Soap-and-Skin

Top 5 skincare products✨

Not sure why I decided to drop this, but my skin care routine has been ON POINT this year and wanted to share it with the rest of Tumblr. Use it, don’t, make some edits and let me know how they turn out for you. My melanin has been sparkling all year though so I really wanted to share the love. Enjoy✨

African black soap: I tend to gravitate towards the Shea Moisture brand although it’s very drying in areas with harder water, so using a great moisturizer is key. Those of you with soft water, you’re blessed. I tend to use this on my face despite the risk. On sensitive skin areas, (face and cooch) do NOT let this sit long. Trust me, please don’t.

Apple Cider Vinegar: This is a life saver! Since my skin doesn’t break out often, I tend to only use this once a week or when I do get a minor breakout. Mix this half and half with water, applying to the face with a cotton ball and let dry. Super easy.

Lemon, honey, oatmeal/sugar exfoliator: I love making products myself when I can. Plus, these ingredients are sooooo good for you! The lemon brightens your skin, and in this mix gets rid of unwanted facial hair with continued use over time. The honey makes such a great moisturizer and my skin feels so soft and smooth after I use it. The oatmeal after you grind it up as fine as possible, (I like to use a mortar and pestle, but a blender works fine too) calms down redness and irritation, even caused by acne. I tend to substitute sugar when I’m going for a lip scrub. With oatmeal, I’ll apply twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Let this set for twenty minutes, then in outward circular motions, rub off, rinsing off with COLD water. With the lip scrub, I’ll use at least once a week or before using matte lip stick.

Eucerin Healing Soothing Repair Cream: This works MIRACLES for me. Where I currently go to school, the water is super harsh so keeping my skin moisturized is a necessity, especially since my combination skin develops eczema when dry. A dot or two of this is enough to keep my entire face moisturizer and dewy in appearance. If I do happen to use too much, it’s easy to blot with a paper towel. In the summer, the product is great because I’ll forgo foundation or bb cream and just use this.

WATER: A no brainer but this is so important for good skin. I love to use the H2OPAL App to keep track of my intake. It also calculates how much you need based on temperature, age, weight and height which cuts out a lot of guesswork for you. It also will calculate how much you should drink by certain parts of the day. HYDRATE.😊

Skincare and Beauty Recommendations

For all you babes, I made a list of my must have stuff to look the best you can go scam an SD

Body- Lush Ro Argan. This stuff is the bomb. It’s a body conditioner that smells like roses and honey. Smear that good stuff all over you and let it sit for five minutes. Wash it off and your body will be soft and smooth, no other products needed. I’ve used this stuff for five years and every person that gets a whiff of it compliments me. Guys go crazy for this scent, especially in the bed room downtown haha.JUST GET IT! You get a shower and body cream in one!

Face Cream- Laneige Water Bank Cream. This shit makes my face look like it’s been kissed by an angel. So dewy and soft! I feel like I look much younger when I apply this because it hydrates so well. Perfect to use if you want something that traps the moisture in your face and is lightweight. I’ve noticed the dehydration wrinkles I had around my eyes and mouth have diminished. My makeup goes on like a dream after I apply this.

Face- Kojic acid soap. I use this soap for my uneven skin tone and acne spots. I barely wear foundation because it cleared up my clogged pores and hyperpigmenation. Dirt cheap off Amazon. Haven’t had a major breakout since I used this the past 3 years.

Perfume- Tom Ford private Collection comes in 12 scents. With mainstream brands, I feel like ALL WOMEN’s FRAGRANCES smell the same and give me a headache. Too sweet, floral, romantic, too much alcohol, etc. Now, this collection ain’t cheap, so, get a sample from your local department store. They give it to you in a cute vial and box and the sales associates are super knowledgeable about scents. THIS STUFF LASTS A LONG TIME! I wear the Tobacco Vanille all year round. Literally, this scent is my confident booster, I smell unique and luxurious! And the scent projects like a beast, so a 4 ML sample will last you cause all thats needed is a small dab for the day!  I used to buy decants off eBay to save £££ until I got me a SD to buy me the 100 ML hehe.

