

My first collab video, made together with the oh so talented BleedGirl! :D We wanted to make a tribute for Disney and Studio Ghibli (with a touch of Kingdom Hearts) and this is our little baby! <3

I decided to only include my own manips here, but make sure to go watch the whole video if you wan to see more characters like Belle, Howl, Ariel, Ponyo, Totoro and many more! (^-^)

Sailor Moon left me with a lot of good warm fuzzies. I’m really glad I watched it all the way through finally because this series has a special place in my heart and was one of the first anime, besides Pokemon, that I ever watched. I am rewatching or watching a lot of magical girl series to research for my own magical girl project and Sailor Moon is, of course, such an iconic show I already know there’s a lot about the feeling this series gives me that I want to channel into my story.

I did watch Sailor Moon Crystal after this but I will not be doing any on that since the original anime still has a lot of the same visuals and characters and also I just prefer the original anime far over Crystal. The next two in this series will be Magic Knight Rayearth and Magic Knight Rayearth 2, which I am currently really enjoying.

About that neck touch...

So after spending way more of my life than is probably healthy looking at and analyzing every single shot from this episode that could possibly be construed at Destiel-related, even a TINY BIT, I realized that there is one shot people seem to not discuss very much…

Now. I know what you’re saying–”but we’ve TALKED about the hand-holding!” And yes, my friends, hands touching are always worth discussing (and discussing…and discussing…), but what I want to talk about is Dean’s OTHER hand…

Now…I am a theater child. I grew up doing shows. And I know that actors tend to be touchy-feely people, even when they are just friends. It’s what they do. My friends and I had no problem treating one another like armchairs half of the time, sitting in one another’s laps, leaning our heads on each others’ shoulders. So whenever people start pointing at some of these touches as evidence of Destiel, one part of me gets very excited, while the other part says “now hang on, you and your friends totally did this same stuff and it didn’t mean anything other than that you were friends.”

But.

In this shot, Dean doesn’t JUST touch Cas’s hand, or even his back. From what I can see of this shot, he puts his hand on the lower part of Cas’s neck. Now even I, my touchy-feely-theater-person-self, would never have touched the back of a friend’s neck. That is just getting a little bit too intimate for friendship. That is not what friends do, even the most lovey ones.

That is what my boyfriend does.

Note, too, how Dean’s hand lingers on Cas’s neck (or upper back, as he does seem to slide it down slightly after the initial contact). He maintains contact until Cas breaks it to turn around, a gesture of comfort both for Cas and himself, of reminding himself that Cas is here and is really okay.

Folks, this is not the touch of someone who is just a friend, nor is it an unintentional gesture made by actors who are just doing what touchy people do. This is the gesture shared by two characters who are much, much closer than just friends. And it, even more than the hand-clasping, set my heart to fluttering :).

Yu-Gi-Oh! (original) Drinking Game

-Drink every time someone plays a card that doesn’t exist irl. If you do this during season 4 have a liver transplant on standby.
-Alternatively, drink (or sip) whenever someone plays a card you own.
-Drink every time the animation style changes.
-Drink every time the power of friendship wins the day.
-Drink whenever the “heart of the cards” is mentioned.
-Drink whenever Kaiba voices the gripes of the audience (like that one time after the Noah arc when he basically said “this whole filler arc was a waste of my time let’s forget all about it"👌🏻).
-Take a SIP for every last-minute/last-turn ass pull strategy.
-Chug from the bottle when a character says a line that is actually cool/funny/scary.
-Drink every time someone explains what Pot of Greed does. Seriously this happens EVERY TIME SOMEONE PLAYS IT.
-Similar to the last one: SIP whenever someone explains basic rules or does simple arithmetic (ex. “800 plus 500 is 1300 ATK points!!!).
-Drink every time a person declares something "impossible”.
-SIP when Yami goes all Dan Green and super-dramatic-shouty on his opponent.
-Chug whenever Yami and Kaiba actually get along/work as a team (don’t worry this only happens like twice).
-Drink whenever someone’s soul gets nicked (via shadow realm, seal of Orichalcos, etc). Make it a double if they stay gone for more than one episode.

The V Route Has Confirmed Five Things for Me

1. I was right to both love and protect V and Jumin.

2. I will physically fight Rika to save Saeran. I will fight her and her whole damn cult to save him. Let me love this boy who is in desperate need of genuine love. He is literally only the way he is because of Rika like she is entire catalyst for his state of being.

