I'll be 17 soon and have been thinking about becoming a Catholic. I'm still doing a lot of research, but I finished reading the Bible earlier this week and I've never been so moved. I don't have any Catholic friends or know anyone that is (only Christian) and this isn't the first time I've thought about changing faith (born Shea Muslim and never practiced it, in all honestly I didn't (and don't) enjoy the religion I was born with)). What process does one have to go through to convert? I'm in UK
Congratulations! I’m really happy for you!
I love the Bible, too, and I love the Catholic Faith. The Catholic Church is the one that Jesus Christ started Himself and we are truly blessed that we can become members.
The process is called RCIA, which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. At the end of the year-long process (from fall to the Easter Vigil Mass), you will receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion).
You will most likely go through RCIA, but I am 17-year-old convert from a Protestant denomination and I had to do things a little differently. They placed me in first-year Confirmation instead of RCIA (so I was with teenagers from Catholic families in a two-year program). I think they did it because I had already been baptized, they wanted me to be with other teenagers, and I’m still technically a minor. I’m mentioning my experiences in case they change things for you, too.
Go to your local Catholic church and ask about RCIA. You can read more about RCIA here. Also, you can make friends in your new church :)
Again, congratulations and I’m so happy that you are thinking about becoming a Catholic Christian! God bless you! I’ll be praying for you.
