British homophobic attitudes were to persist in it’s colonies during and after the struggle for independence. From the the 1920s to the 1940s there was a a campaign (led, unfortunately , by Mahatma Gandhi) to erase all positive references to transgenderism and same-sex desire in Indian, especially Hindu, culture. During these years, Gandhi sent out squads of devotees to destroy the erotic representations, especially homoerotic and lesbian ones, carved into Hindu temples dating from the 11th century