Sunscreen- Elta SPF 40. This stuff is the best sunscreen on the market and all the dermatologists I’ve seen recommended it. No white cast and absorbs into skin fast, it’s also super moisturizing!

Hair- Bumble Bee Invisible Oil. If you have frizzy, dry, damaged, natural, thick hair, this SHIT IS THE BOMB. This is the only product that works on my hair when I wear it curly and straighten it. It does the job, smells great, and my hair looks so glossy and healthy….best of all it doesn’t weight my hair down or feel greasy.

Mascara- Lacome Hypnose is the only thing I use on my lashes in the past six years. I will NEVER STRAY from Lacome’s mascara products. It makes my eyes look amazing and it’s easy to take off at night. Don’t like the other brands like Benefit or Too Faced which are hard to remove at night.

Makeup Remover- Clinique Take Off the Day Balm. Your makeup literally will melt off when you wash your face with this! I used so many different brands from wipes to oil to alcohol and none of them worked as well as this.

Lipstick- Nars Velvet Lip Pencil in Bahama is the best nude/rosy color out there for all girls IMO. I use the Train Bleu colour (quite vampy) when going out at night and always got compliments! Because it’s a jumbo pencil lippy, you can line your lips easily and fill it in! Lasts all night! Taylor Swift uses their Dragon Girl  shade as her signature red colour according to the makeup artist that showed me.! Best secret lippies around!

Foundation- Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk is a game changer. My skin looks radiant, dewy, and natural which no other foundation has given me. Everyone raves about it and I wish I listened earlier and quit wasting my money at MAC and Estee Lauder.

Concealer- Nars Creamy Radiant Concealer- If you don’t like wearing foundation, this concealer is all you need then. It hides my dark eye circles and any redness on my face like a PRO. Comes with a wand so you don’t need to use anything else when applying it!

anyway victuuri because it’s 4 am

  • Makkachin steals the blankets.
  • Victor loves being little spoon and when he wakes up with Yuuri’s arms around him he just nuzzles them or traces over the skin until their alarm goes off.
  • Yuuri wakes up FAST but he still hates it. Victor is more of a morning person but he still needs a coffee before he can actually think beyond “Hold fiance. Take shower. Call fiance cute.”
  • Yuuri drinks his coffee black because college hurts us all. Victor is shocked and disgusted and dumps 60 cookie and cream creamers into his coffee before he deems it semi-responsible to drink.
  •  When they grab the wrong coffee cup on accident it’s turmoil.
  • Y: “You need to shave.” V: “I don’t wanna shave.” Y: “And I don’t want beard burn. Go shave.” then 5 mins later he’s kissing Victor’s cheek.
  • Wearing each other’s clothes is just routine to them. They’re about the same size. (Most of Yuuri’s clothes tend to be looser anyway due to his weight changes through the year) so their closet is just a mix of clothes about a month after Yuuri moves in. Especially their work out stuff.
  • Wearing each other’s jackets though will always be their favorite and when Yuuri has bad days he’ll just wear Victor’s hoodies and sleep on the couch with Makkachin.
  • Victor does the same thing only in Yuuri’s sweats.
  • They both love touching each other. Like, Yuuri will be talking and Victor would touch his lower back. They’ll hook pinkies or hands without thinking while walking. Their hands will overlap on the boards as they talk to other skaters. Leaning on each for balance while stretching, messing with their skates, or exhausted by practice.
  • They just love touching each other.
  • Yuuri loves the all natural stuff the Inn uses and used to get some in his care packages from home in college, and when he moves to Saint Petersburg Victor stocks their bathroom up with it. Most of it are oils to put in the bath or home made soaps. Victor’s skin is just #Thankful.
  • Yuuri rambling pet names while kissing Victor because it destroys Victor. He can dish it out but he can’t handle it.
  • The same when Yuuri cuddles him and wraps his arms around him.
  • Seriously. They love each other.

