ingrained

Grains
of salt
dissolve,
and grains
of sand
settle;

We watch
as we run water
wash our hands,
we leave;
Take time bound
journeys,
like specks
floating along
eons-long-stretches
of infinity;
Insignificant,
Untraceable,
Incurable,
From horizon
to horizon
of the vast sea
we race, exhausted
against a ticking clock;
In between,
we are crooked lines
that zigzag,
afraid
so afraid to be washed away
by waves that
rise
through abrupt tides
now and then;
In the end
we learn of our nature
to settle
or dissolve,
forgotten like everything else.
