Today, anti-abortion extremists briefly blocked any traffic from going to plannedparenthood.org— a site that 200,000 people count on every day for health info and services.
If it wasn’t clear that these attacks are an attempt to cut people off from care, an attack on the PP website makes it CRYSTAL clear. If you have a few bucks, please help PP fight back: ppact.io/helpfightback”
Health Canada has approved the use of the abortion pill RU-486, The Huffington Post Canada has learned.
RU-486, also known as mifepristone, will be allowed for use in Canada but can be obtained only through a physician, a senior government source said. The brand name under which it will be sold in Canada is Mifegymiso.
The National Abortion Federation’s Vicki Saporta said the abortion pill is a safer and more effective way to terminate a pregnancy than the current medical abortion regimen.
“Canadian women would now have access to the gold standard of [medical] abortion care,” she said. “Mifepristone will allow women to access abortions much earlier on in their pregnancies and will help improve access for women in more rural areas where there may not be a full time abortion provider in their community,” she added.
Mifepristone is approved in more than 50 countries. It has been approved for use in the United States for about 15 years. It was first licensed in France in 1988.
Mifegymiso will be a combination drug of mifepristone and misoprostol used sequentially to terminate pregnancies of up to seven weeks (a gestational age of 49 days as measured from the first day of the last period).
“Emma Watson, U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, launched HeForShe in September 2014, and since then, the campaign has gained a huge amount of traction in the feminist world. The campaign has taken action not only in America and England, but in other countries around the world as well.
The HeForShe campaign has been implemented in Afghanistan, but because of the Taliban and the country’s history surrounding women’s rights, it may take a while for the campaign to truly make an impact. While the Taliban focused on cracking down on women’s rights during its five-year rule that ended in 2001, the aftermath of the rule still influences the daily lives of women in the country.
In mid-June, to kick off the U.N. campaign’s launch in Afghanistan, a group met at a high school in Kabul to demonstrate the role that men play in the world of women’s rights. Local activists, government officials, and foreign dignitaries all played a role in the campaign launch, striving to make a change in the country. Activists shared stories on stage and used the slogan "A brave man stands for women" to catch the attention of everyone at the launch.
250 people attended the event in Kabul, Afghanistan, but the campaign has an even larger goal of acquiring signatures from 3,000 Afghan men and boys pledging to stand up for women’s rights on the “He for She” website. As an even broader goal, the campaign wants to acquire 1 billion total signatures from men and boys worldwide by this upcoming September.
Ultimately, the end goal of implementing the HeForShe campaign in a country like Afghanistan is to raise awareness and convey the message that gender equality cannot be truly achieved until men change the way they view women on a global scale.”
Currently, there is an outright war that has been waged on women and reproductive health in this nation. It has been waged by people who reject science and don’t understand the necessity of accessible and affordable healthcare, not just for women, but for entire communities. It has been waged by religious zealots who would rather murder clinic workers than let a woman have the right to her own…
There is something seriously disturbing about the fact that Cicil’s killing has caused more international outrage- the media is saturated with this issue, with hundreds of influential media personalities posting their outrage, with #cicilthelion trending on twitter, Jimmy Kimmel has broken down in tears on his show, etc- than the actual killing of Black lives. Yes, it is possible to care about the two different issues, but the relative attention given to Cicil over the killing of black lives is revolting. If you are more outraged by the killing of Cicil than black lives then you are part of the problem. If you feel outraged by the killing of Cicil but remain silent on the murder of black people, your activism is seriously lacking. When there is more white tears for the killing of an animal over that of actual, systematic killing of black people then we know how normalised the entrenched racism and apathy towards black lives is.
The Jack the Ripper Museum, scheduled to open in London’s East End next Tuesday is the brainchild of a former head of diversity at Google, former chairman of the Museum in the Docklands, as well as jury member for the Diversity Awards. Incredibly, no one in the area knew that the museum was opening until a couple of days ago, because people were expecting the site to be turned into museum dedicated to the social history of women and the women’s movement in the East End. Yes, that’s right: *Women’s history*.
The original plans (submitted August 2014) for the museum can be read in full online at the planning department of the Tower Hamlets: What the council approved is, however, a million miles away from what the local community is going to get. The museum will now no longer focus on women’s history; it will focus on male violence against women. It will no longer be a world-class museum, celebrating diversity and a centre of excellence in learning, as claimed in the proposal, “a modern values museum at the heart of the community”, it will be a £12 per head (£6 for children under twelve!!) attraction.