  • Every so often, use some moon water to wash your face.
  • Avoid using essential oils directly on your face, they can clog your pores.
  • Apply body wash or soap to your skin in clockwise circles to open your body up to positivity.
  • Enchant your moisturizers, acne creams, and cleansers for an added boost.
  • Draw sigils in your face cream.
  • Try adding herbs and herb-based products into your routine. Witch Hazel is very popular for treating skin related issues.
  • If you use pore-cleaning masks, use them to pull the negative energies from your skin.
  • Use your ring finger to massage products into your skin to ground yourself.
  • Brew Black tea and then refrigerate it until it’s cool. Then apply it as you would astringent.
  • Use coconut oil to easily remove makeup. Cleanse and wash after.
  • Rub a sliced orange on elbows and heels to soften rough and cracked skin. Rinse when finished.
  • Massaging your face is a wonderful way to ground yourself or begin meditation.
how to get into skincare

I’ve already done a post about how to get into makeup, and one about how to get into SFX, so I figured I might as well make one for skincare. I have extremely sensitive, extremely acne-prone skin, so when it comes to skincare products, I’ve literally tried everything. It’s gotten to the point where I’m the “resident expert” that all of my family and friends come to when they need help figuring out which products to use.

I think a lot of people don’t take proper care of their skin because they have the misconception that it’s time-consuming and/or expensive. Honestly, I spend less than two minutes on skincare on most days, and I only use affordable products that are available at drug stores. No matter who you are, you can afford to take good care of your skin.

product names you’re likely to see, and what they mean:

  • cleanser is just soap that’s gentle enough for the delicate skin on your face. It comes in liquid, cream, and even powder formulas, but all you need to know is that if the label says “cleanser,” then it’s just face wash. If you’re only going to use one skincare product, this is the one you should invest in.
  • Note: You should NEVER use bar soap on your face! The skin on your face is thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of your body, and most bar soaps will damage it. There are some cleansers that come in bar form, but as a general rule you should never use a product on your face that wasn’t made specifically to be used on faces.
  • moisturizer is probably the second most commonly-used product, after cleanser. This is exactly what it sounds like – it’s basically lotion that is specially made to be used on your face. No matter what your skin type is, you should be moisturizing daily. (Proper moisturization actually helps cut down on oily skin in most cases.)
  • toner (sometimes also called astringent) is a product that is usually applied after cleanser, but before moisturizer. It’s called “toner” because it tones your skin, as well as cleansing any dirt or grime that your cleanser missed. Not everyone needs to use toner, but if you have oily or acne-prone skin, I’d recommend it.
  • a face mask is any product that is made to be used occasionally to give your skin a little extra love. A lot of them are made to address certain issues, like acne, dryness, or dullness. Usually, you apply it and let it sit on your face for a few minutes before you wash it off. I personally try to use a mask on my face once or twice a week whenever I have the time, but they’re more of a treat than a necessity. (And you probably shouldn’t use them every day.)
  • exfoliators or exfoliating scrubs are products designed to buff away dead skin cells. Usually, they have some kind of gritty texture to them (like sugar grains) that scrubs off the dead skin. Like face masks, they’re more of a treat than a necessity, but unlike with face masks, too much exfoliating can actually hurt your skin. You should never exfoliate more than 2-3 times a week, and never, ever exfoliate two days in a row.
  • pore strips are kind of like waxing strips for your face, but instead of removing hair, they remove blackheads and other junk clogging your pores. I would not recommend pore strips to someone who is new to skincare, and like with exfoliators, using them too often can really damage your skin. If you’re going to use them, you should never use them more than once every three days.

There are other product names that you might see floating around online (like “essence” or “facial oil”), but these are the basic products that you need to know about. Honestly, if you have a good cleanser, toner, and moisturizer (plus maybe a face mask or two for occasional pampering), then you don’t really need any other products, because those three will get the job done.

how to build your own skincare routine:

