21 Recommended Books for Writers

As I’ve talked about on my blog several times, an important part of growing as a writer is learning about writing. For years I’ve wanted to compile a list of writing books I’ve read, liked, and recommend. Today I’m happy to say I now have that list to add to my blog (perfect timing for anyone who likes summer reading). I’m sure over time, this list will be added to.

Many writers I’ve talked to have read quite a few of these books. How many have you read? And is there one I need to look into? (You can comment at the bottom).

If you haven’t read any of them, cool. Now you have a list to chose from should you ever want to.

Hundreds of books have been written on the art of writing. Here at last is a book by two professional editors to teach writers the techniques of the editing trade that turn promising manuscripts into published novels and short stories.

In this completely revised and updated second edition, Renni Browne and Dave King teach you, the writer, how to apply the editing techniques they have developed to your own work. Chapters on dialogue, exposition, point of view, interior monologue, and other techniques take you through the same processes an expert editor would go through to perfect your manuscript. Each point is illustrated with examples, many drawn from the hundreds of books Browne and King have edited.

What makes a good story or a screenplay great?

The vast majority of writers begin the storytelling process with only a partial understanding where to begin. Some labor their entire lives without ever learning that successful stories are as dependent upon good engineering as they are artistry. But the truth is, unless you are master of the form, function and criteria of successful storytelling, sitting down and pounding out a first draft without planning is an ineffective way to begin.

Story Engineering starts with the criteria and the architecture of storytelling, the engineering and design of a story–and uses it as the basis for narrative. The greatest potential of any story is found in the way six specific aspects of storytelling combine and empower each other on the page. When rendered artfully, they become a sum in excess of their parts.

Bestselling author David Farland has taught dozens of writers who have gone on to staggering literary success, including such #1 New York Times Bestsellers as Brandon Mull (Fablehaven), Brandon Sanderson (Wheel of Time), James Dashner (The Maze Runner) and Stephenie Meyer (Twilight).

In this book, Dave teaches how to analyze an audience and outline a novel so that it can appeal to a wide readership, giving it the potential to become a bestseller. The secrets found in his unconventional approach will help you understand why so many of his authors go on to prominence.

How do you create a main character readers won’t forget? How do you write a book in multiple-third-person point of view without confusing your readers (or yourself)? How do you plant essential information about a character’s past into a story?

Write Great Fiction: Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint by award-winning author Nancy Kress answers all of these questions and more! This accessible book is filled with interactive exercises and valuable advice that teaches you how to:

Choose and execute the best point of view for your story
   Create three-dimensional and believable characters
   Develop your characters’ emotions
Create realistic love, fight, and death scenes
Use frustration to motivate your characters and drive your story.

The road to rejection is paved with bad beginnings. Agents and editors agree: Improper story beginnings are the single biggest barrier to publication. Why? If a novel or short story has a bad beginning, then no one will keep reading. It’s just that simple.

In Hooked, author Les Edgerton draws on his experience as a successful fiction writer and teacher to help you overcome the weak openings that lead to instant rejection by showing you how to successfully use the ten core components inherent to any great beginning.

Plus, you’ll discover exclusive insider advice from agents and acquiring editors on what they look for in a strong opening. With Hooked, you’ll have all the information you need to craft a compelling beginning that lays the foundation for an irresistible story!

I’ve always differentiated whale daddies as

  • Real Estate/Property moguls
  • Hedge Fund Managers/Asset Managers/Investment managers, Managers in fucking general lol
  • Investors, shareholders
  • Chief executives, partners, chairmen and directors
  • Restaurateurs
  • Engineers/ Tech Tycoons
  • Athletes
  • Musicians
  • Fashion designers/ Artists/ Gallery Owners/ Retail shop owners
  • Entrepreneurs and established business men
  • Lawyers & Doctors
  • African & Arab tycoons
  • Aristocracy/royalty
  • Politicians
  • Actors/directors/film stars ( Show Biz)
  • Illegal ( Drug Lords, Mafias etc,Majorie Harvey notoriously dated two drug dealers before marrying Steve- I ain’t encouraging nothin )

Types of ladies

Models/ Actresses/Beauty queens/Presenters

Lingerie, print or runway models(or women who look like them) can often be the desire of wealthy men. There’s something inherently ego-boosting to some about people able to say they’ve dated a woman in a magazine or on TV! Almost as if they’ve captured a rare pokemon or something. I guess it is how some girls get delighted when they say “I’m dating a whale”.
Business women

I love the phrase “business women”  because it is such a multifaceted term. Anyone can be one whether you are a makeup artist to the stars or venture capitalists. Business women are able to attend exclusive events and conferences!

Society women/ IT girls

Women in the right circles who are able to enter into exclusive events, galas, resorts, leisure activities, country clubs and elite parties.

Bombshells/ Trophies

The Evelyn Lozada types, who have made a career out of hustling & gold digging. They could also be society women depending on their social stature. They sometimes accompany one type of guy in a single industry for instance only athletes or mostly men in oil.

Knowing that you’re working towards something is important to some daddies.

