View from a Night Plane

Reptile-tailed patches of light; amber
beaded appliques cutting through dense
cloud configurations – a lion, a tiger,
a bear (a sty in the eye); a manger,
a cradle –

no stars, no stars tonight, not up here
showing me north from south, east from
west, left from right

until stork legs bump
the tarmac with a thud
and I pick a star from
a concrete jungle

and use it, like a taxi,
to carry me home.