  1. The first step is to understand your skin type. The three most common types are: dry, oily, and combination (in between dry and oily). Shop for products that are designed and labelled for your skin type. (If you have a lot of acne, look for products labelled “acne care” or something along those lines. If you have a lot of skin allergies, or if your skin doesn’t react well to harsh chemicals, look for products made for sensitive skin.)
  2. Go to the nearest Walmart, CVS, Walgreen’s, ect. with $20, and find the skincare aisle. Keeping your skin type in mind, look for a good cleanser and a good moisturizer. (If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you might want to pick up a toner as well.) If you can, look for generic brands (I know Walmart carries one called Equate) that make products with the same ingredients as name-brand products, but significantly cheaper. (If you’re looking for cruelty-free products, check out the brands Burt’s Bees and Yes To.)
  3. If you want to make things easier, you can buy all of the products you need in a pack. (Like this, or this.) These usually contain a cleanser, a toner, and a moisturizer.
  4. Every morning when you first wake up, wash your face with the cleanser and pat it dry with a clean towel. Then apply the toner, if you bought one – you do not wash this off. Then (after waiting a few seconds for the toner to take effect), apply your moisturizer. That’s literally all there is to it. If you’re a morning shower person, you can save time by washing your face in the shower, then applying toner and moisturizer after you get out.
  5. Every night before you go to bed, do the same thing. (Of course, if you wear makeup, you’ll have to remove it, either with makeup remover or with warm water, before you wash your face.)
  6. Right before bed is a good time to use face masks/exfoliators/pore strips, if you want. I always wash my face first, then skip over my toner and go straight into applying the mask/exfoliator/strip, and let it sit for as long as the directions on the packaging indicate. After I wash it off, I use my moisturizer like always.
  7. Congratulations! You now have a skincare routine!

This post goes into detail of all the products and tricks I use in my own personal routine, if you’re curious.

I hope this post was helpful! If you have any questions about specific products, or about treating specific skin conditions, feel free to message me and I’ll try to help in any way I can.

Preparation for Surgery

____

Shopping list:

(Essentials in bold if you’re money-tight, but I would seriously consider everything on this list. Obviously don’t buy what you already have)

  • Button Up Shirts or/and Zip Up Hoodies
(easier to put on & take off due to being unable to lift arms up)
  •  Comfy sweatpants
(easier to pull them down/up & take them off and they’re comfy^^)
  • Slippers or flipflops
(easier to slip on and take off, which saves bending over)
  • Hats or Beanies
(to cover that gross hair in the first week without a shower)

  • No perfume, no colour, sensitive skin soap.
(To wash with for the next few months after surgery. ‘Simple’ is a good brand. Otherwise avoid using shower gel for 6 weeks)

  • Arnica Tablets
(taken to help with the bruising a week before & after surgery)
  • Bio Oil & scar treatments
(Can be applied once scars are dry and healing)

  • Vitamin C
    (Boosts immune-system and thus recovery)
  • Ginger tea (NOT GINGER TABLETS)
(Help to stop any feeling of sickness)
  • Baby wipes / Wet Ones
(To help keep your body clean until you can shower)
  • Laxatives
(If you have trouble taking a shit - especially if you take Codeine)
  • First Aid Kit
(just encase! You will be given some spare gauze and stuff though)
  • Paper Tape
(For the dressings post op. Though you’ll get a roll after your post op appointment to put over your incisions)

  • Dry Shampoo
(Helpin’ that hair look slightly less gross!)
  • Neck rest / travel pillow
(Comfort when traveling back from hospital and travel in general)
  • Straws
(makes drinking much easier & requires less arm movement)
  • Extra Pillows
(Place these under your knees and under your head/back to elevate you while you sleep on your back! It helps)
  • The Food Doctor
(Healthy ready meal alternatives, can be found on Amazon)
  • Green Tea and detox teas
  • Plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Plenty of water
  • Healthy home made frozen meals ready to microwave
(Makes cooking quick and easy but still healthy)
  • Healthy snacks to munch on
(like nut mixes, dried fruit, yogurt bars etc… rather than junk food. Your body is healing, help it along.)

____

House Preparation:

  • Move everything in the house to being in reach
  • Make sure you have a primary carer for the first week, especially the first three days because it will be hell on your own.
  • Find a couple of films and series you wanna watch in the first week
  • Pick out a couple of books to read
  • Tidy and clean your house/room a day or two before surgery
(Makes everything simple and easy to move around in, also a more positive and clean environment to be in while recovering)
  • Change sheets and wash any clothes you wanna wear etc before
  • Prep your bed so you can sleep sitting up slightly, lots of pillows help!

