Supergirl Season 3 Won't Tap Into Zod Or Lex Luthor

In its two seasons, The CW’s Supergirl has featured a menagerie of villains from across the DC Comics universe. But according to showrunner Andrew Kreisberg, two noteworthy antagonists won’t be making an official debut on the series anytime soon.

During an interview published in TV Guide’s San Diego Comic-Con special, Kreisberg revealed that famed Superman villain General Zod (Mark Gibbon) will not be appearing in a larger capacity on Supergirl, despite making a cameo appearance in the season two finale.

“It was more of a fun cameo,” Kreisberg explained, “we have no plans to bring him on. We see our version of Superman [played by Tyler Hoechlin] as one who has already gone through everything that exists in the mythology. He’s already fought Zod, Brainiac, Doomsday. Also, what is the new thing we could bring to it? Between [big-screen Zods] Terence Stamp and Michael Shannon, I’m not sure what meat is left on that bone.”

According to the showrunner, the same can be said for Superman’s biggest foe, Lex Luthor. While the character has appeared as a child in season two flashbacks, Kreisberg reassures that there are no plans for him to enter the present day - instead choosing to focus on Lex’s sister, Lena (Katie McGrath).

“I’m not sitting around wishing we could have another Luthor on the show.” Kreisberg revealed. “We have the best one. We have great things in store for her.”