Jet Setters

Ladies who have made it their business to be at all the hot spots at all times. They are in Ibiza during the summer, London during the fall and St Barth’s for Christmas. They are always in the baddest clubs & high class venues.

Career women

Career women whether they be air hostesses, strippers or junior analysts can often encounter potential.

Places to meet

We all know about SA, Sugardaddie, Tinder & Luxe

This is probably the fastest way to meet daddies, whether it is efficient, it depends on the ladies in question. I love the online method because of the simplicity, you aren’t having to pay $30 admission fee to go to a gallery to get your hustle on!

Social media can be a  good option if you’re smart and saavy.  Instagram & snapchat has become a revolutionary way to meet people you otherwise could not!

Bars and Restaurants

Most cities have places of recreating designated for wealthy crowds. In some bars, it is impossible to not see someone famous or excruciatingly wealthy.

Escorting/ Sex work

A handful of wealthy men use our services.

We all know about "going to Dubai”. The old age way of securing a Middle Eastern daddy or wealthy clients. Lagos, LA & the French Riviera are places where women congregate to find the daddies of all daddies!

Cocktail Parties

Working where these men work or working for them can be a dangerous game. But  makes sense logically because many whales are workaholics!

I used to feel such places where the haunt of new money rich kids & it is. But everyone wants to shake it down everynow & again so clubs are a fun option especially if you’re a regular.

Galleries, Museums & auctions

Wealthy people congregate these places like a church!

Trade shows

This is the haunt of executives & business men.

Charity balls & galas

Another place where you are guaranteed to find wealthy men.

“ everything from Country Clubs to Yacht Clubs or Hobby Clubs or art clubs”

“sailing, horseback riding, snow-skiing, tennis, and golf”are often associated with wealthy people. You do not have to play, you can merely attend.

White Tie & Black Tie events

Opera/Theater/Perfoming arts

The best tickets are usually boxes, center orchestra, and grand tier—for opening nights, only—if you want to mix and mingle among the Rich. The Rich want to see the first performance. It is new and fresh. That is also when the critics will be there, as well as any social photographers for the media society photographs - Ginie Sayles

* This is all very simplistic, but it makes it so much easier to delve into the psyche of our targets. See Meet the Rich by Gine Sayles for more :)

“For example, tech savy dude: loves math and computers, he’s an engineer. I start by breaking down the personality, ex: he likes math solving a problem makes him tick.
So i play mysterious and in control. “ - Vanitythynameiswoman

Day four of seven of @marcothekaratekid and @jump-around-jumpjump’s Loud Week! Today is Sibling bonding (was) when you draw up the loud siblings doing things to entertain themselves lol.

But I took this topic to a whole new level. I decided to draw up Luan and Lincoln perform a show. I don’t know why this took so long to do but it is done….

‘Chappelle’s Show’ Co-Creator Moves Into The Limelight With '3 Mics’

After working mostly as a behind-the-scenes guy with Chappelle’s Show and Inside Amy Schumer, Neal Brennan is stepping out as a performer with his new Netflix special, ‘3 Mics.’ Brennan tells Terry Gross that he didn’t get serious about stand-up until Chappelle’s Show, which he co-created and co-wrote, ended abruptly after Dave Chappelle left the country.

Brennan also tells Terry why he and Chappelle decided they would not divulge who wrote what for Chapelle’s Show

I knew when we wrote together, that he would get all the credit in comedy, and I would get all the credit in show biz. So in comedy clubs, someone once referred to me as Dave’s typist in the past, that he would get the credit because he was a really well known comedian and I would get all the credit in show biz , because I was a white person, so therefore they’re predisposed to give me the credit over a black guy. And I was also the writer, and in LA, the writer is the organized task master, and the one who organizes the talent’s voice – Dave being the talent. People don’t want to believe that you’re both talented, they want to believe there’s this simple explanation of like Neil is Dave’s typist or Dave is this crazy genius that Neil types for or Neil is this puppet master who is telling Dave what to say, and how to say it and where to say it.  And both are insulting, so I was just like let’s keep it anonymous, so people can’t divide and conquer and it’s just a respect thing.”

“What exactly are you going for here?” Jazzy asked, skimming over the dress options you had hung in front of her.

“I don’t know? Something nice?” You popped onto the couch, resting your head on Renee’s lap, who combed her fingers through your hair lovingly.

“You said casual? We should rule out the strapless.” Phillipa said, tucking it away to leave you with three dresses. You scanned your options again, wondering why you even bothered.

