That’s What Friends Do

Lance Week Day Two: Friends

Day two of Lance week is completed!! I really need to stop making these things so long. And in case you’re wondering, yes the title is the song title from the Spongebob episode where he and Patrick met Wormy. If you were not wondering, well now you know.

Lance was friends with a lot of people in his school. This was due to his ability to see the good in everyone. That included the “problem students”. The only reason people really had a problem with them was that they never got to know them. Instead, they chose to believe the rumors others would spread. But Lance knew the truth, they had his back since elementary school. The only times they would fight was when they were defending Lance. Hunk, Nyma, and Allura were like his protectors. Ever since that one time he was pushed off the monkey bars in second grade, they made it their mission to defend him at all costs.

Now in high school, his family had to relocate thanks to his dad getting a promotion at work. It wasn’t too far away, but it was far enough that he had to change school districts. And with the money, his dad was now making they could afford to send him and his sibling to better schools. They decided on the Garrison for Lance because of his interest in astrology, but they also had one of the best marine biology programs too in case that’s what he wanted.

At first, it was hard adjusting to a new school without his friends at his side, at least one of them always shared a class with him, but it wasn’t like he couldn’t see them anymore. They would video chat almost every day after classes, get one of their parents to drive them over to Lance’s house for the weekend, or just talk on a very confusing 4-way call. Lance always made jokes about how it felt as though they were his parents and he had left for college, but it filled him with warmth knowing that they cared so much for him.

Sometimes when I don’t have time to do a full Celtic Spread, I’ll do a Cross of Truth instead. I find it gives me a good overview of a situation, because it includes the reality of the situation (basis or present) and how I feel about it (desires), as well as both positive (helpful matters) and negative (challenges) energies present. And of course, a likely outcome if I’m to continue on the track I’m on!

A bad accident involving a bus full of kids (6 years) happens in a large city. I guess ER turns into a madhouse when suddenly ca 40 kids come in, a lot of them severely injured. 3 adults were on the bus, two severely injured, one DOA. How are procedures for identifying kids and getting them reunited with their families when the waiting area fills with panicked parents? Some of the kids are unconscious/not able to tell staff their name. MC is the dad of one kid, how might things happen for him?

Hey there! Welcome back.

You’re making some assumptions about the way kids are distributed after a crash like this which aren’t exactly true. Let’s walk this back to the scene and talk about triage

First, the kids who are DOA don’t go to a hospital. If the crash is this bad, and some kids aren’t breathing, EMS will try to position their head. If they don’t start breathing, they’ll give them a few quick breaths with a bag-valve-mask (BVM). If they still don’t start breathing, that child is “black tagged” and EMS moves on to people they can save. They simply won’t have the resources to invest in unsalveageable children when there are others – the severely-injured-but-still-living – who can  be helped.

Covering the bodies with a sheet is polite, here, but are often hard to come by. These kids may simply be laid out and exposed.

Next are the “red tag” children. These are kids who can’t follow commands or who have severe blood loss, as demonstrated by their vital signs, or have some severe life-threatening injury (e.g. evisceration). These kids will be airlifted or driven to the closest pediatric trauma center.

All of this depends on exactly where this happens. In or near a big city, these kids will go to a pediatric trauma center, where specialists can care for them. If there are two around, no one center will get overwhelmed.

All infants go to trauma centers, injured or no, full stop.

Next are the “yellow tag” kids. These are ones who are hurt and cannot walk, but are not life-threateningly injured. These will be distributed around to other receiving hospitals. This is the first group of kids who aren’t in immediate, life-threatening danger, so they’re more stable, and will go further to keep the pressure off of the trauma centers.

Finally are the “green tag” kids, those who either are uninjured or have only minor injuries. These kids can, and absolutely will, wait. They can be packed off to the hospital multiples at a time – you can fit up to 4 in an ambulance – but only after everyone else (save the dead) are evacuated first.