3. Yoosung has jumped up with his snake of a cousin to the top of my “Least Favorite Characters Ever” list because how the fuck can he try to justify Rika fucking blinding V like what good reasons could she have like even after it all comes out in the open Yoosung is still fucking attacking V like get away from me and get away from V.

4. Rika has a fucking black heart I don’t care if she has a mental illness it doesn’t excuse her starting a cult, brainwashing and drugging people, abusing Saeran to the point he’s so broken that his own name throws him into a downward spiral, and attacking V when all that man tried to do was love in the best way he knew how like I don’t care keep her away from the RFA and Saeran and MC and just people in general she’s a fucking menace.

5. Vanderwood is the only sane person in this entire game and it is both hilarious and amazing and I love them.

But anyway I love this new route and I love Cheritz they’re amazing.

justanotherhamiltrash  asked:

Hi there, do you have any recs for long drarry fics? I'm not very good at finding them

Hello!! I’ve done a rec list for long, slow burn fics in the past, so please check that out because I love every fic on that list to death! But OH MAN I could talk about long Drarry fics for the rest of my life, so here are some more! All very long, but not necessarily slow burn this time ;)

What We Pretend We Can’t See by gyzym (131K)- Seven years out from the war, Harry learns the hard truth of old history: it’s never quite as far behind you as you thought.
This is the only one I am going to copy from the slow burn rec list, because I just want to rec it every day of my life. It is quite literally my number one favorite fic ever, and I am not exaggerating. Do you see how serious I am right now? I am never serious. This fic is so amazing it turned me serious. I’m not even going to summarize it again because if you trust me at all you will just go read it nooooooow.

Turn by Saras_Girl (307K)- One good turn always deserves another. Apparently.
Of course in the middle of declaring my favorite fic ever, I had to remember Turn and how utterly brilliant it is and how I’ve reread it and it was STILL utterly brilliant the second time and have a crisis because MAYBE THIS IS ACTUALLY MY FAVORITE FIC???! Aaah help, I can never choose! Anyway, are you a drarry fan who hasn’t read Turn yet? Really? Well, in that case FUCK YOU BECAUSE I AM SO JEALOUS YOU GET TO READ IT FOR THE FIRST TIME YOU LUCKY BASTARD. *ahem* Anyway, in this amazing fic, epilogue-compliant and worn-down Harry goes to an alternate dimension in which he is happily married to Draco, owns the best pet snake ever, and makes furniture for a living (love artsy Harry <3). It’s truly a masterpiece, and as always with my recs there is a happy ending, so don’t worry!

Tales from the Special Branch Series by femmequixotic (272K so far)- (Summary is from the second part of the series, which is the first long installment: Lost in Your ArmsThree months after their brief encounter, Draco has almost forgotten about Potter–or so he tells himself. Then a Dark wizard shows up on the Auror radar and all hell breaks loose. Draco will have to choose between everything he holds dear–everything he’s worked so hard for–and a few stolen moments of passion with a certain green-eyed Inspector, once his sworn enemy and now something rather different entirely. He’ll make the right choice, won’t he? Who is he kidding? He’ll ruin everything, as per usual. Bad choices and the name Malfoy go hand in hand.
This series is a WIP, but a regularly updated one and the FIRST CHAPTER OF THE NEXT BOOK IS BEING RELEASED TOMORROW AND I AM SO EXCITED!!! I feel so lucky to be following along with it as it comes out, because let me tell you, this is an instant classic! There is lovely forbidden fornication between a boss (Harry) and his subordinate (Draco) (the prequel was written for the kink fest so you can bet the sex is SCORCHING), a very compelling mystery/case, and truly brilliant characterization! I identify so much with this Draco. And I also love that Harry isn’t the perfect flawless cinnamon roll he is often portrayed as in fics. Everyone in this series is very human, and I am just dying of excitement to find out what happens to them next! I know I’ve already gushed about this fic in several other places recently, and I’m sorry to repeat myself but I really can’t get enough! PLEASE JOIN ME IN ROOTING FOR @femmequixotic AS SHE KINDLY DEDICATES HER SOUL TO US ALL FOR THE NEXT BIT OF HER LIFE <3

