Freckled Duck (Strictonetta naevosa)
…is a unique species of duck endemic to southern Australia. Once thought to be part of the subfamily Anatinae (dabbling ducks) recent data places it in its own subfamily as it is more closely related to Anseriformes that lived before true ducks had evolved. Although they are not dabbling ducks freckled ducks do feed by dabbling for small invertebrates, algae, seeds and other vegetation. Although they are listed as least concern by the IUCN the freckled duck’s population is at risk due to hunting and habitat destruction.
