Southern Railway steam locomotive 4501 at La Salle Street Station in Chicago for a special excursion. Rock Island 630, an EMD model E6, is to the left. Both of these locomotives have survived and are being restored.
Southern Railway 2-8-2 #4501 and SD40 #3170 leads NS train 062 across the Holston River in Bluff City, Tennessee. The train is deadheading from Chattanooga to Bristol for a weekend of 21st Century Steam excursions hosted by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.
Having been out of service for 8 years, Southern Railway SD40 #3170 moves its first tonnage since being rebuilt and restored into its Southern “Tuxedo” scheme. As viewed from Inman Yard’s North Tower in Atlanta, Ga., it is seen here moving a cut of cars from the class yard to the forwarding yard to become train 219.