What this means is that hospitals will get steadier streams of kids. First the red tags, then the yellows, and finally the greens. The reds need immediate attention and surgery, the yellows need beds, the greens can sit and wait in the waiting room with staff to keep an eye on them.

This same procedure, by the way, goes for any mass casualty incident, whether that’s an active shooter event, a landslide, or a bus crash: the dead stay still, the nearly-dead get balls-to-the-walls care, and everyone else can wait at least a little.

However, you ask, what does this mean for my dad character?

Dad’s gonna have a hard time with this.

Kids will be asked by responders on scene who they are, and the unconscious or unable to speak will be identified by peers or adults; EMS will track the names and units and destinations and relay.

Incident command will be established at the scene of the accident, but no system is perfect, and which kid goes to which hospital with which crew can be hard to track, especially with the critically ill – you don’t always know their names. Typically, the bus company will coordinate with the incident commander and the hospitals to find out what kid went where, and someone – the school, the responding agency (police or fire, whoever has command in this region), or the bus company will have a hotline for parents to call. That doesn’t mean anyone actually knows anything. These incidents are chaotic, misinformation always spreads faster than the truth, etc.

So your dad’s kid might have been airlifted a hundred miles away and no one knows that in particular. They might know a kid was airlifted but not whose

At the hospital itself, they’ll make every effort to identify the kid, from EMS, from the kid, etc. Backpacks, if they came, can also be used for ID; the name on a notebook might be all they have at first. (What if the notebook is borrowed? Interesting question. Misidentified kid.)

Hopefully, by the time the kid’s dad shows up at the ER, the ER will have an idea of who’s who and what’s what; kids might have phones and “Mom” might be called (almost always “mom,” because reasons that are too much to go into right now on this already hella long post.) Dad will be asked who his kid is, and that name will be compared to a list; docs might ask him for a description if they have an unidentified, or some identifying feature (clothing, hair, eye color, etc. all matter).

Worse comes to worst, Dad might have to travel to different hospitals. Hospitals get very tight-lipped over the phone after major incidents because of privacy concerns and the sneaky, bastardly ways media tries to get information.

So the general procedure will be: 1) Call the hotline, 2) Call the hospital, 3) Go to the hospital, 4) Provide info and description of kid, 5) Find kid OR go back to Step 1 and start over.

Hope this helped!!

xoxo, Aunt Scripty

u know that gif of that woman flipping the table and someone made it a joke about aries, when I saw that I was like “irl she’s probably cancer mars” and she IS , well I just saw a compilation of Megan McKenna being angry and I knew she had cancer mars (which is also true) so basically what you need to know is 1. I’m super smart and 2. We need to spread the truth about the reality of cancer mars

I went through some of your communism tag, and it is extremely relatable. It is a subject that makes me emotional almost every time that i read about it or think about it for a while and seeing ppl think it's cute or a funny meme or smth makes me wanna vomit and cry. I'm Latvian, so I take these kinds of things almost personally and I can't help it. Thank you for spreading awerness and spilling truth about this, I really appreciate it.

Given the fact that tumblr is extremely communist-friendly site, I sometimes feel like I’m talking to a wall.

But other times, when non-Baltics on tumblr say “You’re making us uncomfortable.” or “You should keep quiet about it.”  when I post about communist crimes committed against citizens of Baltic States, I feel like I’m doing the right thing.

They have no right to say so - this is our history, our countries’ past and no one can erase the truth.

The people who tell us such things have never been in our shoes - the kids in Baltic States learn about genocide of their ethnicity when they are barely in double digits at latest, often earlier.

People who tell us “It wasn’t that bad!” have never looked into eyes of a person who went to hell (Siberian labour camp) and back.

People who tell us “It wasn’t real communism!!” have never heard the fear in their parents voice as they tell about the suitcase under the bed, just in case, should they be deported to Siberia.

You have every right to take this personally - this is your country’s history, your legacy.

As far as I see it - we the younger generation have to uphold the truth, demand justice for our ancestors, because if we won’t, who will?