“Mr Palmer-Edgecumbe said: “We did plan to do a museum about social history of women but as the project developed we decided a more interesting angle was from the perspective of the victims of Jack the Ripper.
“It is absolutely not celebrating the crime of Jack the Ripper but looking at why and how the women got in that situation in the first place.”
This claim is quite cynical and the museum website has no mention of any other team members. Without even going into the victim-blaming tone of how these women “got into that situation” (let’s be clear, that ‘situation’ is their violent murder and mutilation), the museum website clearly has no emphasis on the lives and circumstances of the women, and the logo and merchandise available seems very much to glorify the Ripper. The photo below from i100 shows the room-by-room description that has disappeared from the museum website sometime today. In this description, it’s clear that the emphasis is on the murdered and quite literal display of these women, with promises of crime scene reconstructions and post mortem (as an autopsy is known in Britain) photos.
There is no real evidence that the plans were deliberately misleading, but the plans for the women’s museum submitted to the council dated June 2014, submitted August 2014 and approved in October 2014 had changed completely by December that year, evidenced by the purchase of £18,000 worth of Ripper-related objects to a “private buyer” with the stated intention of showing them in a private museum. The BBC article is linked to from the museum’s website and the objects in the auction were mentioned in the room-by-room description (now taken down). Furthermore, a limited company - of which Mr Palmer-Edgecumbe is the director - registered at Companies House has existed since 2013, albeit under a different name and only officially as Jack the Ripper Museum (London) more recently.
Whilst the project is at best thoroughly misguided and at worst an example of greedy, crass exploitation, the real shame of this news story is the fact that the UK doesn’t have a museum that highlights the social and political history of women and their immense achievements. It is clear that despite the pretence, this is not a serious museum with a focus on women’s role in social and political change and in many ways goes to show the enduring need for one.
This story is still developing. Updates will come if anything of note comes to light.
Alabama forcing woman to give birth, denying her the Constitutional right to reproductive choice
Alabama officials are currently seeking to prevent a pregnant prison inmate from obtaining a legal abortion by stripping her of her parental rights, in a case where a lawyer has been appointed to represent the interests of her fetus.
An unnamed woman, who is referred to in court documents only as Jane Doe, is asking for permission to travel to Huntsville to end her pregnancy. She says she was unable to get an abortion before she was taken into custody and is now feeling desperate. “I am very distraught, and do not want to be forced to carry this pregnancy to term,” she wrote.
Jane Doe — who has to get permission from the court to be transported to the nearest clinic because prison officials consider abortion to be a non-emergency procedure — is being represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, which argues that it would be “cruel and unusual punishment” for the state of Alabama to deny her constitutional right to abortion.
Now, as Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly prepares to argue against this request, he is asking the court to strip Doe of her parental rights so that she will no longer have the right to end her pregnancy. In a hearing to determine the outcome of the case, which is expected to be decided by Friday, the state court appointed an attorney — known as a “guardian ad litem” — to serve on behalf of Doe’s fetus.
“It appears to me that what the state is attempting to do is turn Jane Doe into a vessel, and control every aspect of her life, forcing her to give birth to a baby, which she has decided she does not want to do,” Randall Marshall, one of Doe’s attorneys, told the Huffington Post. “The case has certainly moved to this new dimension, but welcome to Alabama.”
Indeed, appointing legal representation to fetuses is not a new area for Alabama. The state haspreviously provoked national outrage for imposing particularly stringent restrictions on minors who want to end a pregnancy without notifying their legal guardians, which is a situation that typically arises when a pregnant teen doesn’t feel safe confiding in a family member who previously abused her. In these cases, Alabama law requires the teenager to take the stand to argue for her abortion rights — against a lawyer assigned to represent the interests of her fetus.
When married men are portrayed in movies and tv shows as finding it such a struggle to listen to their partner talk and such a PAIN to hang out with them and having this used as comedy I don’t get it? Why are you with someone if you find it a chore to BE with them. Can we stop this pls
A RedState.com blog post claimed that deceptively-edited videos from an anti-choice group smearing Planned Parenthood demonstrate that the organization is “our Auschwitz.”
