The Great Wall and Matt Damon: Do We Really Need Another White Savior?

Since the trailer for The Great Wall dropped, there have been polarizing reactions to this latest Matt Damon project. The film, which has been reported as the most expensive Chinese production ever, stars Matt Damon as part of an “elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure”. The film also stars Andy Lau, Lu Han, Wang Junkai, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and is directed by Chinese megastar Zhang Yimou.

There have been swift criticism regarding Matt Damon’s role in the film, particularly in reference to the white savior trope. One thing is certain, the trailer makes it clear that Damon is the main star, despite the predominantly Asian cast. Social media maestros such as @NoTotally, @theLLAG, @ReignOfApril, @jontsuei and @angryasianman have all remarked on this film.

Actress Constance Wu also made a strong statement regarding the hero-bias perpetuated in Hollywood in response to The Great Wall trailer release.

Wu wrote, “We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that only a white man can save the world — Our heroes don’t look like Matt Damon. They look like Malala. Ghandi. Mandela ”.   We shall let Wu explain further with her powerful post below.

I heard that Great Whites are potentially evolving to hunt in packs. Is this true?

i have heard that as well. i don’t know too much on that particular subject but i did recently read an article about great whites at Seal Island off the coast of south africa…basically some scientists have been studying a group of great whites that come and go to the island in packs of anywhere from 2-6 sharks, and they’re exhibiting signs of wolf-pack-like mentality. this could be the early stages of the evolution of hunting in packs

if u want u can read the same article here, and the piece i referred to is on page 4. (it’s on the longer side but it’s pretty interesting)

Do you think there is any validity, even in the most remote sense, to the whole Afrocentric "We Were Kings" conspiracy theory? That blacks were, at least at some point in history, considered the true master race, and that all the white races' great achievements were simply stolen?

No. Records from both European and Arab explorers highlight the fact very clearly. Sub-Saharan Africa had its kingdoms and Empires, but they were never any were never as sophisticated as those of Europe, North Africa or Asia. SA is pretty much testament to the fact that Sub-Saharan Africans are (so-far) incapable of maintaining (let alone developing) an extremely advanced society.

This isn’t anything to be ashamed of. I wish blacks would just stop comparing themselves to groups they have no relation with, insisting that they were the real Egyptians, or that archaic cave dwellers screwed them over and stole all their ancient knowledge. They have a rich history and should celebrate it for what it is.

One of the most most primitive Sub-Saharan groups, besides the bushmen (the real SA natives), would be the hunter-gatherer pygmy tribes. I’ve been listening to a lot of their music lately. Primitive is not necessarily bad. If all civilisations collapsed tomorrow those guys would have zero problems.

Been playing MHGen lately, and all I gotta say is:

Somehow, most of the monsters in this game are fluffy. I wish there was a “hug” option in this game. Like, instead of stabbing the monster when mounting it, I would like to hug the monster like it’s a Moofah.

And on a total side note, the monster I would like to hug the most is the White Fatalis. My last encounter with one left me carting like no one has ever carted before, but he somehow still looks kinda cute and fluffy to me.

Well… cute and fluffy in a majestic way. He’s so majestic, I have no idea how to draw him properly…