At this very moment, genocide is occurring in Aleppo, Syria. We are being tortured, raped, slaughtered, and basically exterminated indiscriminately. There is no aid, medicine, food, or tools of survival. There are no hospitals, schools, homes, or any safe haven. There is no body or causality count anymore, there are too many to be accounted for. The White Helmets have officially announced that they are essentially powerless and paralyzed; they have stopped counting the dead, only stopping to wrap bodies in orange bags. Men and male children are forcefully being conscripted into the regime army or massacred in mass executions. There are official reports of women asking their husbands to kill them before being conscripted or executed in fear of mass rape and other atrocities they may face. Aleppo and Hama have suffered chemical attacks that have left seemingly unharmed children lining mosque floors dead. The about 100,000 people left in the city that haven’t died or been displaced are moving from one neighborhood to the other as regime and Russian forces close in. They are running only to fruitlessly go through the action, only to feel like they are trying: it’s of no use. The city is blockaded and there are ongoing airstrikes. There is no way out. There is no escape. This is essentially a cat and mouse game. There is no hope. We are literally asking God for divine help and miracles.

There are claims that “Aleppo is falling”; however, it has FALLEN. Russian and regime offenses have taken 96% of the city. Officials say that Russia and the Syrian regime have agreed to a peace deal and/or ceasefire, but live reports from Aleppo confirm it has yet to be implemented. The siege is ongoing. There is no going back from this. What has occurred these past two days is a genocide that was live-streamed to a world still in denial about our suffering. All we asked for was an end to emergency/martial law, yet we received six years of pure agony

Humanity has failed us. The international community has failed us. We are the worst human rights violation since World War 2. We are Obama’s and the UN’s Rwanda. Please save us. Call your representative. Donate to the White Helmets, Syria Relief, Save the Children, etc. Spread the word. Tell the truth. Do anything you possibly can.

UPDATE: As of Wednesday, December 14th 2016, the Turkish-Russian peace deal and ceasefire has FAILED. Syrians have been waiting since 5 AM for evacuation busses and NONE HAVE ARRIVED. Regime and Russian forces have started shelling the city AGAIN.

Please, don’t forget us! This is not getting better, this getting WORSE. They have won. The city has COLLAPSED yet they will not cease their offense. This is still ongoing. This is a nightmare that will never end. We Syrians are trapped in this city with war crimes still happening! Please continue spreading the word.

UPDATE #2: As of Thursday morning, December 15, 2016, the ceasefire has (for the most part) been held. Preparations for evacuation are just about complete. There will be a safe passage from Eastern to Western Aleppo that the International Committee of the Red Cross will oversee. Evacuations should begin soon. We are hoping that Western Aleppo will react kindly to the under 100,000 civilians coming in from Eastern Aleppo and that it will be, for the most part, successful.

Just remember: surviving Eastern Aleppo citizens are being transported on busses that are overtly and excessively decorated with the face of their butcher. At least it’s a slight reprieve from the past couple of days. Please keep the residents of Aleppo in your thoughts and continue to spread the word.

UPDATE #3: First convoy of 1200 Aleppo evacuees have arrived at Idlib, of which 200 were immediately hospitalized and most in critical condition. A second convoy of about 1198 people has crossed the West Aleppo countryside and has just about arrived, as well. There may be a third evacuation convoy if all remains fairly unhindered.

Please keep in mind that remaining waiting Aleppo residents and even the evacuees are facing harsh winter conditions as homes have been destroyed and it gets brutally cold, especially during the night, in Syria. They are also facing extreme hunger. The Syrian regime is providing them with nothing more than transportation to Idlib. Continue to donate what you can and call your representatives.

This will be the last live update I can provide from Aleppo unless an emergency or crisis (more than the now usual) occurs or important updates must be made. Please keep spreading the word, supporting civilians in anyway you can, and remaining vigilant and informed on the crisis in Syria. International mainstream media failed us and many of you didn’t even know what was happening until you read this post. The Aleppo genocide was one of many crises over the past six years and will be one of many more. Keep Syria in your thoughts and prayers. Spread the word.