The Center for Medical Progress (CMP) released a third video on July 28 claiming to show Planned Parenthood officials engaging in a “black market in baby parts.” Like the two deceptively-edited videos previously released by CMP, the latest video once again features strategically-edited conversations that merely show that Planned Parenthood is being reimbursed for costs associated with the procurement of fetal tissue, which federal law allows.
A July 29 RedState.com blog post used the highly-edited videos to call Planned Parenthood “our Auschwitz.” Writing that Planned Parenthood is “outpacing” the Nazis, the post claimed that for the organization “extinction is not enough. They want to make money off the slaughter”:
The third undercover video exposing Planned Parenthood from the Center for Medical Progress is out. By now, the takeaway from this media is clear: this is our Auschwitz.
Some might recoil at this statement. Wait a minute, they’re thinking, cool your jets. Auschwitz was a concentration camp. That’s not Planned Parenthood. In the simplest terms, no, Planned Parenthood is not a concentration camp. It is not performing ethnic cleansing (anymore). It performs certain medical services that are of value to women. But for decades, the real “value added” function of the organization has been this: it has provided a safe and legal way for the killing and disposal of babies.
Sometimes, people make this connection where it’s not warranted. This, however, is a cultural moment that put things in black and white. Planned Parenthood is facilitating preposterous acts of evil. In its abortion-and-fetal-tissue-business, it is doing the following: 1) killing innocent lives, 2) desecrating their bodies, and 3) profiting from these bodies.
Our muddy moral moment might obscure this searing truth: we are not simply keeping up to speed with the Nazis. We are outpacing them. Planned Parenthood is operating by a for-profit motive that was largely alien to the Third Reich. The point of the Final Solution was not profit. It was extinction of the Jews and other disposable persons. But for Planned Parenthood, extinction is not enough. They want to make money off of slaughter.
As a society, we have tolerated a culture of death. But now the lights are on, and the opportunity for reckoning is at hand. Let us not quiet our consciences. Let us not fail to seize this moment to save many more tiny boys and girls. Let us not miss the opportunity to do good. In this horrible instance, doing good means making clear what Planned Parenthood is: our Auschwitz.
Victoria Woodhull was an early women’s rights activist and the first female candidate for United States President. She advocated for a woman’s right to divorce if the marriage was unbearable, and was an outspoken leader in the woman’s suffrage movement alongside Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She became the first female stockbroker in American history, and founded a feminist newspaper with her sister. Woodhull’s Presidential campaign was highly publicized, as she was a woman and running under the newly formed Equal Rights Party. She was arrested and tried for attempting to run for the Presidency.
The amazing thing to me about the Planned Parenthood videos is even the edited videos aren’t offensive to me. Like at all. Like I just watched Sean Hannity say it was grotesque to see one of the women in the videos talk about clarifying that they can’t use different procedures to ensure more intact specimen because the paperwork signed by the patients says that procedures won’t change just because a woman decides to donate fetal tissue. SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY THAT IS BAD? She’s protecting the patients’ rights and upholding the contracts that they signed. Literally the only thing that I even semi- registered as bad was her saying she personally thought making a change in procedure wasn’t that big of a deal but would have to ask their legal/medical expert before moving forward. But again it’s HER opinion, she never once says that she’s talking about selling anything or trying to change things on any level.
This whole thing is so maddening, infuriating, and depressing and virtually no democratic leaders have the guts to stand up this. I’ve seen a small statement from Nancy Pelosi, which is nice but she’s supposed to be a champion on this issue and needs to step the fuck up. I can’t find anything from Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Hillary gave some wishy washy answer that is going to do nothing. Bernie Sanders seems the only taking a hardline defense. But where the FUCK are the rest of the liberals? Why has Harry Reid been so silent? Where’s the fucking president and vice president? Why aren’t they calling out the people who are still in congress trying to defund Planned Parenthood who fucking voted to SUPPORT fetal tissue donation from abortions. Why aren’t the liberals calling out the blatant lies conservatives have been spewing in an attempt to smear Planned Parenthood? When are the Dems going to stand up to this shit? They always try to come at this as if you can combat insane lies with rationality, you can’t. You need to forcefully debunk all of it and unapologetically call the group who did this shit out on their lies.