____

Physical and Emotional preparation:

  • Eat healthily in the months leading up to surgery
    - Plenty of fresh fruit and veg
    - BALANCED diet at least two good meals a day
    - Plenty of water
    - Cut out processed foods, high sugars and salts
    - I recommend looking into ordering recipe boxes if you’re tight on cash/struggle to make healthy meals yourself every day.
    - Smoothies are a great time for 5 a day
    - Snack on dried fruits, nuts, yogurt biscuits instead of junk.

  • Stop smoking asap. Seriously, stop. Doesn’t matter how long until your surgery, the sooner you quit the better all round - surgery is a great motivation to quit smoking. Vape pens are a good alternative, be strict with yourself. Try to stop vaping in the month before your op or go down to 0mg of nicotine if you still need the feel of vaping/smoking. Do not vape or smoke for 2 weeks before your op. You’ll lose ur nips.

  • Stop drinking alcohol at least one month before, in my opinion giving yourself as much time away from it is much better to help detox your body and get healthy (alcohol is generally shit for you so cutting down or stopping is pretty good anyway, and surgery is a perfect excuse!)

  • Exercise. Pushups and flies will help to develop your pectoral muscle, bring down the breast size and help the surgeon place your incisions. Crunches, sittups, squats, and various exercises will help to keep the rest of your body fit and speed up your recovery (you’re gonna be recovering and potatoing for a while, get your body in a better state so it heals well and quickly). Cardio, jogging on the spot, starjumps and knees-up, gets your blood flowing, helps to get you nice and healthy for the op and recovery. Look up exercise routines on youtube!

  • Do a lot of internal reflecting and focus on your mind as well as your body. You need to psychologically prepare for surgery and that doesn’t happen over night. It’s also very difficult to do this, I really struggled to. It’s perfectly normal to feel scared, nervous, or feel like it’s a big deal, it’s a huge deal. You’re losing something that’s been there for a long time, you’re going through major surgery, and you’re finally getting something you’ve been awaiting for a long time!

  • Try not to have an ideal vision of what your chest will be like, don’t expect anything, try not to compare it to other chests, especially cis male chests. The first time you see it, it’ll look pretty rough, take it in slowly, learn to re-accept it as your own. It can take time to learn to love yourself all over again, but welcome your new chest with an open mind.

Tips and General Advice:

  • Make sure you have all your questions and concerns written down before your pre op appointment to take with you - if you have any more later or forgot to ask something, call the hospital or your surgeon’s office to ask them. Otherwise ask on the day of your op if it can wait that long.

  • Write down all the tips and advice they give you even if you don’t think you’ll forget them.

  • If you can, take a cheque in for both payments to the surgeon and the hospital on the day of your pre op appointment. This will give you plenty of time if there’s a problem with the payment and is also much easier than stressing out a few days before. Otherwise make sure you pay a week before online, so if there’s a problem you’ll have time to fix it.

  • Don’t underestimate or overestimate how big this surgery is, how much time you’ll need or how many thing’s you realistically need to buy/prepare. Obviously it would be better to overestimate as it’ll leave you more prepared, but there’s some things you just won’t need/need to do. Think carefully about yourself, your situation and how you deal with pain and how you like to be comfortable. If you forget anything you can always get it later on! So here’s some tips for that:
  1. - Write a detailed list and slowly check through it cutting down on things if you think you’ll need to. See what you can use in the house and what you’ll need to buy. Be minimalist if you’re trying to save money.
  2. - Make sure you have plenty of time booked of work/school/uni, if you go back early it’s much less of a problem than being back late.
  3. - Really take the time to research what you’re about to be put through, speak to others who’ve been in the same boat and realistically think about how you will actually be affected and how you will actually feel after surgery. This will help to stop you from having unrealistic expectations of your physical appearance and capabilities, your mentality after the op and to help stop yourself from become lazy.
  4. - Again, honestly try your best not to expect anything of your chest, try not to worry about how it will look, how the nips will be, whether the scars will be straight or narrow or whatever. Be ready to have to learn to accept your new chest however it looks. Be ready for a huge emotional change. Don’t brush off these kinds of things, they’re just as important for your healing as everything else on this list.
