Ouran High School Host Club is a shoujo rom-com written and drawn by Bisco Hatori. The anime adaptation was directed by Takuya Igarashi, written by Youji Enokido, and produced by Bones for the spring and summer seasons of 2006.
The series follows first year honor student Haruhi Fujioka who is accepted to the super-elite(ist) private Ouran High on scholarship. Haruhi is forced to join the Host Club in order to settle a debt incurred while simply looking for a place to study.
High school shows like this often underperform, but going in I had hopes that this would be a cut above; not only are nearly all of the characters filthy rich, but the tone of the show is bombastic and has an “anything goes” vibe. Unfortunately, other than a great visual gag of a jumbo jet flying out of one of the character’s mansion, and another where they mention the family’s personal Cessna, there is no focus on airplanes whatsoever.
Besides, if these families are really so rich I would expect them to have a Learjet, or at least a King Air. I mean, sure, I guess they could have been referencing a CitationJet, but personally when I think Cessna I think Skyhawk. Maybe that just exposes me to be the commoner I am.
In the end, two references over the course of twenty-six episodes just doesn’t do it, and Ouran High School Host Club ends the day with a Void medal.