Secrets by Vorabiza (395K)- Beginning with Draco’s unexpected arrival at the Dursleys, Harry’s summer after sixth year becomes filled with activity and many secrets. As his summer progresses, Harry generates several unexpected allies as he finds himself actively becoming the leader of the Light side.
OMG it’s the first fic I ever read!! The fic that brought me into the fandom! I have suuuuuch a soft spot for this fic, and it is just so so so good! It’s probably my favorite adventure/wizarding war plot of all. Harry is just so confident and he embraces his Slytherin side and really Gets Shit Done, and it’s SO SATISFYING. Also, I love any fic in which Draco helps with the Horcrux hunt. Also there’s a baaaaaaby (no mpreg) and mentor!Snape, which is really nice. This fic was written post-HBP, but is SURPRISINGLY accurate in its predictions. Oh, and the sex is super hot too ;)

Checkmate by Naadi (245K)- Draco has the perfect plan to get Harry Potter and challenges him to a game of Dare Chess. But is it love, or betrayal, he has in mind? A real chess game is played throughout the story.
This fic is so lovely! It’s an “alternate 7th year AU”, written after Goblet of Fire. It’s fluffy and funny and lovey and then dramatic and passionate and YEAH I LOVED IT. The real time game of chess, in which Harry and Draco take turns making “moves” (on each other) is just such a wonderful idea. Read the author’s note for more info!

Leo Inter Serpentes by Aeternum (658K combined so far)- Just one conversation between two eleven year old boys goes slightly differently, and the world changes. Just how much will be different with Harry being sorted into Slytherin, and how much will stay the same?
SLYTHERIN HARRY ALERT SLYTHERIN HARRY ALERT! Yep, a Slytherin Harry rewrite, and a REALLY GOOD ONE. Like usually I love the idea of Slytherin Harry, and then once I start reading I either find I’m bored because everything is just a repeat of canon or I can’t get into it because everyone is so OOC. But not this one! This fic is engaging and different enough from canon to be interesting and I love the eleven-year-old baby drarry friendship that eventually turns to romance! This fic also features benevolent mentor!Snape, which I suppose is either an enticement or a warning depending on your preferences. You SHOULD be warned that it’s a WIP. But the author is currently actively posting the 6th book, and I have hope it won’t be abandoned :)

Any Instrument by dicta_contrion (131K)- Draco Malfoy wouldn’t go back to England for anything less than an exceptional case. Being asked to figure out why Harry Potter can’t control his magic might be exceptional enough to qualify.
Okay I have a HUGE thing for healer!draco and this fic portrayed him so so so perfectly. Harry is having complications with his magic after an operation gone wrong. So Draco comes from France and of course they can’t get together because Draco is Harry’s healer but OMG THE UST and then let me just say that when they finally do have sex, it’s the most beautiful, moving, heart-stopping sex scene you will ever read. Like, I felt it in my soul. And the character development is so compelling and there are literally no flaws in this fic whatsoever.

Starts With a Spin by Maxine (120K)- It started with the spin of a bottle, and now Harry and Draco have gotten themselves so far into their own game there’s almost no way out again. Except to keep playing.
AAAAH this fic has all the teenage drarry feels! They’re so in character, always trying to one-up each other! And like these constant party games are happening and they’re being “forced” to go further and further with each other by their friends until they’re actually having sex, and YET THEN THE WAR IS STILL ON AS WELL, and it’s just super well-written and great! Another classic :D

Changing of the Guard by Lomonaaeren (210K)- Need a perfect stranger? Ask Metamorphosis. Harry Potter runs the business secretly and becomes whoever’s needed for each occasion. He’s not sure whether he should be more surprised, worried, or amused when Draco Malfoy comes to Metamorphosis and requests an actor who can play his boyfriend so that his parents will disown him. Yet Harry has even more dangerous choices after he creates Brian, Draco’s “perfect” boyfriend. Draco doesn’t know who Brian is, but he’s trying to find out—and now so is Harry.
Aaah Lomonaaeren! Drarry writer of my dark, dark heart! And yet I know some people aren’t huge fans of her style and I don’t want to be reccing her fics all the time, so I try to keep the Lomon recs relatively infrequent. But if you are looking for long fics and you do like her style, I’m pretty sure she can keep you busy for like an entire year. This woman is more prolific than Steven King, and it’s a true blessing. As for this particular fic, Harry basically has Dissociative Identity Disorder, but he has been making the most of it by running a whoever-you-need-for-hire business. Only then Draco arrives, and Harry’s world had to come crashing down at some point and that point is NOW, and the drama is just so so good and this fic gave me ALL THE FEELS. It’s possibly my favorite of her fics :)

Supernatural:  10 Things I Learned From Tonight’s Episode.