Recommended Musical/Show Biz Anime

B-Project (9/10): Upon first glance this might look like your formula reverse harem anime until you realize that their female manager is basically there to introduce us to their love lives/friendships. B-Project tells the story of three popular boy bands that decide to create one super boy band by uniting the three boy bands. All of the boys care about each other on the same level as boys in sports anime ~if you know what I mean~. Overall this show is full of stories and gives you different perspectives in order to learn about each member of the different bands and how they all connect. I only wish that there were more episodes. It’s definitely an easy binge. Comedy, Slice of Life

Dance with Devils (7/10): I know that I was surprised when I first watched this show and discovered the musical elements. A girl with the secrets of all of power of the underworld is instantly being hunted by powerful devils, vampires, and fallen angels as they seek the power she possesses. All of these supernatural beings are people she knows such as her beloved brother to students at school. Supernatural, Romance, Mystery

Kiniro no Corda: Primo Passo (8/10): In a school divided into musical students (wearing white uniforms) and regular students (wearing grey) it’s clear to guess who will be in the music competition. However, this year Hino, a regular student, suddenly sees a magical fairy that no one else can see and she is granted a magical violin and entered into the competition. Some of the musical students welcome her; while others doubt her abilities. When the time comes she must prove that the true talent is her not the magical violin. Romance, Comedy, School Life

Love Stage! (10/10): Izumi Sena is persuade into cross dressing for a commercial by his famous parents and he ends up tricking his co-star who thinks he’s really a girl. When his co-star admits his feelings after 10 years Izumi and his brother finally announce that Izumi is a boy. However, his co-star, Ryouma, still can’t shake the feelings he’s kept for Izumi for the past ten years (even if he is a boy) and thus begins their romance. This show is a adorable, hilarious, and completely lovable. Yaoi, Comedy, Romance, Slice of Life

Skip Beat (9/10): Kyouko has always be hard working and diligent when it came to supporting her childhood best friend and crush. One day she overhears him badmouthing all of her hard work, saying he doesn’t mind treating her like a slave, and talking about how he enjoys abusing her kindness. Completely feed up Kyouko leaves his side and decides that she will become an even bigger star than her childhood friend. She changes her appearance and decides to become her own person, and along the way she might just find a true love for herself. Romance, Comedy, Revenge

Uta No Prince Sama (7/10): Haruka wants to be a composer so she attends a school for music students. However, she’s a super fan girl of Hayato Ichinose and when she stumbles across a man that looks just like him the man informs her that he is Hayato’s [younger] twin brother (but it’s a lie because he’s actually Hayato). She quickly befriends a group of talented singers and starts composing a piece for them. This show’s a reverse harem and has currently three seasons. Romance, Comedy, School Life

Your Lie in April (10/10): Romance lovers! Music lovers! Plot lovers! Art lovers! Tear-crying lover! This anime is for everyone! This anime tells the story of a simple lie and how it brought two people together one April. Arima has been playing the piano since he was little under the strict guidance of his mother who always wanted everything perfect. Once his mother died he left the piano for what he was sure was forever. However, that was until he met Kaori, a violinist. When Arima’s strict piano playing clashes with Kaori’s wild and free violin they will both learn something about themselves and music. Romance, Slice of Life

Request: Can you do a scenario where “y/n” and t.o.p have had so much sexual tension and have had to keep it on lockdown and hide it from the rest of the group. But finally get a moment to unleash all the sex and aggression?
A/N: Idk if this is the longest smut ever, but this is pretty damn long. I always imagined, and honestly believe, that TOP himself is aggressive or can be in the bedroom. He has attributes that he’s either said or I’ve noticed that lead me to believe that, so that’s how I’ve written him here. He’s aggressive and takes charge, and rips panties off with a look. Also, if you don’t need a metaphorical cigarette after reading this, I must have done something wrong. ENJOY!!
Warnings: This is the smuttiest thing I’ve ever written. SMUT!SMUT!SMUT! So much smut. There is also some BDSM, Dominant and Submissive play hinted in here. So please, be careful while reading.

What are some good satires?

Yay satire! I love satire so I’ll try not to overwhelm you with a giant list, Anon.

Dr. Strangelove - Kubrick’s black comedy and political/war satire with Peter Seller playing three roles and ad-libbing a bunch of lines. Hilarious commentary on the “balance of terror” thinking during the Cold War.

The Great Dictator - Chaplin’s notorious political satire about Adolf Hitler and facism that was released when the US was still at peace with Germany in 1940. Edgy.

The Gladiators (The Peace Games) - this 1969 film was the original Hunger Games. During a time when war is no longer economically viable, world leaders assemble small teams to fight each other on a small scale. And it’s all sponsored by a pasta company.

Life of Brian - Monty Python’s satire on the life of Christ. Enough said.

The Truman Show - Admittedly, I haven’t seen this one yet, but it has been highly recommended to me. Truman is the unwitting subject of a reality TV show in this satirical comedy about reality, popular media, and spectating.

American Beauty - While more of a drama than a satire, this film pokes fun at the American middle-class and their ideas about beauty, love, sex and happiness.

Get Out - Ah yes, you’ve heard of this one? Technically a horror film but also a fantastic social satire about racism in American society today.  As Peele stated, “The real thing at hand here is slavery.”

The Princess Bride - the best romance fantasy-adventure film that makes fun of every romance and fantasy-adventure film. Inconceivable!

Sunset Boulevard - the classic film noir that comments on show biz and Hollywood. It’s also full of memorable quotes.

That’s just a few of my top choices so I hope you enjoy them!

Happy #NationalTapDanceDay to these animated stars!
