80’S TUESDAY: Fight Like a Brave by Red Hot Chili Peppers - It has been so long, you forget how good RHCP were in the Hillel Slovak days. That is not to say that it was a good versus bad period (though I have heard plenty of arguments as to the “better” RHCP periods). In fact, my favorite albums are Mother’s Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magic. All I am saying is that while those first three albums never got much attention, it is really interesting to hear the band with Slovak in the mix before his untimely death in June of 1988. You can hear and feel the connection they all have with each other without the benefit of the slicker, higher-end production of later albums.
The irony of the song Fight Like a Brave, a lead single from The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, was that it was about fighting drug addiction. Anthony Kiedis wrote it while coming back to the band after a stint in rehab to kick a heroin addiction. Back in the studio, he fell off the wagon again, with him and Slovak leaving for periods of time to get their fix. For Slovak, the journey ended after the tour for the album. For Kiedis, he finally did clean up, and the band went onto mega-fame soon after.