Season 12, Episode 12:  “Stuck in the Middle (With You)”

*SPOILERS!  (Duh.)*

1.  Blatant Tarantino references are abound, and I love every second of it.

2.  Dean is persistently uncool with anyone hitting on his man.

Check out them Rage Dimples.

3.  Dean has a unique approach towards “teaching Cas to flirt.”

I.e. unabashedly flirting with him himself.

4.  It’s been shown time and time again that keeping secrets on this show is never, ever a good idea, and it almost invariably leads to someone almost dying.  And yet, everyone inexplicably continues to do so.

Evidently, it runs in the family.

5.  Nevertheless, Mary canonically considers Cas to be part of her family, takes shit from no one, and it is beautiful.

6.  Even after all these seasons, Supernatural still knows how to make my heart stop.

And hurt like a bastard.

7.  Cas has now canonically told Dean he loves him.

Moreover, it was immediately followed up by “I love all of you,” implying that the first one was addressed specifically to Dean.

Also, the simple act of a male-presenting character saying “I love you” on this show is a tremendous step towards emotional health for everyone involved.

8.  Dean unarguably loves Cas back.

Dean refusing to leave Cas behind (even at the possible cost of his own life) is all I’ve ever wanted from this show yet it makes me want to rip my lungs out every time I get it.

Also, look at his face.  This is the face of a creature with zero sense of self worth realizing he means something to his family and friends.  Just, fuck me up, SPN.

9.  I was sure this ep would end in tragedy, but instead it ended with Dean tenderly escorting his recovering boyfriend home.

God bless you, Andrew Dabb.

10.  Castiel, Angel of the Lord, is one of the most dynamic, three-dimensional, and genuinely altruistic characters I have ever seen, and every time I think about him and how far he’s come I get an ache in my chest because it’s so damn beautiful.

Nothing to add here, just my incoherent wailing.

Rating:  11/10.  This episode is everything I hoped it would be, and more.  Excluding an explicit confirmation of gayness (which would always be ideal), it was a perfect tribute to the enduring love between Cas, Dean, and his human family.  Well done, SPN!

i have few things to say about this film, you guessed it, in a heartbeat

first things first, sweet sweet representation

its an lgbt film from beginning to end so we never had to worry about queerbaiting, which in the media sadly is often the case, til the very point of some of us wanting to make sure its not before watching a movie, a series, etc.

the love, or simple attraction, between two people of the same gender is shown without the need of said relationship being sexualized in any way.

one of the other things i wanted to talk about is the age they chose for the characters. lgbt relationships are often portrayed between teenagers and up, not to mention for some reason labeled as content not appropriated for children. so the fact that they decided to show the questioning young audience, or anyone who felt identified with either sherwin or jonathan really, that its actually okay to have these kind of feelings for someone of the same gender warms my heart.

who knew kids could fell in love too, right?

with the happy part done, let’s go into the depths of the plot itself

“A closeted boy runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams.”

afraid of your feelings being exposed? sadly, i think most of us can say we’ve been in that situation but i think that’s exactly what makes sherwin even more real, the fact of knowing what he could be thinking or feeling without the need of him actually saying a word in the entire length of the film.

now, we don’t know much about jonathan and i don’t want to speculate about him so i’ll try my best to talk about the content we were given. keyword, try.

he makes his entrance as the love interest, apple in one hand and a book on the other, cue to sherwin‘s heart beating out of his chest, literally. what i found funny, yet interesting was that as the scene develops around him, again, literally, he looks surprised but never really makes a move to step back, as if waiting for the other boy to say something. even leaning towards the trash can sherwin hid into before being interrupted by the bell.

then, we have the most heartbreaking scene. yes, i just realized what i wrote and no, no pun intended. once sherwin’s feelings are out, jonathan goes from confused to embarrased to worried, but never angry or disgusted.

also, the way homophobia was represented, so lightly hinted, as in just gossip and glances but none of the other students actually getting physical with any of them which is something that happens in real life, yet so accurate enough to make the viewer feel the discrimination followed by pity, again, without the need of anyone actually saying anything was just brilliant.

last but not least, we have the reencounter scene, where you, me, and everyone gasped once sherwin lifted up his head to let us see the other boy looking at him in the background. at first sherwin is hesitant to give jonathan the broken half of his heart that was left with him after running away, which the other boy understands immediatelly, so proceeds to gently take his hands in his, giving him the broken half that was left with him and making sherwin’s heart whole again.

the very last scene before credits start to show is such a pure and beautiful one, since we can see jonathan taking a seat next to sherwin, cue to blushing, and then his heart popping up, which is what happened with the other boy at the start of the film.

