#Trending Thursday: Winter Hair

Static 1, You 0.
It’s that time of year again so don’t let frizzy, static ridden hair get  you down. Try some of these haircare tips and tricks to winter-proof your locks:

Protect Your Hair - Choose hair products that shield your hair from damage due to blow dryers and other heated styling tools. We love the Alterna Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Oil Mist.

Dryer Sheets - Not an old wives’ tale! These simple sheets work MAGIC on staticy hair. Keep a few in your purse and when you see those pesky pieces start to drift, run a sheet along the length of your hair for instant help.

Deep Condition - Winter weather can zap the life and moisture out of your hair. Try doing a weekly deep-conditioning treatment, like a DIY hair mask from our previous blog »»

Braid It - For the days you have minimal patience, pull your mane into a manageable style to minimize your static problem.

How do you tame winter hair static?

Plump Your Pout for Your Valentine’s Day Date

Sure, many of us would love full, luscious lips like Angeline Jolie but alas, our genetics may not allow it.  Luckily we can turn to a handful of simple tips and tricks to help pump up the pucker volume – and just in time for Valentine’s Day!

If you’re just learning:

Try exfoliating your lips with a baby toothbrush to promote circulation, causing a temporary plump.  Keep away from dark colored lipsticks or glosses; this makes your lips look smaller. Instead, opt for a lighter shade with a gleaming finish to give off the illusion of fullness.

If you have some experience:

Apply a nude or white-eye pencil to your cupid’s bow (the “M” shape right above your upper lip) and lightly blend. Use a bit of soft brown eyeliner directly beneath your lower lip line – a simple trick to create a shadow.

If you’re a pro:

Apply concealer completely over the lips for a smooth clean affect. After that, use a lip liner in a shade similar to your lips (or 1-2 shades darker), draw a line around the perimeter of your mouth just SLIGHTLY outside your natural line, moving inward. Smudge rough edges and apply lipstick, gloss, or both!

New Year, New You: Workout Motivation

New Year’s resolutions check in! How many of you have ‘getting in shape’ on their list of goals for the New Year? While we all know the reasons to work out, there are always those days that a million other things sound more appealing than hitting the gym (another Netflix marathon? Don’t mind if I do!).

If you’re one of the many who keep saying “maybe tomorrow,” check out some of these fitness motivation tips to get you in the swing, and why not pack a new gym bag while you’re at it:

Have a schedule – plan which days you want to work out or sign up for a fitness class at specific times. When money is on the line people are more likely to follow through
Buddy up – Studies have shown that we’re more likely to follow through our plans to workout when someone is counting on us, we’re not going to leave our bestie stranded for a 6am jog
Go public – sharing your fitness successes works to a) keep you accountable and b) create an automatic support group. Create a fitness minded instagram or Tumblr, start tweeting about recipes or exercises – the results may surprise you
Spice it up – The more fun exercising is, the more likely you’ll be to do it. Take it outdoors, play a sport, try a new fitness class, anything to keep you excited

Our gym bag must haves:

  1. Hair Ties - nothing worse than getting to the gym and realizing you don’t have a hair tie. These ones don’t break or pull your hair and leave it crease free! (»»)
  2. Cleansing Face Wipes - remove oil, sweat, dirt, and makeup before or after your workout without irritating your skin (»»)
  3. Reusable Water Bottle - just refill at the water fountain before you start your workout (»»)
  4. Dry Shampoo - no time to shower? Remove the grease/oil from your roots with a dry shampoo (»»)
  5. Deodorant - clinical strength ones are best for really getting the job done! (»»)
  6. Tinted Moisturizer - for after your workout, a tinted moisturizer is a must! It works as a moisturizer and foundation. (»»)

#TrendingThursday: Pastels

With the first day of spring nearly a week away - it’s hard not think of pastels. Not only in beauty products, but in fashion. These sweet, ultra feminine colors swept through New York Fashion Week like a soft Summer’s breeze and appeared in many collections.

Everything from mustard yellow blazers to high-waisted lilac pants graced the runway. A big trend was pastels matched with other pastels; a light blue top paired with mint green shorts. The designers found a way to transform those rags in your grandma’s closet into runway gold. Even the Easter bunny would be envious!

See below for some of our fav looks for some inspiration, now let’s get this trend started!

#TrendingThursday: Winter Skin

Biting winds, steamy showers, fluctuating temps - yup, it’s that time of year where we all have to deal with dry, itchy skin. Luckily we have some tips for keeping your skin healthy and glowing, regardless of the harsh conditions you may face:

Shorten showers and decrease the heat - While a long hot shower may seem appealing, we urge for the opposite! You’ll pull all of the moisture out of your skin, drying it out quicker. Opt for a shorter, warmer shower instead.

Increase your water intake - Hydrating from the inside makes for plumper and firmer skin that can repair itself better.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! - After bathing, pat yourself with a towel so a light layer of water remains, then apply lotion immediately. Switch your lotion to a cream, and look for moisturizers with Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid.

Humidifiers are your friend - By turning one on in your room while you sleep, your skin will be more moisturized and you’ll be able to breathe easier as well. Try out one of these neat portable USB humidifiers found here.

Food for thought - First off, eat right; antioxidant rich foods like pomegranate give your skin increased protection, immunity and resistance to the elements. Also, applying coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil topically are great for nourishment.

Styling Your Hair for Day Two

Experts always advise avoiding daily shampooing as it can seriously dry out your hair, especially if it’s color treated. After all, who really has time to wash and style their hair every morning?

Second day hair doesn’t have to be oily and flat - greasy hair can actually work to your advantage when you look to style your locks. SheKnows.com offers these styles to make your hair look great between shampoos:

Feeding Your Skin

Majority of us don’t leave the house without applying a bit of makeup and as important as you may feel that makeup is, skin care is more important. After all, your skin is what’s underneath the makeup you’re applying.
Right now, especially as we get into the cold months, we see a lot of dryness and flakiness (whether from indoor heat or outdoor air) in our skin. So be sure to take care of it! Exfoliate and switch to a heavier moisturizer; additionally, choose foods that will feed and nourish your skin in this critical time.
Our very own Kim McIntosh gave some great advice on The Brett & Sierra Show recently, highlighting how drinking plenty of water and eating foods rich in Vitamin A, C, and E are beneficial for skin in the cold, dry months. Below are Kim’s suggestions of foods to stock up on this season:
  • Vitamin A: Eggs, Milk, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots
  • Vitamin C: Green Veggies, Fruit, Kiwi, Peppers
  • Vitamin E: Seeds, Almonds, Dried Apricots
