Spurs hire first paid female assistant coach in the NBA

WNBA veteran and six-time all star Becky Hammon is on a more modest retirement tour as she wraps up a professional basketball career that began in 1999.

“I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.” Pop announced via press release.

Hammon played for the New York Liberty and  has suited up for the San Antonio Stars since 2007.

Lisa Boyle became the NBA’s first female assistant coach, on a voluntary basis, in John Lucas’ 2001 Cavaliers staff.