this is not even half of the things i have to say but before this gets way too long,

a huge thank you to beth david and esteban bravo for sharing this masterpiece with us

I did it (Jughead x Reader)

Prompt: Hey! So I’m gonna make this request broad because I want you to kind of write it however you wish & be able to really add your own style/twist to it. You can do it in the form of a preference/blurb or a one shot/parts, doesn’t bother me. But, could you do how you think Jughead would react to finding out you’re the one who killed Jason? It can be for whatever reason: self-defense, revenge, somehow accidental, & so on. My only request is that Jug & the reader are together when he finds out.

A/N: This turned quite dark? You told me to add my own style to it so I wrote it the way I write a lot of my short stories! Hopefully you like it.  Xxx

Warnings: Flashbacks of Jason’s death, mentions of rape, murder (obviously. Jason was shot after all.) Major Character Death. NOT A HAPPY ENDING.

how to develop your style

I got a mail with this question and instead of working on some reviews for the client, I wrote quite a long answer for it. I thought that it might be helpful for someone so here it is:

Bear in mind that probably every artist will have a different answer to this and there’s no such thing as one correct recipe for finding a style. This is just my opinion based on my experience.

1st and the most important thing is to know your basics. Developing a style should come second after developing your skills. Eg. if you want to draw characters you should start with learning all about properly drawing human figure, anatomy, movement, expression, and so one. And you should learn it as much as you can from life and from photos, not from other artist’s works. If your base is strong, if you feel comfortable with your skill, then start to deriverate it into creating your own style. If you start playing with the figure without basics, you’ll end up with a developed style full of mistakes and at this point it will be hard to correct them. So if you want to draw something with your own style, first study it. Study as hard as you can. Remember that you’ll probably never be perfectly happy with your skill, I don’t think any artist is, and you’ll be learning to draw for your whole life. But you want to be at the point where you feel you know the subject, when you’re comfortable with it and ready to push it forward. When I decided years ago that I want to draw portraits, I started drawing them all the time. And it wasn’t just drawing, I was measuring, studying, checking all distances between elements until the point where I knew them by heart. And years after that, I made a decision that I don’t just want to draw perfect portraits, I wanted to make illustrations with characters and make them unique, make them my own. So having this base, I could start changing things, playing with features and actually making my own characters from elements I already knew how to draw. Now I have a different goal when it comes to what I want to draw, and even though I’ve been drawing for many years, I have to go back to step one. I have to study the thing I want to be good at, to later put it into my works and make a style out of it once again. And this cycle never ends but it definitely gets easier. It’s easier to simplify something complicated than build something elaborate from something simple. The same comes to drawing. It’s easier to simplify your style based on perfect skill than build a perfect skill from a simple style. That’s why so many artists who have a very simple style that might look like kindergarden drawing also have lots of amazing realistic drawings and studies in their archives if you start digging deeper. Of course, not all of them.Alternatively, your style will just gradually develop itself while you’re working on your skill.

2nd thing is to study what you like. If you have your base and you struggle with finding your own style but you can point out artists that you love, study them. But here is important thing: Don’t just copy their works. Study. Try to understand, do it consciously, write down things that you particularly love in their style, find out what is it that makes you love their style. This way you’ll have an understanding of what you like and you can make a decision what do you want to incorporate into your style. You can just pick some things and try them. If you like how someone uses colour in their works, break down their palette. Check it with colour theory, find out what is it that makes this particular palette speak to you, shift it, change it, pick colours that you love and then try it yourself. If you like someone’s linework, study it, draw like them, see how it works with your own hand, see if you’re comfortable with it, feel it and then try it in your own original work. And slowly, you’ll pick up things that feel good and they will become elements of your style.Honestly, it’s really hard to come up with something original that was never done before, so there’s nothing wrong about building your own thing based on other existing things, that’s how everyone does it, consciously or not.

And 3rd, don’t beat yourself up if you feel like you don’t have a style. You’ll always be the last person to notice that you actually have a style. I don’t know how it works, really, but just keep that in mind. I still feel that I don’t have a style, even though lots of people say that they can clearly see it. But there’s nothing wrong about it because it keeps you going forward, searching and pushing your limits. The moment you settle on something because you feel like this is it, you stop growing. And that’s the worst thing you can do. Stay curious, keep going forward, one foot in front of the other. Even if you’re going slow, if it’s forward, everything is fine.
